New development that might affect the Spider-Man movie rights and possibly leave them fully back in Disney's hands: Sony's looking into selling off their movie division.

Apparently, everything's riding on the Emoji Movie's success. If they can get a huge franchise out of Patrick Stewart voicing a talking poo, they think they might have a chance to keep going.

Yikes.
Good for Disney though, they won't have to jump through legal hoops to use Spidey in the movies.

Why would the Spider-Man contract not transfer to the new owners?

There could be a transfer of control clause...so that if it is sold, they can renegotiate/take back the rights. There wasn't a transfer of control clause for the Uni rights, so I doubt there is one here.

If Disney could somehow extricate Playstation and the Entertainment divisions away from Sony proper, this would be a more appropriate sized purchase than Netflix. They get tons of IP, including Spider-Man and a major foothold in streaming user households.

Disney owning PlayStation? The "hardcore gamers" would riot in the streets lol.

I also don't think Sony would sell their one successful division.

On one hand, their fears would be unjustified because the die hard Star Wars fans and Marvel fans rioted when Disney bought Marvel and LucasFilm out of fear that their beloved franchise would be Disneyfied. And boy, were they wrong.

On the other hand, Disney's foray into video gaming has been atrocious: ToonTown, Infinity. Disney only does well when some other company has licensed their IP.

They get a whole bunch of IPs currently appearing at Universal! It might solve their Movie-Spider-Man problem, but it won't solve their park-attraction-Spider-man problem, and only give them more IPs they can't use in their parks.

Two things that I happened to just think of:
1. If Sony Pictures closes, this really screws the James Bond franchise... again...
2. Soooo, does this mean that the 21 Jump Street/Men In Black crossover is cancelled?

I think that Disney would do great things for Ghostbusters.

Their animation division was doing fine with Hotel Transylvania.. why the hell would they need Emoji to survive? are they aiming that low?
