A Whole New World: An October 2012 Trip Report

Alternately titled the “We’re those people now!” trip report!

Well hello there, wdwmagic, please allow me to introduce myself. I’m hollybelle. And, once upon a time, I was not the mother of a little pint sized pirate baby. And in those days (despite what I may have thought then), I had all the time in the world to write trip reports, stalk trip reports, comment on trip reports, and daydream about trip reports; in other words, overdose on all things trip reports. It was one of my daily addictions.

These days, I delight in small personal victories when it comes to “free” time. Showers and sleep (and laundry and cleaning) almost always win out when those heavenly little slices of quietness drift my way. So to all my wdwmagic friends, please accept my humblest of apologies for not commenting on each of your reports over the last year. It is seriously shocking to think I dropped off the face of the trip reports forum that long ago. While I may not be commenting, I have at least been lurking in the shadows, like the creepiest of creepers. Violet (my iPad) has been my trusty sidekick lately and while she makes it easy to peruse the interwebs during all those late night feedings with Lucas, typing up comments is another thing entirely.

Luckily for me, during a couple slow days here and there at work I was able to carve out some time to write this trip report {{that was in December – sadly it took another two months to find the time to upload photos and post}}. It was very important to me that I find the time to write it, because it feels like a big milestone in the story that is our lives. I mean, I wrote about our engagement, our wedding, and Lucas’ birth. Writing about his very first trip to the World certainly qualifies as a “must” in my book!

IMG_8508e5x7.jpg

Who: The handsome little Ohana pictured above (taken in November when Lucas was around four months old)
Where: Port Orleans French Quarter
When: October 12-16, 2012
Why: Because we couldn’t wait to introduce our little man to the happiest place on earth

::SPOILER ALERT:: It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows! Even though we thought we had adjusted our expectations accordingly prior to the trip, we quickly learned they needed further adjusting upon arrival. This trip was about small victories for us. And I hope you enjoy sharing in those, as well as getting a good laugh out of our missteps in parenthood, as you read along. Brett and I like to think we’re Disney veterans and know all there is to know about our happy place, but with a three month old baby in tow… it was a whole new world!

I had all intentions of photographing every single second of this trip. But, you know, best laid plans and all that. Instead, I’m now doing my best to string together enough shots to tell the story. I’d say it’s a regret, but in truth, we were just trying our best to survive. Hah. Let the adventure begin.

Yay, another HollyBelle TR!! Loving it so far! Isn't it amazing how different your priorities are at WDW (and in life in general) once a little one comes along? Totally different experience, but totally worth it! Can't wait to read more!

Holly!!! Welcome back! I'm so excited you are here and we will now have more trip reports to read!!
Of course your report does not disappoint so far. I love that you became "those people" who bring too much, stop in the middle of Main Street, and the list goes on. I think recognizing you are "those people" is the first step of the program. Lol!
Of course we are all "those people" sometimes.
How completely appropriate that your first family picture in park was a mirror shot?
And I'm so glad you were okay with not doing as much. You did what was important! :)

Thanks, Tammy!

You know, I didn't even think about the fact that our first family shot at a park involved a mirror! I'm guessing no one should be surprised by that, though.

It is so true that we are all "those people" at times. Life is all about perspective, isn't it!?

So avoid Tomorrowland's changing station. Have only one goal for the day (do if you don't get it done you aren't too disappointed, and if you do more, you are ecstatic). Vacation is a bad deal for a sick baby, and don't let him sleep the whole way. Got it :) However, Luke is gonna be 10 months old than we go so it will probably be a completely different story. I love all your pictures of little Lucas. He is adorable. You guys are way brave to take him so little. Who cares what other people thought. Really, how many 3 month olds get to go to Disney?! He's now in with an elite crowd! (My hubby is 30 and has never been). The farthest I have taken Luke is Tennessee to my sister's softball tournament. LOL. I could have never done it!

You will be great, Megan! And you won't have "new mom" written all over you, like I did! Plus, with the age difference, I'm sure Brett will be a big help. Gotta say... one goal a day worked for us. I envisioned us wandering around the parks and taking lots of pictures and just enjoying the ambiance... didn't quite work out that way (mostly due to me stressing over little things and being severely sleep deprived).

