All things Knotts Berry Farm

I do remember the nighttime water spectacular on Reflection Lake. It was a pretty rare thing. I got to work on one show for the 4th of July twenty years ago. I even fell in the lake. The fireworks show was outsourced to Pyro Spectaculars for those special occasions. There used to be a small Mark Twain type boat that went around the Lake. During the 70s/80s Knotts had their Knott's Incredible Fireworks Machine in the lake nightly. Now the neighbors won't allow fireworks except under hard to get permits.

I'll see if I can find info on the Thunder Falls show. I remember the Owl projection. Even the Bigfoot sculpture is still under the waterfall there.

The steamboat was the Cordelia K, right? Docked in Camp Snoopy? If I remember correctly, it was right around where Sidewinder is now, next to Woodstock's Airmail. Come ~2003 or so and Reflection Lake was forever changed.

Do tell. You can spill secrets here.

Alright, here goes nothing!

So inside the main show room, there is a show panel in the ceiling just in front of the glass at the front of the stage. This is black and invisible to the audience, but inside that panel are physical set pieces. Replicas of the totem background, part of the fire pit, and the cane. Pepper's Ghost is used for the smoke projections. There is no actual smoke in the show, although the preshow spiel warns you of it (probably to maintain the magic).

When the Storyteller is about to disappear, the lights dim and the replica background is projected onto the stage with Peppers Ghost. He stands at his cue, and carefully but swiftly places the walking stick into a little peg hole in the floor. We cannot see it, but this holds the cane in place. When yyou hear the "twinkling" noise right before he disappears, the cane is projected over itself. Storyteller disappears, and all projections around the cane are off. The peg releases the cane and it falls on cue.

Attached photos are a side view from the usher podium showing where the overhead pieces are, and an overhead view looking down on the entire room and stage.

So Knotts should replace live actors with free roaming audio animatronics? That worked really well for Delos corp.
What's next, live dinosaurs in a theme park?

No, not all live actors in the park, just this one. I don't think I'm asking too much for a projection heavy show to figure out a way to continue the spirit of the show without having it be in the current format. It's possible with some imagination, maybe present the material as a series of walk through exhibits instead of a stagnant stage.

Otherwise there's no justification for keeping Mystery Lodge. You have to pay an actor for an attraction that can only be sporadically presented and is seen by maybe 15 guests a day?

And take up valuable square footage that can be repurposed for other uses, that hopefully gets much more use by guests.

Same argument can be made for Lincoln.

I was just looking at what a summer trip that included several Cedar Fair parks might look like (assuming everything is open by then) and noticed that it now appears that all Cedar Fair parks season passes include the 2021 season, so I definitely have to give props to Cedar Fair, although it is entirely possible that doing this will work out in the best financial interest in the long run.

The issue is the passive nature of the show. They built an incredible theatre with a ton of really nice illusions. Instead of having an actor in bad make-up lip-syncing to projection effects, the show needs to feature a live performer who can actually play to the audience. Each show should feel fresh. Maybe hire a permanent magician or two and have them incorporate other tricks with their storytelling. The space also needs a horror show version for Haunt like they had for one year but with additional immersive elements.

I have been to Knott's Berry Farm many times, and never skip seeing Mystery Lodge... but I never noticed before that there was a giant Indian Chief carved into the rocks there above the entrance! How did I miss that all these years???

I first saw Mystery Lodge at the 1986 World's Fair up in Vancouver, where it was the signature attraction of the GM pavilion. It was a beautiful and impressive show 35 years ago and it still is today. So glad they've kept it going! Last time I saw it a few years ago with some family, the theater was nearly full.
