A Spirited Dirty Dozen ...

Nope. If you recall, Our friend the Exploder stated as fact the Motion Picture division "Does not move the needle" when is comes to Disney finances. Interesting comment when you have 4 movies pushing or exceeding $1B. Maybe the needle is stuck?

You do seem to have difficulty understanding the difference between Box Office Receipts and actual revenue to Disney.

The Studio who produces the movie in the end only gets 25-30% of the box office receipts the movie theater and distributor and taxing authorities get the other 70-75% of the cash generated by the movie.

I'll be generous and assume Disney is getting 30% of the movie cash
So out of 4 Billion gross, Disney gets 1.2 billion (a much less impressive number) and out of that assuming each movie averages about 200 million in production cost. That adds up to 800 Million, So in the end Disney ends up with 400 Million in spendable cash - not chump change by any means but nowhere near what P&R, Media Networks and Consumer Products generate in spendable cash, hence - my barely moves the needle comment.

Of course movies have what's called the 'long tail' and continue to generate modest income flows for years after the initial profits are booked and that's in the end why movies continue to be made because with a sufficiently large catalog there is a nice continuing income stream which requires little effort to maintain.

I'm surprised that no one hasn't made any comments on the SW deal.

STAR WARS: TURNER SIGNS MOVIE CABLE RIGHTS DEAL WITH DISNEY

Estimated price of at least $250 million.
BY ALEX OSBORN Time Warner division Turner has secured the cable rights to Disney's collection of Star Wars films.

According to Variety, Turner signed a deal with Disney that industry sources estimate to be no less than $250 million. This partnership grants Turner the basic cable rights to 10 Star Wars films (four of which are still on the horizon), with a separate agreement being made with 20th Century Fox for the original film, A New Hope.

In addition to Turner, USA Network and FX Networks were also in contention for the deal with Disney.

Turner also has the basic cable rights to the most recent and upcoming Marvel and live-action Disney films.

I'm a little confused why it's only 10 (11 counting getting IV: ANH from Fox). I would think Ep VIII and IX are included, plus Rogue One which would only leave one other anthology film (the Han Solo, I would assume) but a third anthology film is also in development (rumored to be about Boba Fett). Would that one be in a different deal?

Nope. Not having a hard time. As you still pointed out, it generates spendable cash. Even if it was simply a loss leader driving merchandising, I would still say that the motion picture division is a needle mover. I am guessing other studios, right now, would love to be in Disney's shoes with their meager needle moving division. Oh and as we near the end of another fiscal year, are you revising your forecast of Disney's demise. I forget, was it this year, or next. Or, was it 2 to 3, 3 to 5. Was it at some mythical point in the future? I lost track. . . And for what it is worth, "Long Tale" is a pretty sweet term.

Still think Disney will blow up - 2-5 years, Media networks will lead the implosion the business units (P&R, Consumer Products, Studios and some of the cable properties) will survive individually but I don't believe the Disney mothership will. Disney is spending too much time managing the stock price rather than growing the business top lines and creating NEW lines of business.

If Disney had conserved the cash and built a war chest they would have been in a good position to develop new businesses. As of now Disney is one of the weakest media properties out there.

Seems very cheap - actually smacks of desperation.
