Anyone cancelling trips due to economy?

Just curious......my mom called today asking me to consider cancelling our trip in 5 wks. She's panicked over the current market crisis.

The wife and I will still take the kids and go, even if she and dad decide to stay home.

Just wondering if the recent weeks have caused anyone to rethink plans.

I just cant imagine doing all the planning and getting my kids all excited and pulling the plug.
I know that I am fortunate to have a Solid job with steady income but even if my income were affected by the current economic downturn I could not cancel our trip unless it meant id lose the house or not eat as a result.
I have lost money in my 401k btw. Ive been putting money in for over 20 years and it has less now than it did 5 years ago. Kinda scary isnt it.

We just took our 2008 trip. Still going to want to go in 2009. Might have to rethink a few things, but we some how make it happen.

This is the one vacation a year that I get to escape reality. I don't take the laptop and I don't do any real work at all.

The economy is going to drive me to WDW if only for my sanity!

We are not going untill july but I do not see the economy getting any better by then. Some of the things that we have planned might be switched around but unless something happens we are going. I say go and have a good time with the parents, yes we are not doing well at all but don't let soemthing that is going to be bad for awhile ruin the vac.

Have a great one!!

No cancellations for me. Since I'm a DVC Member, our rooms are already paid for. I already bought our Annual Passes, so all we need to worry about is the food we'll eat and the cost of gas to drive down and back.

If you're in the DVC are there ongoing fees that you have to pay, sort of like a house payment?
Also how many weeks can you go to WDW and stay at no extra cost?
Can a person who is in the DVC go to WDW at any time and stay there.
How does the points thing work, in a nutshell.

Tks.

There is a maintence fee per point. Each night you want to stay "costs" a number of points. It depends on the time of year, type of room, resort, and day of week. You "buy in" at so many points, and they "recharge" each year.

The thing is, my maintence fees are a monthy expense. They are budgeted for, and they are deducted automaticly from my checking account. In fact I barely notice them. However when I want to go to WDW, I just call up and use some points. No additional budgeting for a room needed.

As with DVCMike, my kids AP's are good for the next 11 months, and mine is good until Feb - so thats another expense allready taken care of.

We are looking at a trip in April, depending on schedules (and possibly airfare prices - spring break airfare EWR-MCO can be $$$$$ at times). When airfare is cheap, and the kids are not in school - we go.

We have a cruise booked (but not paid for) in August 2009. I still plan on going on that.

Have you considered flying out of Philly? I have a number of times when the $$$'s out of EWR are crazy. I know, I know Philly isn't that close, but when you start factoring in saving $100 per person on the airfare and no baggage fees and it's less expensive to park down there, you tend to come out ahead.

We dont leave till Dec 2009 and have not booked, but the way I see it there is a good chance many wont plan on booking trip till last minute so it may make Disney have a few more deals out there to incourage travelers. As well fuel seems to be going down so perhaps airlines may lowere prices. Just my thoughts.

We are planning to go as usual and are already talking about February 2010 after that. We stay offsite and drive down and that right there saves a good deal. :)

I imagine lots of things are being canceled right now. This thing on Wall Street likely gets a bit worse before it gets better. And housing prices as well. But unless your job is in jeopardy, I would think that canceling out of fear that everything will just go to he** is unnecessary. Gas prices are coming down (not as quick as they should be, but they are coming down), and while 401(k) losses are scary as heck, for most that is a problem for the long term that can be handled gradually over time.

I'm no financial whiz, but I know a little bit, and I think that within two years, the economy will be recovered fully and we'll look back on this week's panic in the markets as the sign that the country was finally taking its economic problems seriously.

Whether we actually make the changes necessary to avoid future catastrophes like this remains to be seen.

Don't purchase your airline ticket until you are absolutly sure of your plans...Once you purchase your airline tic you are stuck...I do not fly often and got rooked with airfare:( Hate being a novice but no ones perfect

Same here. Members since last year and we too buy annual passes so we're going at Christmas and in either Spring or Summer 2009. No plans to cancel.

i too am fortunate to have a stable in demand job. i've already gone twice this year from VA. If i had to, i'd rather cut back on other expenses than cancelling a vacation. this year we went in March and Sept(for the free dining). we spent less money on gifts and stupid things, refilled our water bottles instead of buying new ones...

We went on our usual summer trip this past June and going down again for Christmas. We are lucky enough to be in jobs where the economy hasn't done much to us, however we are cutting back on the "extras" like shirts, hats, etc. The DVC has allowed us the opportunity to go back and also get the discounted annual pass so we will go back in summer 2009 as well. We have been trying to put some $$$ away each month to help pay for some of the things we can't pay for in advance like the cost of gas to drive down which varies day to day on the way down.

I work at Walmart and we have a company funded 401K besides what you can contribute out of your paycheck. I've always been of the mindset that "I need my money now", so I've never put anything aside for 401K...just what the company contributes. One of the assistant managers there is the same way and he was saying a couple weeks ago, that it's the irresponsible people, like us, who don't invest in a 401K, who are going to come out ahead from this crisis. I don't know how correct he is in that statement, but I find it kind of amusing, anyway.

As far as whether or not this economy will cause me to cancel my Disney trip...we have no trip planned for next year (and not because of this), so it's a moot point for me.
