Marvel is absolutely planned to be a component of the third gate in the swamps. I have heard chatter that the Dr. Strange IP might find a home in the Tower instead. I am simply relaying this because it does NOT come from any of my trusted sources.
Forgot about this bit in all the Hong Kong hubbub.

I would still be mad that they're changing something that absolutely does not need to be changed AT ALL but I can at least see some shred of sense, however minuscule, behind this plan compared to the giant warehouse, power plant, middle finger thingamajig.

Frozen Land...

And Disneyland by the sounds of it.

That's what the Ant-Man ride is? At least it's not something iconic. Let's see how it goes. Is it the smaller building that's shown?

Now HK is getting rid of their Speedway? Ok, no excuses anymore. They all need to go for the greater good.

Maybe DL's can stay though. Maybe...
I'm sure the Frozen crazy will be all a memory by 2020

Aesthetic wise, this new castle takes from Beauty and the Beast, Tangled, and Sleeping Beauty. The colors are spot on, the style is very fairytale, and the mountains won't dwarf it. I really have no qualms whatsoever with this upgrade and if they do this right, it could end up better than Paris.
Parts of the castle look like it was based off the designs from Aladdin.

Wow!!!

I don't know what to say about HKDL as I've only received a few notes and I have no time with Turkey Day travel coming up to source this.

But I do know where the money came from suddenly. Recall that frozen second gate? Well, now we can officially call it Frozen. As don't expect it to happen for a decade or more. All of those funds were transferred to this.

The castle still isn't being bulldozed. It is being re ... re ... I don't even know what to call it, really. You will have the existing structure topped off by some truly bizarre hybrid of Orlando/Tokyo and Shanghai with some middle eastern design elements.
The fact that Doris is riding herd on the project can't be overstated because of her role on SDL and her ancestry.

A lot of dots have been crossed by these developments too. Like why Frozen was pushed to a later build in Tokyo. That was clearly a move designed to appease the SAR officials who have been burned by Disney since the late 90s. They'll have it first -- before TDL, before DL. And why Autopia has been closed so much of late with Imagineers seen skulking around.

It does appear official that Tomorrowland is leaving to be replaced with Marvel (I am sure y'all know my feelings on that one). Just from what I have seen in the art, plus what is not being said, it is pretty safe to assume a few major elements remain like Space Mountain and all get tied into this drive for IP.

I love the idea of adding this spending to that beautiful little park, but I can't help but think this is just throwing as much current IP in as they can with no real thought to any theme or master plan. But I'll say more, as time allows, when I know more.

Well, it's no tall tall. In fact, it was just announced.

Just reread your post... who sounds like the fool now?

Might want to take your own advice and check up on your sources.

Just one comment because I truly have no time for this now. I am not right all the time. But I didn't source his rumor beyond asking one person who clearly was on the outside.

But HKDL is totally out of Tom's wheelhouse. I know it. He knows it. Anyone reading me knows it.

He was fed some of this information (and only about the castle, which will NOT be bulldozed as he wrote). My strong guess is he was fed this by some O-Town fanbois who happened onto some of the plans/art online and figured "let's give this to the crazy guy who stirs things up for fun and see what happens". Or perhaps it came from someone on the west coast who doesn't like their employer and knows Disney doesn't like him and needed to leak something that can be widely seen (been told there is art -- possibly a model -- in a fairly open area of 1401 Flower), so no danger of them losing a job. Don't know ...

No matter, though, no one ... Tom ... me ... anyone ... had any details on the scope of this or that it was a result of the HK SAR and Disney deep-freezing the second gate, which opened up a very large sum of money. The castle additions may be the sexy storyline, but the significant one is how much is being spent, where it came from, what is being added and taken away and why.

If you get your jollies because I took some much-deserved shots at Amity Boi and for once he had ... well, a small part of the whole story right, then enjoy.

I really don't care. I am more interested in what is happening at that park and why it is happening.

I wouldn't be opposed to an air conditioned lounge-type area available to everyone. Just some sofas, charging stations, maybe a movie playing in the corner for the kiddos. I know that charging people to sit down is part of their business model, but I bet it would improve guest perception.

