Not sure how politics play into cord cutting; end of the day, that's what's at the heart of the crisis ESPN is facing.

And saying "leave politics out of (whatever)" is typically pretty fruitless. I realize I'm saying this as a civics teacher, but the textbooks all say it clearly: like it or not, everything is political. Not everything has to be partisan, of course, but everything, including sports in a very big way, is political.

Regardless, though, again, politics on a sports channel, whatever they might be, won't be the big factor driving cord cutters.

Will politcal content on a sports channel drive cord cutting, Probably not

will it negatively effect ratings and in so doing negatively affect advertising revenue, probably yes as ad rates are based on ratings and share of viewers

And i was on the ride yesterday! My first visit to disneyland and he decided to do that after I rode!

I would have lost my mind of that happened to us.

BTW not that anyone argues the fact but their pirates >>>>>>>>>>>>>> wdw pirates.

I'm off to the parks again today.
I'm hoping he does it again when I go during D23.

"ESPN exchanged a scalpel for a chainsaw, skipped the fat entirely, and went straight to cutting out muscle."

Sounds like they are taking their cue from their corporate overlord...

Yes that strategy is quite familiar to fans of WDW...

The difference is that ESPN if it follows current trendlines will indeed be out of business by 2019 or so, The question is does it take TWDC down with it.

Did you forget your sarcasm font again? ;)

No - ESPN is losing between 10-20,000 subscribers PER DAY and the trendline is accelerating and there is no bottom in sight.

All those layoffs yesterday, combined they do not make up the rights payment for a SINGLE Monday Night Football broadcast.

And ESPN has massively overpaid for its NFL/NBA rights compared to other networks

In short ESPN has a unsustainable business model.

You know, I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that no, ESPN will not have gone out of business by 2019, and neither will have the Walt Disney Company.

I dont think ill take that bet, On CNBC yesterday the talking heads were chattering about how DIS was up due to the MOVIES yet the movies are a small portion of DIS revenues. Wait till DIS has 2-3 John Carter, Lone Ranger flops in the MCU or SW franchises watch how fast sentiment goes negative.

No one but a few contrarians are paying attention to ESPN's struggles, A&E just lost their ratings driver 'Duck Dynasty' or the decline in admissions at WDW, TWDC's buying the perpetual money pit DLP or DIS'es inability to adapt to the digital age.

But its all good because the Buyback train is still chugging down the line so no one is looking under the hood

I don't see it happening for Star Wars (commercially, that is; critical flops are possible though), but Marvel is unfortunately due for one. Thor 2 was okay, but not terrible, but if Marvel makes a movie as bad as their Iron Fist show, it would look bad for the company.

Ok. And how long will I have to wait for this to happen?

Everyone one else realizes that the studio segment is not about batting 1.000
It's about a batting average whose sum remains healthy and is a feeder for other divisions of the company (through it's licensing and brand generation)

The problem is when film projects get so big (or so few) that a miss impacts the viability of the studio to continue financially because of too much debt.

The market cares about the pipeline of properties Disney has.. and their execution of returns vs investments. Individual flops (even mega ones) are issues for the accountants and what the quarterly number looks like.. not concerns for the future performance (which drives share value)

Fans: Disney should be more like Universal!
*Disney switches to a Universal-like "temporary overlay" attraction model*
Fans: No! Not like that!

Disney should be more like universal in that it does not take almost a decade to get a new attraction online.

In the time it took UNI to demo Twister and replace it with Fallon Disney has been unable to complete a bloody gazebo at AK.
