http://showbiz411.blogs.thr.com/mic...(The+Hollywood+Reporter+|+SHOWBIZ+411)#DisneyCaptain Eo is coming back ( for sure ) at Disneyland next January
According to the Hollywood Reporter - and to my sources, too! - Captain Eo should come back at Disneyland next January. Apparently the huge success of the excellent "This is it" documentary - 220 Milion $ worldwide in two weeks had some effects on the WDC. I hope that DLP executives will also have the intelligence to put back Captain Eo at Paris Magic Kingdom as "Honey I Schrunk the Audience", just like everywhere, is not popular any more.
“Captain EO” is coming back.
The word from Hollywood is that Disneyland is planning to revive Michael Jackson’s 3D film beginning in January. Heavily influenced by “Star Wars,” the 1986 short film was produced by George Lucas and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Back in those days, Michael had the money from “Thriller” to make anything happen.
EO or not EO? That is the question.
Singer Michael Jackson had not yet been laid to rest when the first rumors that Captain EO would return to Disneyland began to pop up online. Some reported that Disney CEO Bob Iger would announce the film's comeback at last September's D23 Expo; instead, Iger told reporters there were "no definite plans" to resurrect the 3-D space opera. "We are looking at it," he admitted. "It’s the kind of thing that, if we did it, would get a fair amount of attention and we’d want to make sure we do it right.”
The rumor flared up again earlier this month when Roger Friedman at Showbiz411 (link) reported "“Captain EO” is coming back." Several other entertainment Web sites have repeated essentially the same story, but none of the report have cited any sources. Unofficially, we've heard a rumor of a "Spring Thriller" promotion that would feature both the return of Captain EO and the upgrade of the Tower of Terror attraction at Disney's California Adventure park with the random-drop program currently used in the Florida version of the attraction. The upgrade of Tower of Terror seems a little premature - the World of Color show should be enough to draw huge crowds to DCA this spring and summer, and Disney could keep the "T4" upgrade in reserve for a later date.
Disneyland's annual holiday media event is later this week, which could provide an opportunity for a formal announcement. For now, Disneyland officials are keeping mum on the subject, saying only "We have nothing to report at this time."
EO, EO, Oh...
Meanwhile, George and his executive team are still wading through a sea of corporate red tape in getting Captain EO up and running this winter. While the plan has hit plenty of last minute snags and obstacles over the last few months, the greenlight it finally received earlier this fall is still shining bright for the Michael Jackson show to return to Disneyland in 2010. They won't be making the mid January debut they had most recently been working with, but as of now, the show should arrive by early February (subject to change of course).
The latest delay has been over the Kodak sponsorship of the attraction, not surprisingly. It seems there's not a thing Kodak can do about what plays inside the theater itself, and lucky for them the Kodak folks are very supportive of changing the show back to Captain EO. Even Kodak can't pretend that the tired old Honey I Shrunk The Audience show is doing much for their image, as most days Dole gets more people filing through the 45 year old Tiki Room than Kodak has visiting the Imagination Institute. But Kodak does have a legally binding contract on what the pre-show video and their commercial looks like, and in what context it is presented. The end result now has WDI keeping the Imagination Institute theme for the overall facility during Captain EO's run, and shoehorning the EO introduction into the Kodak commercial that plays in the lobby beforehand.
What has also come online in the meantime is the plan to return Captain EO to the Epcot version of the Imagination Institute as well, which is just one part of the larger Kodak pavilion in that Florida park. And the latest wrinkle is that the Oriental Land Company also wants in on the retro-fun and is looking to replace their current MicroAdventure! attraction at Tokyo Disneyland with Captain EO in 2010.
As of this writing, it looks like the Imagination Institute theater at Disneyland could close as early as mid December in order to receive the heavy theater refurbishment and light lobby refurbishment needed before EO can return by February. While the Disney Parks structure was supposed to streamline the theme park operation, in its infancy it is throwing up more roadblocks than its helping when it comes to the Captain EO project.
Twenty-three years ago, at the height of his phenomenal entertainment career, Michael Jackson joined forces with Disney to create “Captain EO,” a groundbreaking 17-minute 3D film experience.
We are excited to confirm that the classic musical spectacular that thrilled Disneyland park guests from 1986 – 1997, will return for an exclusive, limited engagement at Disneyland park beginning in February 2010!

Wow! I hate to say it but Al hit this DLR rumor perfectly.
Two weeks ago on the blog we announced that Captain EO will be returning to the Disneyland Resort in February 2010.
Today we have an update. “Honey, I Shrunk the Audience,” the show currently in Tomorrowland, will close January 4 so work can begin in the theater to prepare for the Captain’s return.
Check back on the Disney Parks Blog for additional updates.
We’re constantly evaluating attractions at Disney Parks, but Captain EO is only scheduled to return to the Disneyland Resort.
Was that when Iger and others were rumored to have screened EO in the theater? Not sure about 2008 but in 2009 it closed Sept 8-11, just days before the D23 Expo.

wasn't HISTA rumored to close after labor day 2008?
The plan to add EO to Epcot is still being kicked around in the Team Disney Orlando building even though they are detrimentally allergic to spending money out there, and you can bet they will be watching the audience response in Disneyland very closely when EO opens in four weeks. If Epcot's Honey I Shrunk The Audience show closes suddenly in February for, oh let's say "roof repair," you'll know EO is coming to the Florida park. But now that the cat's out of the bag, they'll probably have to change the Epcot rehab excuse to "carpet replacement," or "baseboard enhancement" or some other bald faced lie.
