I make it a point to stop in an listen to Sonny's set at least once per trip I wish there were MORE of those types of Counter Service options.

I could not agree more! I don't think Sonny is background noise at all, sure during the busy lunch and dinner times he might not be the focus, but almost every time I have been in there everyone at the tables move the chairs to face him and the little kids dance around to his music. I think he is perfect, I know his set list backwards and forwards but still enjoy seeing him at least once a trip!

An interesting rumor that was tossed around was the idea of having the show return to the original, but have different versions that can take place. As in the show could play different songs for different groups but perhaps have a set opening and closing song. It could be different depending on your visit. Between all the different versions of the attraction all over the world over the past few decades, there are plenty of songs ready to use to program in.

It would be similar to Tower of Terror or Star Tours 2 or even the Hitchhiking Ghosts in the Haunted Mansion. Now, take it with a grain of salt, but it would make it more interesting.

This sounds like a great idea! I would love to see this!

Hardly contradictory. The nostalgia may not just be for the specific, but spirit and ideas behind the attraction, the message or the boundary pushing. Sometimes the nostalgia built because the old was simply better than the new. Look at the little projects at Disneyland like the Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough or Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln.

People that want the old Tiki room back don't want it updated. They wont the original ride back. I think that can be broadened to most traditionalists. Sure there may be exceptions, but I think they are few.

I don't know, I think you may be surprised. I'm obviously a Horizons fan (see my avatar), but I wouldn't mind seeing a new Horizons with updated effects, or even a new ride with the same theme. Same with the Tiki room. What bugs me about the current version is that it feels like they just shoehorned some recognizable characters and called it a day, plus Iago basically mocks the attraction. If an updated Tiki room means new effects, better animatronics, I'd be all for it.

I actually think the people who want absolutely nothing to be changed are the exceptions, even among traditionalists. I think it's more a case that they squawk the loudest, so they drown out the rest of us.

In general I think nostalgia is about wanted to return to a feeling not a set of specific visual elements. An example--a few years ago my wife's grandmother died, and my wife's parents decided to move into the grandmother's old house. My mother-in-law had grown up in that house, and clearly nostalgia was a big part of wanting to return. But they completely renovated the house, down to the studs in some places, added a carport, etc. Now, the contractor said it would have been cheaper to tear the house down than what they did. So that's the tug-of-war, wanting a modern version of something that still reminds one of the original.

Really, isn't that Disney World all over? A steel, concrete and vinyl take on small-town main streets, medieval castles, and jungle trees?

I think that if the spirit and look is the same, then the traditionalists will be appeased. The problem will unm is that it just trashes the original. If disney does add a sonny element, if the songs and style matches the original, that would work out best. I think bringing in a stitch show will not appease many fans and make things worse.

Because that was so well written, I'm going to go ahead and change my vote. I understand what that poster's comment means now. I humbly take back any of the snark some may have perceived was behind my post. (Which was not at all my intention)

I think Stitch gets a bad wrap simply because of Alien Encounter. They softened a hard ride. Stitch just happened to be the face of said softening.

Stitch gets a bad rap because they over saturated the character, and didn't do so with quality additions. Had Stitch's Great Escape been some mind blowing attraction, or at the very least better than what it replaced Stitch wouldn't be the joke amongst the fan community as he is now. Add on to that, the failed attraction Stitch's Supersonic Celebration and it seems that they don't know what to do with the character.

SGE is Alien Encounter but less scary and trying to be funny... It isn't funny, so it fails at the one thing it set out to accomplish. I don't mind Stitch as a character, but the attraction sucks. I honestly wouldn't mind getting the Tokyo Tiki Room with Stitch because that is an actually decent attraction, but it sounds like we're getting the original back, which is better.

look at that! now that's how discourse should be: a polite exchange of ideas between open minded people. i dig it!

just to expand on slowjack's excellent point about nostalgia: i think most people who would consider themselves WDW fundamentalists with a nostalgic spot soft would say they yearn more for the old school disney spirit rather than the physical attraction. so the spirit or soul that horizons or the original tiki room seemed to have is what they miss, not the actual nuts and bolts of these birds sing this song, then they make this joke, etc. i think it can be a pretty important distinction. most people want disney to build attractions with the mind they seemed to have in the '70s and '80s, as opposed to making carbon copies that some of the new stuff seems to lack at times.

Wait, they're actually bringing the original ride back?

I'm not sure I'm up for being terrified like that again. But that's a mega win, as far as getting old rides back into the pack if its true.

SGE was one of Disney trying to bolster an animation property with a ride. Sadly, it wasn't all too memorable with the public (though it did make its budget back and it was well reviewed.) I was perplexed when I heard that they would be revamping the ride and including Stitch, but then I remembered how unnerving it was for me the first time I went on it - and I was in high school. I wouldn't recommend ANY kids to go on that ride. Definitely not family friendly.

The Stitch version of it, however, isn't really all that interesting. They took a ride that certainly was entertaining (even if I am a wuss) and watered it down to nothingness.

He provided logic that answered my question. It made perfect sense, so there was no reason for me to hold onto a thought that was basically no longer valid. That's how its done.

I'd like to see an updated version but with more of the original songs included.
The Tiki Room has always been a "so bad it's good" attraction for me. New Managment got old fast but I liked the concept, the epic struggle between classic and updated, which is quite fitting when you think about it.
