Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?

Anybody watch this last night?

If I was in that female contestant's shoes (aside from being uncomfortable in heels) I would've got the question wrong (according to the show) but in actuality, depending on the way you look at the question, got it right!

The question was...

What is the largest species of bear?

Now, my girlfriend said, "Polar Bear."

I said to her, "No, the Polar Bear is the tallest, but the Kodiak bear is the largest."

The answer on the show was Polar Bear.

Now, it all depends on the definition of largest. The Polar Bear is actually (on average) a foot taller than the largest brown bear (The Kodiak) but the average weight of a Kodiak is 2500lbs vs. the heaviest average weight of the Polar Bear at 2100lbs.

By large, I don't think of "tall" I think of "most mass" which would be the Kodiak bear.

I was explaining this to her as the show was going on...and, aside from looking at me weird because I knew this useless knowledge of bears, agreed that "large" isn't height.

My question is...

Does largest mean tallest and strongest...or does largest mean bulkiest and broadest?

The ratings were high because it follows American Idol, which is the highest rated ongoing show on TV. I found "5th Grader" kind of boring after the first couple of contestants.

Honestly, the first answer that came to mind without thinking was the polar bear. I did a few seconds later think well, no....maybe it's the kodiak? In this case, I think, largest means tallest, though I didn't see the show. I don't watch a lot of TV, too busy working, going to school and planning/dreaming about my WDW trip! Anyway, I'd say it's a tie between the two bears, I wouldn't want to run into either of them in the wild, unless I was heavily armed and at a great distance!

I find it sad that anyone would miss one question on there, with the exception of one or two obscure things that you would probably only know if you were studying it.

largest = bulkiest = biggest overall

tallest refers to height while largest refers to size. Who in the forum has the largest butt? I doubt we'd be looking for a tall butt. :hammer:

If you give me a few minutes, I'll call a 5th grader for the answer.

(The only time I watched the show, a guy didn't know what 2x5 was. I get nervous watching clowns screw up the easiest tasks. Same goes for this show.) :lookaroun

My hubby and I love that show! We have a 5th grader and even though I help her study etc. and she is a straight A student, I still am amazed at how STUPID I must be because I don't know the answers to many of the shows questions.

I agree.

One question was really bothering me on Wednesday's show.
It was worded very similarly to this:
"True or False. Fiction books do not use the Dewey Decimal System."
The answer they say is "false."
I would have thought true.
Isn't non-fiction the ones that use the DDS?

I didn't expect it to be all that good... but I was pleasantly surprised.

Well, OK... I was happy that Jeff Foxworthy' hosting, which came outta nowhere.

But I'm a little miffed at the realization: Some of these questions are HARD!

In my defense, the Canadian in me didn't know when Columbus Day was. I guessed May. :lookaroun

See, the last library I was in had the fiction books separated by genre and then alphabetical by author, so I would have gotten that one wrong, even though it would seem to be right.

I thought it was bad when the woman on the other night was asked how many sides a trapezoid had and when she used her "Peek" to see the kids answer of 4 she said "But doesn't a square have four sides? Why would they call it a trapezoid." I'd expect better from someone who, according to the information pop-up had a 3.3 GPA at Community College...

Edit: Remember one thing about this show, though, all questions come from 5th grade textbooks, so it's only as accurate as the information in those books...

Some of them were a little too tricky for me. :lookaroun
And 5th grade wasn't all that long ago. :lookaroun

I did know when Columbus Day was.
I did not know that Andrew Johnson was the first president to be impeached.
Actually, I did know it, just could not for the life of me remember it.

See, for some reason, I happened to know that, despite my lack of American education.
