Anyone cancelling trips due to economy?

Just curious......my mom called today asking me to consider cancelling our trip in 5 wks. She's panicked over the current market crisis.

The wife and I will still take the kids and go, even if she and dad decide to stay home.

Just wondering if the recent weeks have caused anyone to rethink plans.

I hate to say it, but if the slowdown in reservations causes WDW to offer more and better deals, we might be more likely to make a trip to WDW. It seems the slowdown is also reducing the price of oil, which could lead to some good airfares.

That's assuming that the economy doesn't tank totally.

The only thing that would douse my enthusiasm for another trip is if Disney Suits postpone a bunch of updates and new projects. So in a sense, the corporate reaction to a slowdown could cause us to think twice about another trip.

Its more a matter of choices for me. I won't say I am not comfortable, but I don't have money pouring out of my ears either. I rent a two bedroom condo, I drive a 2001 car, I have hobbies that are not overly expensive.

I don't know what boat most WDW guest are in. I am not living paycheck to paycheck, but I also don't drop $1,000 on a whim. The DVC was a thought out decision for me. It was not cheap to buy in ($16,000 or so). My DVC dues are $49.07 per month. That gets me about 7+ days in a studio at a deluxe resort - give or take. I guess for a person just getting by, $50 a month is a big deal.

So I guess you could say your are close, sort of. I do have disposable income to the point where if a trip with my kids ended up costing an extra $250 more than usual, I would not cancel. But get up in the extra $500 range and thats a different story.

Totally understood. That was my basic assumption behind my comments anyway. Not billionaires, but not destitute either. Probably like the vast majority of us here.

And it's almost as if we can tell where we all fall in the economic spectrum by the tone and content of our respective posts.

Oh, and I'm happy to report that our Jan. trip may be back on, depending on how airfare prices go, and if Disney offers any specials (fingers crossed). We have been able to save better than we thought we might so we may not have to postpone it a few months after all. :D So I guess I'll remove myself from those who had to possibly postpone or cancel an upcoming trip.

I think that the answer is...yes people are canceling their trips. That's the reason that Disney has offered so many deals for this winter. In fact Disney's stock has taken a huge hit this week due to financial analysts predicting losses for the company since a majority of it's revenue come from theme parks. Analysts are predicting that with the credit crunch people are going to be more and more strained and less likely to take vacations. This is why Disney has cancelled some of it's plans for refurbs. This economic crash (offically announced as a crash today) is about a lot more than home prices and gases prices. Its a total meltdown. It may take a little while but it is going to trickle down to all of us. I read a prediction today that said by the middle of 2009 over 16% of American are predicted to lose their jobs.

However, that said, most of us on these message boards are not going to cancell our trips no matter what. Disney is what we do. Several other people mentioned that they would be willing to cut cable or other expenses to still take a Disney trip. But we are in the minority.
