Am I An Oddball For NOT Wanting To Work For Disney?

Heading for the great escape.
Which is why we made a career of the military?

In my case it was to visit exotic lands, meet new interesting people and shoot them, but I digress.

No that was youth, naivety and the effects of alcohol.

Though three years in Sardinia, in a beach side villa, with extra wedge was hardly a penance.

Two of my brats were born in Germany, I loved it. My Bosnia tours were mixed, especially as tour one was a 4 star hotel in Brindisi, well its close enough for air force types.

Though I had a good time with some Black Hawk crews I met in Banja Lukka on my 2nd tour. The joys of illicit drinking dens on the flight line.

I've thought about working for Disney many many times. I actually had a friend pack up and move to Florida and got a job doing the food carts at Epcot and then also worked at the House of Blues in DTD. He loved it. I did audition for Disney once back in 2003. I was not picked to go past the first round of cuts and (not to toot my own horn) but I was probably one of the better dancers at the audition but the girls who were chosen had been to the audition 3-4 times before or they knew the person who was in charge of the class or running the auditions so they had an "in".. Like with other places, it's always about who you know!! But regardless, the audition was a great experience. I think that's the only thing I would want to do at Disney, perform in the parades and shows. Yes, it would be work but I love dancing so it would be more than a job.:animwink:

I understand where you are coming from completely. Personally, I wouldn't want to work there now but maybe in the future when I retire which is like 60 years from now. :ROFLOL:

I have always wanted to work there but I almost feel the same way. I leave the place where I have responsibilities to take care of to a place I don't have to care for one bit. I get to leave my car, my house, my job and my unwanted but vital everyday routine. I also get to sleep in and not worry about it. I would like to drive that Bee in the Electrical Parade or at least fork for it, or Work for Spectro Magic, either one.

Someone's a Davy Crockett fan!!!
Fess Parker fan for life! :)
I loved watching the adventures of Davy Crockett on Vault Disney back in the day.

As far as working for Disney in my retirement years (if "retirement" still exists when the time comes), I might consider moving closer to the Mouse and picking up a part-time job for fun. By then, who knows. As for now we love the magic of seeing the Fla state line sign, the sight of Spaceship Earth after a year-long absence...truely makes it special & an escape from reality.

Of course, the rest of the year is a bummer with all the WDW-withdrawl...but that's why I found this board. :D

My dream as a teenage was to become a dancer for Disney, in whatever form-castle dancer, parades, Pleasure Island-and live in Florida. When dancing to a backseat to the Culinary World, I knew I wanted to do my internship in Disney with the College Program. I got in and was so excited to finally have a taste of my Dream. But four days before I was supposed to leave, it was pulled out from under me. I was beyond crushed.

Since then, I haven't really had a desire to work for Disney. The thought creeps in from time to time but then I remember what happened. I still want to move to Florida, but I'd be happy to just live in FL and have annual passes. Or keep my cast members close for fun day trips!

Ouch. Sorry to hear.
What happened, if you don't mind telling?

I've thought about this. First off I do not think I'd want to live in Florida. If I worked in the parks I'd want to be doing something simple, basic. Cleaning up the streets (being out and among the guests), helping on an attraction...you know, "How many? Row 3" or maybe assisting a character (watching the kids having fun). Other then that I think the job would be too much like 'work'.

I would fear that I would end up having a strong dislike for Disney if I worked there. Especially if I had a bad boss. Turn anything into work/job and the fun is taken out of it quickly. I prefer to go only as a guest and keep it as an escape from reality rather than being my reality.

The only possible job I would envy at WDW would be the role of a handsome male face character who gets to put the liplock on hot female face characters. But alas, at 35 years old, I must face the sad reality that I am too old for such a role. But maybe in my younger days.

Think for yourselfer
Not odd at all.

I have no desire to work for the mouse right now. I am happy in my career, and would not want to move away from my family.

However, I do plan to retire to the Orlando area and get a job piloting the ferry boats around property. This dream drives me to bust my hump 50-60 hours a week so that I can make it a reality.

What better way to spend my twilight years then puttering around the 7 seas lagoon bringing people to the most magical place on earth? Nothing.

I've occasionally considered it, but no I don't want a job there. When I retire I intend to become a Snow Bird and winter in the area and spend lots of time at WDW. I have a beard I have no intention of shaving off and a forearm tattoo that would be too much trouble to hide.

I've actually had GR CMs suggest that I should get a job there. But... No.

So is that the dress code for Disney CMs? No beards and no tatoos (visible I assume)?

By the way, I prefer the "escape" but I would love to go beyond the walls there once in a while

I'd work for Disney, but they don't have aggressive security. I could see myself working at a hotel somewhere, helping people have a great time too.

There is nothing wrong with NOT wanting to work there. The way I see it is sometimes you don't want to ruin the magic. By working there you could sully yourself with the inner workings and maybe you don't want that.

They make you shave your beard? Why is that?

I totally agree...it would lose the 'magic'! As a teen, I worked in a bakery. The smell of the donuts being cooked, getting cramps in my hands from filling cannoli's, let's just say it's 30 years later and I STILL don't eat donuts! And I used to love shopping in a "fancy lingere store" which is in every single mall across the U.S.(hint!), so I managed a store for 5 yrs. Let's just say I still cringe every time I walk past one now. The magic is totally gone!
