let's face it: outside of monday night football, what do you have left? so what are you left with? MNF. and unless you have a your fantasy match up coming down to the wire OR your actual team is playing, most people are burnt out from sunday football, have to get up for work, and on and on it goes.

ESPN gets paid that much because of college football, not pro ball.

I'm not against shaving, I'm against being forced to be a female when I'm not. I didn't plant hair on my body during spring planting and wait for it to mature so I could harvest it. I grew it because I have testosterone and that is what makes me a person of the male gender. Had no control over it at all and don't want any. I am what I am. I have no desire to look like a female anymore the females desire to look like a male. Vive La Différence!

Well, to be fair, women don't plant hair on their legs, either, but we're expected to shave them anyway. Just sayin'. :)

yes. the only reason most people haven't cut the cable chord yet is live sports (and the blackout restrictions that prevent you from getting your in-market team on streaming models like MLB.tv, NHL Center Ice, NFL Sunday Ticket, etc). but there's a big push to remove those restrictions, and when the leagues start to see that they can cut out the revenue middle man, it'll happen.

ESPN needs to re-find their sweet spot. particularly what made the network so good from '79-the mid '90's. it had nothing to do with cushy relationships with the athletes they covered. it had everything to do with their investigative journalism. right now, their 30 for 30 series is the best thing they do on the network, by far. if they can reinvent themselves, they'll be fine. but if i had to guess, the network will look very different than it does right now in 10-15 years.

I agree with All of this.

I've cut the cord before and the only reason to keep cable is Sports. And that price keeps getting higher and higher.

Love their 30 for 30 and investigative series.

Cutting 100M from a TV budget? Well, clearly some of the higher paid talents will have to go.

Beyond broadcasting sporting events I think ESPN might be in trouble. Not the type of trouble where they go away, but enough where the public will notice fundamental changes.

And if ESPN is in trouble TWDC is in trouble as ESPN is TWDC's biggest contributor to income followed by P&R and consumer products in that order, Movies barely move the needle for TWDC as an income generator. On movies figure the studio will get about a quarter to a third of the revenue so if a movie GROSSES 1B Disney will collect about 250-330 Million depending on the distribution deal

it's more the fear of chord cutters. ESPN has pleeeeenty of money. here's a chart from the WSJ in 2014 that shows how much cable subscribers pay for carrying rights:

og-ac140_toptv__g_20140729144610_zpsewgxegsq.jpg

as you can see, they're not struggling. what they are afraid of is people who will blow off cable subscriptions for other web-based alternatives (sling TV, apple's eventual model, etc.) in my opinion, skipper is waking up to see that most people CAN live without ESPN, even sports fans. let's face it: outside of monday night football, what do you really want ESPN for, especially if you have to pay extra for it? every cable network has a sports highlight show. the talking head shows? olbermann was the only one worth watching, and now he's gone. so what are you left with? MNF. and unless you have a your fantasy match up coming down to the wire OR your actual team is playing, most people are burnt out from sunday football, have to get up for work, and on and on it goes. skipper knows a day of reckoning is coming where they can't justify charging that $6.04 per subscriber, and when it does, they're in for quite a dilemma.

Look at what's happening to Viacom. Many networks aimed at the teen to early 20's market. These kids get their entertainment from a phone or tablet and the ratings reflect that. The dam has burst and I don't think MTV, among others, will survive.

FANTASTIC article on Seeking Alpha from yesterday:

http://seekingalpha.com/article/331...pe5d:1apt4ib:6acb92254283f03d0f2774931d36225a

An interesting quote from it:

Disney is more dependent on ESPN's performance for their profits than they are on Pixar, Marvel, parks, cruises, and toys- put together. Note I'm not concerned about ESPN's continued domination of sports content, but rather their continued dominance of cablecos and millions of unwitting subscribers.

And another:

ESPN makes the lion's share of its profits from (unsustainable) subscription revenues, at nearly double the rate of its advertising profit.

The primary driver of $DIS most profitable division is $6 per subscriber subscription revenue. A la carte channels, 'skinny TV', etc. don't look good for the Mouses best revenue stream. To compare this to oil, ESPN may end up playing the role of the 'squeezed refiner' between the sports content (upstream oil) and the consumer.

And here's another thought that I have:

Whether China is going to crash or not (market's up today), the fact is is that China is using far, far fewer commodities, and has been for a while now. This is hurting Latin America - a market that TDO is hoping will keep coming to their 3 1/2 parks in the swamps and pay rack for those overpriced deluxe rooms...

I was debating about sharing this, since it isn't really "news" as much as it is further indication about what to expect at D23. I started to write this up earlier this week and said.. meh, it's already been covered by others here; but, I'm in a happy mood as I just lined up a super sweet Indiana Jones Pinball Adventure to add to my collection... so here goes something to help align your expectations appropriately for D23 as we celebrate the national holiday that is Comic Con.

I've mentioned before that while I don't have great Disney Parks insiders, I do have friends on the Lucasfilm side of the family. A conversation I had with one of my friends after the Board's summer boondoggle in Orlando and what I was told is very much in line with what Dave and Spirit have been saying.

Expect Star Wars details about Anaheim.
Expect WDW's Star Wars land to be referenced; but, not detailed in a much larger overview of the soon to be nuked from orbit Studios.

So, don't expect to learn much about the differences from what the West Coast and East Coast will and won't have in common just yet regarding Star Wars Land. Take this an indicator of both how far along one set of plans are versus another as well as an indicator of when you can expect them to open.

Always in motion the future is... and the Yoda dress wearing fanboy just upped the amount of Republic credits the Empire/First Order's troops have to play with.

good, MTV was relevant in the 80's and 90's, you know, when they played Music Videos...

Regardless of when they made the change, they would have had to do it anyway. People watch music videos on Youtube. There is no reason for a music video channel. As car makers add internet to new vehicles, radio will be in the same boat.

Thank you. It's probably good to assume whatever big Star Wars E Ticket is announced will be shared by both coasts so as long as we get that I'll be happy :)

Good point and I don't have a good answer, but, like anything else unless you are held at gunpoint, it becomes an individual decision. A tough one due to the fact that our society expects it, but, women do tend to continue with things for the sake of vanity. (men too, it seems) Not saying that is bad, but, it is the reason. I believe I read someplace that it was the invention of nylons that basically started that particular need to shave legs and it just held on. I do feel a bit of sympathy for people that are basically products of their environment and that is why I am taking a stand on being sucked into that social extreme. Just call me harry! At my age it is easier because I don't seem to turn near as many heads as I once did and probably wouldn't even if I were hairless or looked like Cousin It. There are very few perks of aging so I'll take my ability to not care and place it high on the list.:):joyfull:

Great to know.

Also... Tonight is SW's presentation at Comic Con.

Prepare accordingly.

More deep thoughts (but not from Jack Handey):

Just a personal theory of mine, but the Mouse may make more $$$ from cable subscribers who don't watch their content then they do from their parks or their movies - perhaps any other division outside their cable properties.

Never mind who doesn't watch ESPN now. How many that *do* will pay a premium to keep the channel? This also means smaller ratings - perhaps larger ratings for cheaper sports channels like FoxSports1 - and less advertising revenue...

If ESPN becomes an expensive 'a la carte' channel - people who need a 'Bayless' fix, instead of paying $5-10 (or more) a month to be screamed at by him, can just turn over to PBS (for free if you have rabbit ears) and watch his mild mannered brother make great Mexican food...

I agree, I should have added that the change they made was awful and now the programming is so narrowly focused, they need a miracle for a turnaround.
