I was waiting for someone to say "Those aren't real characters" where I'm supposed to follow with: GEEK ALERT! GEEK ALERT!  I thought it was pretty funny when I first saw it. Of course I would have told them I was joking.

D'oh! Sorry for ruining it! It's just that most of the names are different, translated to Portuguese, so I had to ask...

Sorry! :D :hammer:

Ok people, this is it! Both covers for the British version of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Later tonight, the American one.

Both are the british ones. I think he said.

I guess the second one is the hardback?

Yeah, Skirt Boy, you're right they're both British. It said the second one was for the "adult" edition, whatever that means. I suppose you're right, it must be the hardcover. And now, the American cover (which is the same we use down here):

Excellent work yet again Rod.

I might need to get round to read books 3 + 4 so I'll actually be ready for the new one coming out!

 That's enough to scare anyone! I nearly read all three LotR last year, but I stopped in Return of the King...I got to this incredibly long battle & couldn't stand it anymore. Every time I pick up the book, that same d**n battle's going on!! But HP3&4 won't do you like that...you know from the first 2 that they read fast and don't stick you in a single scene for 40 pages! :D You might be wise in waiting a little while though...every time I finish Goblet I just can't wait for the next.

I was extremely disappointed with 4... although it was GREAT all the way through, it never comes to a conclusion! :brick:

Exactly! It ends with a beginning! Makes me rabid for the next one and *boy* has that been a wait!! (Though I wouldn't call myself disappointed....I loved it the whole way through!)

J.K.Rowling's writing is so much lighter than Tolkien's. The HP books are such easy reads. I found them hard to put down.

Just for comparision, it took me about 6 months to read LOTR, however in just 6 weeks i had finished all 4 HP books.

Remember the HP books are supposedly written for children.

i like reading both LotR and HP...though, personally, i like LotR better so far. i've only read the first two HP books (i'll eventually read the other two...i quit so then i could start reading Two Towers) i didn't like the second HP as much as the first one. though, i must admit the second book was much better than the second movie. but i think i read the first two HP books in about the same amount of time it takes me to read one LotR book! course, it's hard to keep up reading when i have an English teacher piling on books like Dracula and Wuthering Heights. i've been working on Two Towers since mid-Dec. and i'm still on Chap. 5 of book 4. for some reason it's just hard for me to get into the second part of TT...the first part was much more interesting. it has gotten a bit more interesting though with the appearance of Faramir and his crew.
i guess it's just personal preference when it comes to who likes which one better...like i said, i personally prefer LotR, but i think it's because i've always like adventures and that kind of thing, and LotR is more like that...i feel like i've actually been somewhere after reading LotR.
one thing i've never really gotten though...why do people compare LotR and HP? i mean, the only thing they half way have in common is that they both have wizards...(well, and giant spiders) but the wizards in HP are completely different than the wizards in HP...in HP they seem to do more like magic trick type stuff and in LotR it's more of a Star Wars 'using the force' type thing...am i making any sense at all? can anyone tell me how people got started in comparing the two?

People compare the two because they were released a month apart, and they were both highly anticipated movies that came from wildly popular fantasy books. I agree, though...it's like comparing apples and oranges.

I like the LotR stories and characters, but I hate plodding through all the description and superfluous history to get to the actual story. I don't need three pages describing the forest. I don't need 10 pages giving the history of the Shire. I don't need 2 pages describing their favorite pipe weed. I'm sure it's a great read for history majors, but way too dry for me around these parts. But the thing I really hated about those books was the names.....

<begin rant> Everything. Every person, every mountain, every river, every forest, EVERYTHING has 5 different names! It's this in Dwarvish, but it's that in the Elven tongues, and it this other thing in the language of men. It's called this by the people of Rohan but it's something else in the language of Mordor. I got really tired of coming across yet another word that starts with E and trying to remember if it means Aragorn, a mountain, or a sword! And Aragorn himself has 20 or so names! <end rant>

That said, I enjoyed reading them. I'd still like to finish RotK, but I just can't get through that battle! Every time I pick it up, it's still going on! I think I need someone to give me a quick synopsis of it and tell me which page to start reading again.... :D :p

The problem was that Tolkien really liked his languages.

He invented elvish, so then descided to create a world around it!

I am a big LoTR fan though.

I loved reading both the Harry Potters books (all 4) and all three Lord of the Rings books. Both sets were so good that I couldn't put them down. I finished the first Harry Potter book in 1 day!

I can't wait till The Order of the Pheonix comes out. The very beginning is supposed to reveal a great deal that has been kept hidden from the reader.
