Advice for Braces!

Ok! So here is the quick rundown! I just got braces yesterday Friday the 27th of February! It took them about 3 hours to get them on and about an hour after getting them I got big time pain!

That night I was at a fundraiser for our school system! It was the Harlem wizards against our teachers in a basketball game!!:eek: The whole time I was in great pain! Mostly after singing the Star Spangled Banner with the Choir.

I am doing a little bit better today but they are still sore! I am taking Advil constantly! I have a basketball game tomorrow Sunday March 1st and is depending to play or not. I am thinking not because if i get hit in the mouth(I did it by accident today!:lookaroun) and started getting pain right away. Also, if my front teeth touch each other guess what.. MORE pain! So yeah!

If anyone here as had braces please give me some advice!! I am desperate!
Quick info:

  • Staying on for 1 in a half years
  • red and white for the colors of the New Jersey Devils!!!!!

The pain does go away...

I'll suggest what did wonders for my son: Take Tylenol about half an hour before each Orthodontist appointment. It helps a lot.

I know how you feel! I have had my braces off for about 2 1/2 years. The pain was terrible right after and that night. There isn't much you can do, just tough it out. It didn't last for more than a few days for me.

And I wanted to tell you it will be all worth it when you have a beautiful smile in a year and a half!

I had braces for close to 6 years before they were taken off in December '07. That Tylenol thing mentioned above was actually my "ortho strategy" every time I had an appointment. And yes, the pain does go away and you get used to it for the most part. (If you think singing choir's bad, try playing the trumpet for 6 years with the mouthpiece constantly pressed up to your mouth. ;))

Is it 5:00 yet?
I remember when I had my braces put on that I had a hard time eating for a few days because when I tried to chew it hurt like h*ll!! It is definitely worth it though!!

Keep to soft food until the pain passes. It does go away. My DS usually has pain for about a day and a half after each appointment. If you have to wear headgear, wear it faithfully-he's ahead of schedule because he did so well with his and doesn't have to wear it anymore.:D

I'm a 20 something with braces so let me just put forth a friendly caution:

Make sure you get your wisdom teeth removed early! I had to get braces again because I did not get mine out soon enough apparently.

As for the pain, yes, it goes away. It shouldn't ever feel this bad again because not only are you teeth moving, your mouth has to get used to that metal rubbing against it. You should start to 'callus' in the next day or so you won't have to deal too much with that again. Be sure to keep wax handy though since you never know when you need it :)

I hate having these things on but I know it's worth it so hang in there  And like another poster said, keep up with whatever they tell you to do. I'm ahead of schedule as well.

My braces never really hurt. Putting the retainer in and out to eat after braces was worst.
Learning to re-play the flute was also very interesting.

It only really hurts for a day or so after first getting them on and after tightening. Its only for a day or so, everything feels fine most of the time.