There's still hope for your man... I was an adult before taking my first trip. And I'm sure your seasoned veteran of a son won't have any trouble acting as tour guide!

When we went at the beginning of this month we decided to fly mostly because eight hours in the car set the tone and it wasn't a good one. Flying had its own challenges, but I much preferred it!

Yay, another HollyBelle TR!! Loving it so far! Isn't it amazing how different your priorities are at WDW (and in life in general) once a little one comes along? Totally different experience, but totally worth it! Can't wait to read more!

Ooh yeah... our priorities are not at all what they once were. And even though I can honestly admit that I sometimes miss our old life, this one is so so much sweeter!

Hooray for another Holly trip report!! :)

You and Brett are brave, taking the little one to Disney at such a young age. But, at least you did it. Lucas is officially a little Mouseketerr now!! :)

Love the pics of New FL. I think from reading people's reports and seeing pictures it really is just so well done detail-wise. I can't wait to see it in person in May!!

And can't wait to read more. Honestly, I was scrolling through the TR forum thinking to myself "I wish Holly would post a TR soon!" And BAM - it happened! You must have been reading my mind ;)

Ahh Holly I am absolutely LOVING this TR! :D So happy you're back! Sorry the first night didn't go as planned, but sometimes it's the little things and that picture of you and Lucas is TOO adorable and I think makes up for it haha. Loving all of your pictures as usual. You and your Ohana are too precious, can't wait to read more!
P.S.- I'm glad I'm not the only one that wasn't able to read up on the New Fantasyland before it opened (yay college!). I think I did enjoy it that much more though when I went in January since I really had no clue what everything was going to be like.

So excited to see this posted! OMG Lucas is adorable. Seriously his hair...just so cute! Looking forward to reading the rest of this as always. Sorry to hear that this trip did not go as planned, but it seems like you've come to terms with the fact that your trips are just going to be different and full of new experiences.
I'm glad to hear that you liked Le Fou's Brew. I haven't been to Disney since New Fantasyland opened to try it, but I love apple flavored drinks (aka apple juice) so I am thinking I will like it?
Anyway, yay for small victories and getting Lucas on his first ride. Can't wait to read the rest!! :D

We need time for things to happen.
Apparently you're a veteran Trip Reporter my bad for not catching them in the past.
I'm on board for this one.

Great pics and let me say that is one cute looking little dude you got there...
I would have known this fact even if I didn't have eyes of my own because my wife and daughter were just "ooohhinnggg" and "aaawwwwwwwiiinnnng" at all the pics of him over my shoulder. ;)

Can't wait to see more!

Thank you so much! We're head over heels for the little boy! I totally know what you mean about wanting to experience New Fantasyland with fresh eyes. That's how it was for me, and I loved how everything was so new to me. It has been, like, FOREVER and a day!

Congrats on your little man! And hooray for our official little mouseketeers! We took Lucas back a couple weeks ago and it was a completely different experience for us at 7 months than it was at 3 months. In fact, Brett was reading this earlier and he commented that it was so weird to "go back" to that place and time.

Hooray for another Holly trip report!!

Darolyn! I'm a pretty impressive mind reader... sometimes I even have telepathetic powers. I wish I had had more time to take in New Fantasyland and photograph it, especially all those details.

Thank you so much! I love that picture... and it really was the best little moment for me that night. Well, that and when I cried all the way to the parking lot. :) Hah!

Wasn't it so nice to view New Fantasyland with completely fresh eyes? It was great going in with no preconceived notions based on what other people were saying.

So excited to see this posted! OMG Lucas is adorable. Seriously his hair...just so cute! Looking forward to reading the rest of this as always. You are too sweet! Thank you. Honestly, the hardest thing about this trip (and much of the first six months of his life) was the sleep deprivation. I'm excited about every little thing coming up... I can already envision future trips as he starts to really take things in and grow.

Brett and I decided to maximize our time with a happily fed baby and attempt a table service lunch. Tony’s had walk up availability so I gave them our name and Brett and Lucas parked the stroller. I swear I’m never going to get used to that.

