Is this the origin of the two finger point for CMs?
Pretty much.

"In a conversation The Huffington Post had with a current Disney employee, the employee claimed that the parks require their workers to do all pointing with two fingers. (The employee wished to remain anonymous due to not being authorized to speak to the media.)
The action is seemingly innocuous at first, but it’s apparently a murky tribute to Walt Disney’s smoking habits — with the company side-stepping around the reason as to why the icon pointed that way."
That's a myth.

That's a myth.

THANK YOU. The "They photo shopped out cigarettes from Walt's fingers so now the employees point with two fingers" urban legend spouted off online is almost as dumb as "Coca Cola gives Disneyland free soda bibs for the free publicity" and "You can get a death certificate at the Haunted Mansion".

I once heard someone online say the Partners statue has Walt waving like he is because the photo it originated from had him holding a cigarette in the hand he's holding out. One of the most ridiculous things I've heard.

The only thing more ridiculous than a Huffington Post Disney article is an anonymous Disneyland employee (likely a front line, entry level CM) acting as a Disney historian.

Especially since Speilberg is such a Walt and Disneyland fan.

This is gonna be a bit off topic, but isn't it amazing how many high profile and talented filmmakers have an appreciation for Disneyland? Spielberg, Lucas, Guillermo Del Toro are a few I can think of off the top of my head. Really speaks to the quality of the park from a theatrical perspective.

It's an effective myth because Disney actually did doctor photos to remove cigarettes from Walt's hand. Since that part is true, it makes the pointing thing easier to believe.

Yes, but the amount of Disneyland urban legends that get perpetuated online by bloggers and fan sites is absurd, and makes studying actual park history more difficult.

It's true that when smoking, Walt would point with two fingers.
It's also true that Walt didn't want to offend people by making a one-finger gesture, lest it be culturally misinterpreted.
