Neptune, Hades, & Zeus are brothers, according to Greek Mythology. Triton is Neptune's Son in Greek Mythology. That would make King Triton the nephew of Zeus and Hades. Thus, making Triton and Hercules cousins, making Ariel and Hercules 2nd cousins.

Keep in mind this is all according in Greek Mythology.

So next time your at a meet and greet with one of them, ask them about it.

And what ever happened to Ariel's Mom?

If you watch the movie very carefuly you will undestand from undertones and attitudes by king triton that her mother was kiled by a human, possibly a human fisherman.

Ariel's mom decided to go visit her daughter in WDW. While there, the mom wanted to meet a few of Ariel's friends. So, she went to the meet n greets. She met a certain Tigger and hasn't been heard from since..... :lookaroun

Actually, and I know I'm being nitpicky, but that does not make them 2nd cousins, if I understand correctly what you're saying. I haven't seen the movie, but I assume that Triton is Ariel's Father?

If so, Hercules would be Ariel's first cousin once removed, not her second cousin. A first cousin once removed is when your first cousin has a child. That child's great grandfather is your grandfather. Your parent is a sibling to that child's grandparent. A second cousin is when two first cousins each have children. Those two children are then second cousins, as they have a set of great grandparents in common. Each one has a grandparent that is a sibling of the other's grandparent. Then when those two children each have children, those children will be third cousins, as they have a set of great great grandparents in common. On the other hand, if my cousin has grandkids, those grandchildren will be my first cousins twice removed. The next generation will be my first cousins three times removed, etc, etc.

Sorry, I know that's nitpicky, but when people refer to "first cousins once removed" as second cousins, that's a pet peeve of mine about as bad as people referring to WDW as DisneyLand. :D

This should help everyone else..

This thread has duel subjects and I *think* I understand the whole Ariel's mom subject... but the whole family thing I understand on like 3 different levels if that makes any sense

I dont understand most of this once removed, 3 times removed stuff. In my culture... we just have plain old cousins and uncles :lookaroun

This is a great little piece of trivia though. Excellent find :sohappy:

Usually, we'll just refer to them as "cousins" whether it is a first cousin once removed, or a second cousin, etc. But, if you want to use the techinical terms (which we generall don't use in everyday speech), the child of you first cousin is your first cousin once removed because he is one generation removed. The grandchild of your first cousin will be your first cousin twice removed because, from your first cousin, there are two generations "removed". Does that make sense? On the other hand, your grandkids and those of your first cousin will be third cousins, your children and your cousins children will be second cousins and, of course, you and your cousin are first cousins. But like you say, we generally don't introduce people as "this is my first cousin once removed, Jeff Stuart". We just say "this is my cousin Jeff".

we were raised to think of each other as the whole first, second, blah blah blah...

here is another good link:
http://www.genealogy.com/genealogy/16_cousn.html

even though it makes sense (sorta), its hard to change a whole families understanding to this 'first cousin once removed' way of thinking. too difficult and not worth the arguements. we'll just continue on thinking the way we do. lol... not gonna kill anyone if we don't get it right. long as we keep loving each other!

its a lot of fun when you someone ask 'how are you cousins?' and you can say 'i don't even know, its all jacked up!'. at a reunion one time years ago, i was able to say "oh we have the same great great great grand parents', blah blah blah. but i can't think that fast any longer and there are now too many of us. now we go by 'tribes' ... tribal names that consist of the names of the kids of the beginning of our known oldest ancestors. when we greet each other, we just call out our tribe for distinction because there is only a select few in your tribe who are your uncles and aunts... everyone else is just cousin.

i need to go find me a geneology message board lol ... i have taken this post too far.

btw - thanks to the OP for the greek mythology connection. that was fun!
