All Magic Kingdom, All the Time (aka Has Disney given up on Space Mountain?)

There seems to be some confusion so i'm gonna try to break it down.

The "new tomorrowland" Disney created for Disneyland in 1998 was a poorly concieved, under funded, hode podge mixture of the following:

- Tony Baxter's desire to bring some of the stuff they cooked up for Euro Disneyland home to Anahiem. I guess his team felt that since Discoveryland (tomorrowland in paris) was based on old victorian ideas of the future. It wouldn't have to worry . The Astro Orbitor, Rocket Rods, and that really ugly cheap brown, chrome and gold paint that was sprayed EVERYWHERE in the land stems from this.

- Michael Eisner's vision of Tomorrow (aka "The Montana Future") he felt tomorrowland should represent a future where people are one with nature and live away from the big cities and use computers and new technology to do work. Looking back it was actually somewhat visionary of him. This is the reason Tommorowland has vegitables and fruits growing all over the place and the phony rockwork blocking the enterance.

- An attempt by imagineers to incorporate elements from the better plan to upgrade Disneyland's Tomorrowland (called project TL 2055). That prop on top of the rocket jets platform, the music loop, and the replica of the moonlander are based on far better concepts from TL 2055.

Naturally this "new" tomorrowland was a huge failure (the first of many for Disney). So in 2005, Matt Ouimet and the imagineers decided they were going to start over and slowly get rid of this hodgepodge land and start turning it into a real Tomorrowland again. This new Tomorrowland is supposed to be a hybrid of a modern sci fi view of the future with some elements of Walt's 60s Tomorrowland. The land is now being repainted in Blue, White, and Silver and the logos and designs are changing to become more modern. The Astro Orbitor is currently being repainted as we speak and from the pics ive seen it looks alot better. The 2005 version of Space Mountain, Buzz, Nemo Subs, and Star Tours 2 are supposedly part of a larger project to revamp the whole land and remove all elements of "victorian tomorrowland".

Now what this means for Magic Kingdom is another story. Some people here have been suggesting there are plans to change up florida's Tomorrowland (and with stuff like Stitch, Buzz, and MILF boy do they need to). So far here is what we know:

-Space Mountain is under rehab. Will the themeing be different and if so will it reflect the current land or something else?
-A new lamppost was added last year somebody posted a pic of it on this site and other members (I think it might have been Lee?) suggested that this is a sign of new themeing coming to the land.
- There are plans for the area where the Galaxy Plaza Theater used to sit and the skyway station
- COP could possibly be recieving a makeover within the next couple of years
New Blue/White/Montana future sounds nice...Wish they would lend that EPCOT for a bit, like they did with Project Gemini. But you know...Don't do all the SSE Killing and Coastering.:lookaroun
I kind of like that scheme. It reminds me of the original TL.
Same here. Retro is the future...;)

I don't even know who MILF boy is. Only that such an acronym makes him sound like a horribly inappropriate and confusing superhero.

Damn Martin! My freezer has at most some vegetables, some meat and the occasional home made ice cream.

Sounds like they need to defrost some of that stuff before those things become like my doorstop quality Christmas cake. :lookaroun

Also found some disturbing news about the upcoming Little Mermaid attraction from Jspider, a long time poster at various Disney sites:

"I'm totally not sure how much I should mention things. I got lucky and got to meet a few Imagineers last summer. Anywho it boils down to something mixed. Supposedly it's the whole projections vs animatronics thing. Radiator Springs has had to fight to retain it's animatronics count, Mermaid will still have a few but not as many. But that's all rumor so don't count me as saying anything 100% and also it's just something I heard a year ago.

I hear Disney it outsourcing animatronics now, like how they outsourced the animatronics for Hong Kong's small world ride and it's doing some funky things to development or something like that.

I'm not sure how reliable anything I hear is though so I'm kinda waiting and seeing how these projects actually turn out. I'll be skeptical of Al and other people calling Mermaid an E+ not just because of these rumors but because Nemo was supposed to be this big deal and wasn't.

Overall though I still think these expansions and changes are pretty cool. Trying not to get so fixated on the numbers element of it."

Anyone know more?

WOAH! Is that the new look for DL!?:sohappy::sohappy: If so...It's amazing, and exactly what I've envisioned for ours.

Hope that's not true for TLM...AA's are what make or break the attraction to me.

And very nice, post, Conundrum. If you were to stay on this line of thought/style of posting, I'm sure there would markedly less people calling you out, including myself.:o

That is pretty cool. I was wondering how and when they were planning to start the refurb. Is it going to be a whole expansion with new architecture and new attractions? I am pretty sure Honey i Shrunk the Audience is leaving and something is planned for Peoplemover.

Yep that is the new look currently underway at Disneyland. The Astro Orbitor will be completed in June and they finally got the planet rotation working again (they were broken for many years now).

I also updated the first post with a project tracker and the list of rumors that Martin posted.

Nobody really knows. It's common knowledge that Baxter and his WDI team have been planning to revamp Tomorrowland for years now and Space Mountain, the Subs return, Star Tours, and a new Peoplemover were going to play integral parts in that. The rumors state that Honey! I shrunk the kids will be replaced with a Wall-e attraction, a new ride will go on the people mover tracks, astro oribtor will stay out front with its new look, the rock work will be removed replaced with fountains, and the observatron thing is rumored to be replaced with a new attraction to make up for the loss of the skyway.

Keep in mind Disney also has a couple of sci-fi movies in the pipeline. Nemo/20k under the sea (which currently doesn't sound too good given the choice of director and rumored cast), John Carter of Mars, "Tomorrowland", and Tron 2.0. If those movies are good and are financial hits we could see elements from those films incorporated into TL as well. But they would have to be Pirates/Pixar level hits to be considered.
