The problem is Disney is shifting more towards Universal's model.

Universal's two parks are slowly but surely merging into a single concept: "Riding the movies".

In 2005/2006 when Iger took over there were four distinct parks in Walt Disney World, yet the minimal updates he has made to the existing parks have slowly merged them all into having less of a focus on those individual identities. This is a problem, and what's worse is that current leadership doesn't recognize it as one. They are very much driven by "safe" intellectual property driven decisions to "improve" the parks.
And comics, children's books, video games, late night talk shows, etc.

It's kind of confusing actually :hilarious:

You are saying Iger screwed up the branding of the parks? I thought he was the king of branding?

I hold out some hope for Pandora as an IP based attraction. I don't expect the rides to just be a retelling of the movie. I guess we'll know soon.

I heard that early on in the boat ride, you'll befriend a little orange earth fish. He'll then become confused in the alien environment and get lost. Fortunately, you find him at the end just in time to participate in the ritualistic disembowelment of a direhorse, during the bloody yet strangely heart-warming Na'vi friendship ceremony.

Quick message about my visit to Tokyo DiisneySea yesterday:

- Wow, somebody made a huge mistake on the attendance forecast! Park open 10-7, food locations understaffed, etc. All good for a low attendance day, right? How busy the park was? 100-120 minutes waits at the E-Tickets, huge waits for food, etc. Still had a great day using fast pass and single riders, but a challenge to say the least.

- Indiana Jones Adventure looked great as it just returned from rehab.

- From the monorail, you can see the Fantasyland expansion construction has started. A good chunk of the parking lot is getting ripped up.

- Merchandise is going downhill even more. McDuck's department store is the latest victim of the Duffy craze.

Not sure if you've ever been but picture a store about the size of Star Traders with every single thing in it Duffy themed - were not talking about a couple wraps

Japan is just 'different' they have a culture which values cuteness and Duffy taps into that, In the US Duffy for most is 'Meh at best. Currently Duffy is the JP version of the Stitch craze of a few years back at WDW.

Duffy craze isn't viewed negative in Japan. You've got to understand Japan's long history of cuteness

I remember back when Duffy was unknown to the US before they brought him over.

No, I agree. Tokyo merchandise (from North American/European sensibilities) is abysmal.

Duffy is honestly about as good as it gets.

It makes me actually wonder how Universal handled Harry Potter merch in Japan, anyone know?

USJ actually has amazing merchandise parkwide, and in WWOHP, most of the same items available at the American parks. While they still have the cookies and weird stuff that TDR sells, USJ has a huge variety of actual merchandise. The JAWS store in particular was just amazing. Pocketwatches, specially commissioned Japanese-style art, Hello Kitty dressed as the shark, clothes, collectibles - and it all said "JAWS - Universal Studios Japan" on it.