IMG_7191.jpg

Overall, lunch went well. Lucas got fussy on us and we ended up having to take turns eating, while the other person took him out and walked around with him. We refuse to be those people who let their baby cry throughout an entire meal and disrupt all the other diners around them. So I’m happy to report… we’re NOT those people now. ;)

Brett ordered manicotti, and I had balsamic glazed pasta. It certainly wasn’t my first choice on the menu; however, at the time tomatoes really bothered Lucas’ stomach, so I was avoiding them entirely. I already knew the pasta wasn’t going to be my favorite, but I was still surprised by how oily the vinaigrette made the whole dish.

Lucas fell asleep just in time for dessert. We shared a pumpkin cheesecake and a pistachio crème brulee , and while I’m not usually a huge brulee fan, this one was fantastic. And the pumpkin cheesecake was very good, but I compare every pumpkin cheesecake I have to one we indulged in at the Flying Fish years ago and nothing will ever top it, so it isn’t exactly a fair comparison. Again, the dining plan is WAY too much food for us, but I did enjoy the fact that dessert was included. And in the case of Tony’s, it was the best part of our entire meal.

I wanted to run through the Big Top to check on some merch, so Brett offered to stay outside with the little guy. We figured strollers weren’t allowed because of the small spaces. Hah. There were strollers all over that store. Of course. Disney isn’t going to ban strollers from merch locations, they’d make a whole lot less money if they did. Obviously, we still had a lot of learnin’ to do!

I’m loving all the love for Pete these days. He’s a favorite of ours. So, here and now, I’m going to start whining for a Pete meet and greet. You never know, it might happen. I whined for Gaston for years, and he recently set up perma-residence at his tavern. A girl can dream, right? My what lofty dreams I have. ;)

We had another first to check off the list for Lucas… his first character meet and greet! This topic probably got a lot more traction in our house than his first ride. I mean, it’s not every day you get to meet your first character. And while we hadn’t actually decided who it would be ahead of time, I think Brett secretly wanted it to be Goofy. So when we entered Pete’s Silly Side Show, I was pretty excited to see that the Great Goofini was up first!

Lucas welcomed this Disney first just as he did his arrival on property, his first park, and his first ride…

He woke up while we were in the midst of our Donald photo and was NOT impressed. Honestly, I don't think it had anything to do with being afraid of Donald, and everything to do with not feeling well/waking up suddenly. Love this picture though...

IMG_7252.jpg

It was funny because when he started crying, Donald made like he was trying to charm him with his voodoo powers. Didn’t work!

It had been such an amazing morning and we really didn’t want to push our luck, so with that, we decided to head out for the afternoon.

It’s already weird looking back at many of these photos, like the last one. The Lucas of today rarely ever wants a paci; in fact, the only time he takes one is when he goes to bed at night or down for a nap. It’s kinda crazy to think that he is already more than twice as old as he was when we took him on his first trip. In some ways, I feel like I’m writing about a whole different person, he’s changed so much (in development, obviously, but in temperament, too). I look at our trip to Disney as a turning point. The first three months, he was a very difficult baby. He didn’t sleep well and he would often cry nonstop from feeding to feeding. But since then he has been a little dreamboat. Always happy, always smiling. We’re still working on the sleep. ;) Although, it has gotten better much better here in the last month.

Our afternoon was spent eating and swimming. There may have even been a little family nap thrown in there for good measure.

IMG_7267.jpg

Around 6:00 pm we decided to head over to Downtown Disney. Knowing the chaos that would be parking, and wanting to take advantage of resort amenities, we decided to take our time strolling down to the boat launch instead of rushing off to the parking lot. We waited almost an hour for a boat and, in hindsight, realized we probably should have just driven. Lucas was being so dreamy the entire time though, pleasant as could be, and cooing at the little girl in front of us in line.

Lucas didn’t seem to mind the boatride at all and when we got there we popped him in the Baby Bjorn and made our way straight to the Earl. Brett and Lucas found a table and I hopped in line to get our dinner. It took a little while, but I’m always impressed with the efficiency of the Earl. They move a seriously long line through the queue on a very regular basis. By the time I made it to the table our little man had put on his cranky pants, so I took him outside and walked with him for a while while Brett ate. When we switched, Brett went and found a place to feed Lucas while I ate my sandwich.

