Animatronic functions turned off at Dinosaur?

The 1st time I rode it, it was amazing! Last year, I believe that many of the dinos and effects were not working. That's so sad.:(

I was a bit disappointed with Countdown to Extinction, since based on the name I had assumed the obvious music tie in (similar to RnR).

TBH, I love Dinosaur and loved CTE. I think it is one of the most under-rated things on property and I wish it was a bit better maintained. I also wish Lucky had become a regular in the area and we had a nice walk through zoo featuring some animatronics. But, I'm crazy.

Turned off animatronics at Dinosaur=The TDO we know and love as of the present at hand. Those stupid cost cutters. They obviously came up with some reason to say "will make more profit and shed less attraction operating costs by only funcitoning the animatronics for X amount of days in the year and turn of off the rest of the time cause it's not like guests we know would notice and if we do will just pretend like it never exists/existed" or whatever other endless amount of excuses they can come up with/find.

Just throwing this out there for my own selfish reasons. Does anyone have (or even have pictures of) a Countdown to Extinction Fastpass that they'd be willing to give me/sell to me?

I just rode dinosaur for the first time this past November and I was shocked because it wasn't scary to me at all & I'm typically scared of everything. The hype about the ride made it seem so much more than it was, though I still liked the ride. I guess now I know why. It's a shame. Wish they would fix it.

Just rode yesterday. As far as I'm aware the animatronics were as good as they ever are; the sound however wasn't stellar. Overall the ride felt notably less wild, for better or worse.

It could be MUCH scarier.....people on the on ride photos look less like they're scared and more like they don't really know what's going on.

I still like this attraction a lot....it just hurts to see all the now static, smaller figures.
It is still a hoot to ride.

VERY difficult to film however.....so be sure to ride for yourself and experience it.

Something i find amusing - check out the dry erase board in that first scene right before you are shot off into the past. Every time i see it in person, it has more and more *graffiti* from CMs having a bit o fun. I had a good laugh watching a video from the CTX soft opening that had a blank dry erase board!

I don't think TDO is to blame on this one.
The problem lies with the design of the Animal Kingdom itself.
These animatronics have been turned off, de-functioned, or B-moded because wear-and-tear has made full-mode operation impossible.
Countdown to Extinction has never had a refurb. Ever.
And it can't. The Animal Kingdom only has 4 solid rides and a handful of shows to occupy guests. Closing one of the few attractions they have would move it from being a half-day park to a 4-hour park, cause capacity issues, and wreck guest satisfaction.

CTX will just have to solider on, half-built and half-broken, for at least another 6 years.

It wont last 6 years.

And TDO must now take some of the blame for stalling MystI.
Agreed. While I understand the challenges posed by putting either Dinosaur or Everest down for the extensive refurbs they need (arguably Dino more than Everest, for which my only real complaint is the narcoleptic yeti), but it is certainly Disney's fault that a 15-year old park has had so little added. Compare 1986 MK to 1971 MK. Or 1997 Epcot to 1982 Epcot. Or even 2004 MGM to 1989 MGM. Much more had been added than AK has seen. And that is certainly Disney's fault. It's not for lack of ideas with potential.

At this point, the one thing they can do quickly is build a Panda exhibit. I would like to see the following steps made before the Camp Minnie Mickey redo:
  • Move Festival of the Lion King by the end of 2013
  • Fast track a Panda exhibit in a re-designed and/or re-located Maharajah Jungle Trek by mid-late 2014
  • Upon opening of the Panda exhibit, take down Dinosaur to add elements and fix broken effects. If they want to take Dinosaurs from Ellen's Energy Adventure and redo that in the process, feel free. Re-open as Countdown to Extinction or another name.
  • Once Dinosaur re-opens take down Expedition Everest for yeti and other repairs. Perhaps have an additional new effect in the yeti projection room
  • Demo Primeval Whirl and replace it with a dark ride
Another option that can be done would be a redone Discovery River Boats as well.

The problem is that TDO or imagineersntried to do too much with animatronics that could not live up to the wear and tear of daily use. It would take constant maintenance to keep them working properly ecery day. They are complex with manynsmall working parts. This is evident on all attractions with animatronics, COP, SPLASH, DINOSAUR, EE. Maybe scale back the movements and keep them working would be the answer insted of trying to be unrealstic for two year lifespans.

TDO doesn't design the rides, that's what WDI does. It's possible that TDO "cheaped out" on some of the elements but or the most part once the budget is set it's up to WDI to deliver the attraction and TDO to maintain it.

By this logic then the DL version of Splash Mountain would be falling apart as well, I haven't heard the same complaints about clones of WDW attractions having poor show quality at DL. I can't say that I pay as much attention to DL based forums but given the fan base I doubt that they would stand for (at least these days) attractions being in kind of sorry state that some WDW attractions are in.

However, there's no doubt that TWDC as a whole is more than willing to move away from the highly detailed animatronics of old. If for no other reason than the expense of maintaining these complex mechanical systems.