If only there were an air conditioned place where people could relax, charge their phones, and watch television on Disney property.

The not-so-technical term in architecture circles for this sort of practice is a "façadomy", which seems like the sort of phrase that would be right up your alley. Basically you take the façade of an existing building, and... uh... penetrate it with a new building that has no business being there.

Hearst Tower in NYC is probably the most famous example of this approach, but I have to think that the proposed work at HKDL fits the definition even better, since the both the existing and proposed buildings are really nothing more than a façade and the concept art looks so horribly tortured. But I guess some people are into that sort of thing...

Frozen and Marvel attractions planned in HK$11 billion Hong Kong Disneyland expansion
Construction of the new attractions is set to begin in 2018 as part of a six-year expansion plan for the theme park
Hong Kong Disneyland is set to embark on a HK$10.9 billion six-year expansion featuring attractions based on the Frozen and Marvel series of films.

The project is scheduled to begin in 2018 with the Hong Kong government and Walt Disney injecting HK$5.8 billion and HK$5.1 billion respectively. The expansion will also see a transformed Castle and Hub area with new day and nighttime shows and “Adventureland Show Place,” which invites guests to “Moana’s Village Festival”.

“We are more excited than ever about the future of Hong Kong Disneyland,” said Bob Chapek, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

Hong Kong Disneyland will be first Disneyland park in the world to feature the Frozen and Marvel-themed areas.

“We are bringing the best of The Walt Disney Company to this wonderful tourist destination, giving guests from around the world an experience only Disney can deliver and an experience they can only have with us at Hong Kong Disneyland.”

The expansion also involves a major renovation of the park’s Sleeping Beauty Castle, which is expected to close to all visitors next year, Doris Woodward, executive creative director and producer of Walt Disney imagineering, Asia told the Post.

She added the project would require two years to enlarge the scale of the castle to host more shows, and was scheduled to completed in 2019.

Samuel Lau, executive vice president and managing director at Hong Kong Disneyland suggested visitors visit its other attractions during the castle’s construction period.

The expansion comes after the park’s first descent into the red in five years and large-scale layoffs earlier this year. It lost a total of HK$148 million last year, while the number of visitors to the park dropped 9.3 per cent.

Shorter lines, more fun: Hong Kong Disneyland still draws fans as doors open at Shanghai counterpart

Apart from the city’s tourism downturn, which saw number of visitor dip 9.6 per cent in the first ten months of the year, Hong Kong Disneyland is also facing stiff competition from its mainland counterpart.

Shanghai Disneyland – which opened in June – had been flooded with visitors. . The mainland park is three times bigger, but ticket prices are similar to those charged by the Lantau park.

Holy . Yay!!!

I like the facts, I enjoy the snark. I largely enjoy reading you. But sometimes the overbearing arrogance (you compared yourself to Jesus moments before the news broke) and bullying (that's what it is - it's not shots, it's bullying) are going to bite you.

The only correct response is to be humbled and apologize.

I'm dissappointed people are supporting you on this one (even passively with likes). You are right that there is a collective who are unwilling to question your every move.

That's my two cents. I'm sure it won't be popular. Of course we are still friends, and will eagerly read along, but I don't like bullying. It's a schtick I think you'd be a way bigger person to drop.

Now back to the HKDL news which I've been eagerly wanting to discuss with you for like three years!! :D

Wow...Disney has pretty much taken over Variety's website today. That is a pretty massive PR push.
"What captivates Iger about 91-year-old Jiro Ono, reputedly the world’s finest sushi chef, is his unflinching commitment: Never stop striving to improve yourself and your work. The Japanese call such master craftsmen shokunin, and a generation of top Disney executives has now been introduced to the shokunin spirit by Iger." - Variety Article

I think I might be sick all over my keyboard...

I agree spirit I respect your information and the way you share but I do agree sometimes you take the stichk way to far. Also as much as I hate Tom you have to give credit to him regardless of his sources and how he got the information. Point blank is he made a correct call and you dismissed it blindly and I think an honest apology is more in order rather than the spin you stated.