FYI for the nursing mothers out there… unlike at the parks, DTD does not have a dedicated place for breastfeeding little ones. I’m still trying to find my way with nursing in public places, but let me just say, during this trip I noticed many mothers nursing all over WDW. Very discreetly, might I add. So much so that unless you are looking for it, you likely won’t even realize this is what’s going on.

But that’s neither here nor there… after we had dinner we tried to wander around, but the place was chaos. After a stop at Once Upon a Toy to pick up a new plush, we ended up just taking turns running into a few stores. It was much easier than navigating a place like the World of Disney with a stroller.

Lucas didn’t know what to think of the pinchy little crab we picked up in honor of his first ride.

IMG_7296.jpg

It’s funny how quickly babies change, because today Lucas would be reaching and grabbing at Sebastian, challenging him to a pinching duel.

IMG_7304.jpg

IMG_7306.jpg

IMG_7307.jpg

IMG_7311.jpg

Someone was getting sleepy and we wanted to be sure we made it all the way back to the room before he got upset again, so we headed off to the boats. For whatever reason, with whatever bug he was fighting, this kid was getting upset far too quickly between feedings. And, every time, it seemed the only thing that would come even remotely close to calming him down was nursing.

Seeing as how I’m commenting on bathrooms this trip report, Downtown Disney leaves a lot to be desired in this department when it comes to changing a baby. The three of us had a rather hilarious experience in the family restroom over by Tren-D. And I don’t recommend it, but we’ll just leave it at that.

We climbed aboard the boat with lots of tired folks and settled in for the ride back to Port Orleans. And wouldn’t you know, Lucas decided to be THAT baby. OMG. I was mortified. And if we hadn’t been trying so hard to sooth the little man, I probably would’ve dove overboard. He cried. And wailed. And screamed. THE ENTIRE TRIP. We’re talking inconsolable. And the folks on our boat can attest to one thing… it was a very long ride. I could just feel the eyes all watching us in the dark. Judging us. Brett was finally able to calm him down right as we were docking, and the man across the way looked at me and snarked “Not a happy baby, is he?” At that very moment I made a mental note to always, ALWAYS, share a kind thought with any parents I see in the same situation in the future. A simple, “Hey, we’ve all been there,” would’ve gone a really long way.

The funny thing is, as we were leaving DTD, we had a conversation as to whether it would be best to take the boat or a bus back to the room. We decided on the boat because the motors in those things are so loud that we figured if Lucas did get upset, he’d hardly be heard. Hah! Never underestimate the power of a baby's lungs! I can’t imagine how much worse it would’ve been on the bus.

The little guy had worked himself up so much that he quickly turned into a ball of goo on our walk back to the room.

Brett’s face says it all.

IMG_7314.jpg

We put him down and it wasn’t ten minutes later he woke up to play. Happy as could be. Sigh.

Up Next... Lucas (and Babby the Giraffe) take their first trip to the Animal Kingdom!

Holly. Ugh. Where to begin??? I know! First, I've missed you soooo but I know you're on the Momma journey so I always wish happy things for you in spite of my missin' ya. I think what I've missed most is the way you capture the little moments. All the little things. Makes me remember things I hadn't thought of in so many years. Tough road trips. Overwhelming emotional moments ((when Chandler was itty bitty I kid you not, he'd cry and I'd cry sometimes)). Sadness over losing the simple child-free days and joy for all the beautiful moments that never would have been had your little angel not joined your Ohana. Being able to look at a pic of your baby and see that he's not well. We have a set of portraits like that. Never liked them. Took me a few years to realize it's because my baby looks unhappy and unwell. Not being able to eat a meal together when you most want to. We still swear this is part of the hospital training these little guys get before we take them home: "If you smell food it's time to cry." LOL! And you're so right, our little babies do change and become different in such a short period of time. I look back now and don't remember a lot of the little things so readily but then I read a Holly report and the moments all flood back. Thank you for that.

I love that you are "those people". Don't worry so much about what others think. They'll get over it or die of it. Don't let worrying about others stress you. It's your turn. You've listened to crying babies before and you will again. Lucas is taking his turn. It's okay. But, I hear ya on the words of encouragement. Chandler was the worst with tantrums and sometimes I thought his fits in public would be the death of me. Best moment ever was when he was in a total hysterical fit in the middle of a bustling mall (you know, where the screams freakin' echo), I was waiting it out, and a couple of elderly ladies came over to me. They patted my shoulder softly, smiled sweetly, and said, "You're doing a great job, sweetie. Hang in there." To this day, that means everything. Truly.

Kudos to you and Brett for taking Lucas even for the difficult infant age when you have to haul half the house around and actually do so little. You've got him out there. You're little Ohana is on the move. That's AWESOME! Wanna give that some perspective? When the boys were that little I was terrified to leave home with them by myself. Too many things could happen that I was afraid I couldn't handle alone. I would've had a heart attack at the thought of taking them to WDW even with 2 of us. You guys are the shiz, woman! I've said it before and I'll say it again, my only regret with Chandler & Brian is that we didn't do what it took to bring them earlier. We were the parents who refused to do strollers. And look at all we missed! So here ya go: pat on the shoulder, sweet smile..."You're doing a great job, sweetie." That goes for both of you!

I liked the LeFou's Brew, too! Tracey didn't like it. Chandler smelled it then refused to try it. Brian ditched us and wasn't anywhere in the vicinity to have any input. Yay! More for ME! Wish we'd have been able to *see* more of the New Fantasyland. When we were there it was jam-packed with people. Hard to really take in the area when you're weaving the sea of humanity. ((sad face))

Love love loving all the little details even if you didn't take pictures of it all. Your readers get where you are. You tell a vibrant tale, for sure. Hangin' on every word as always. Thanks for the time and effort, sweetie. :)

We took Brett for the first time when he was 2. Almost 3. While I was potty training. And I was so afraid of losing him, I was one of THOSE people who put their kid on a harness. He was always so curious, I knew he would wander off. (As a matter of fact, he did wander off when he was 6 and was lost for a good 15-20 min). He spent the entire time going to the end of his "leash" and barking at people in line like he was a puppy. He loved the harness. It was totally embarrassing, but at least he wasn't screaming like I've seen kids do. AND when he was 5, I still rented him a stroller in the afternoons. Yes. I was one of those people as well. The mom who puts their toddler on a leash, and their 5 year old in a stroller. But even as a kindergartener, the miles and miles we walk in a week at Disney is very hard. And they get tired easily, and even more easily cranky. SO unless you want to spend half of your vacation in your room, you get them a stroller when they are tired. Parenting is all about survival most of the time! So, congratulations, you are still WAAAAAAY behind me in the "we are those people" department :) (He no longer uses a stroller though, in case anyone is wondering lolol).

Does Babby go everywhere with you guys? I see him all over the place! He is a well traveled giraffe! We have a moose. His name is Mr. Snugger Moose. My cousin bought him at a Harry & David store in Destin, and he is a solid member of the family now. (And completely disgusting I might add from being drug all over the place and drooled upon).

And I totally feel for you with the having to take turns to eat! Its like, they have a sensor connected to your mouth. That whenever its time to eat, they suddenly are crying. That sensor is ALSO on the back of Mommy's head, so everytime she lies down, it goes off. Absolute madness.

Hi Holly!

Welcome back! I've been a longtime WDWmagic lurker and just happened to stumble upon your wedding trip report back in the summer. That may have led me to read all of your other trip reports . I just love your commentary and your beautiful family. Lucas is adorable and I can't wait to read more of his adventure!!

Holly! Welcome back, girlie! Motherhood definitely agrees with you!

Now...I'm not a mom so take this for what it's worth...but I think it's a good thing to be "those people" when it comes to Disney. Yeah you've got a lot of baggage and have to give up ADRs and take turns walking Lucas...BUT that's good parenting! It's the people who think they can get by just holding the baby 100% of the time (sans stroller/carrier) and say "hey I'm hungry we're gonna enjoy our lunch together and let our baby cry" kind of people that should be classified as "those." Babies need lots of stuff! I actually like taking the big stroller when I take my nephew shopping because I can store all my stuff in it! But seriously...good parents in Disney - yep you are THOSE people! :)

Can't wait to experience New Fantasyland in a month! I'm a little jealous that Lucas...an infant...has gotten to see The New Fantasyland before me! Unfair! Lol!!! I'm excited to hear how his 2nd trip went!

I'll be ever so patiently (;)) waiting to read more! Great start! Glad to have you back, Holly!
