A Spirited Dirty Dozen ...

Yet, Michael Eisner was always faulted for being emotional (and he was), but I have never seen the pettiness displayed like this. That reminds me of being at the world premiere of Aladdin at DCA, which will always have a special place in my heart, as a VIP guest ...and watching afterward as Cynthia Harriss' trained plaids tried to keep me from speaking with Michael at the after party because she was (wrongly) convinced I was going to tell him to fire her ... oh well, people died and he did anyway.

Petty. Petty is the best way of describing this..... and thats the culture that exists anymore.

What people fail to realize is that the pettiness becomes a larger story than whatever it was they were trying to keep quiet.... Streisand effect and all that.

Sometimes I wonder if a friend lost their job in Celebration Place for being friends with me. I wouldn't put it past them.

Yes, lots.

But it got you to talk about "Steve Rodgers: Captain America #1" now available where comics are sold, didn't it?

I don't know the whole deal. And I am much more interested in Shanghai and Bob playing power games to silence voices that run counter to his agenda more.

But I do know they are basically saying the Cap has always been a bad guy and has allegiance to Hydra, which started out as a Nazi group. But who cares about history (or the fact the original writers were Jewish) and he is heiling Hydra to death... it's just some hipster writer trying to be bold, right? And since they'll kill the storyline shortly anyway, why be angry?

Oh, because maybe this is Disney attempting to destroy 70 years of IP of a character they had nothing to do with until six years ago. People got angry with George Lucas because they didn't like what he did with his OWN creation, but Disney should get carte blanche to do what they wish. Oh well, this isn't a comics board. I just find the whole situation typical of Iger's Disney.

Its hype to sell comics. Like when they killed Superman.

Need more evidence that attendance and spending at WDW is headed south? If you are a CM (or friends with one), then take a gander at these CM rates hastily tossed out recently. Disney is just being nice, I'm sure. Because if you are damn near homeless, then you can afford a $139 room at DAK Lodge!

The writer, Nick Spencer, has been working on Marvel titles since at least 2011 and DC prior to that. So he isn't really the new hipster writer on the block.

They're only doing this for the press, which obviously has been quite successful the past couple of days. Heck, it even got your attention.

@WDW1974 I know you said major announcements coming soon about Universal's developments so can you speak on this news that came out today?
screen-shot-2016-05-26-at-122304-pm-2*750xx987-1311-0-0.png

The proposed new eighth district would be "denoted by theme park uses, attraction, entertainment, hotels, leisure and resort uses along with supporting commercial, office and industrial uses," said county documents. In addition, there is what may be a "transportation connection" between the new theme park-zoned areas, which could mean possiblly a rail or road system connecting whatever is planned for the piece of land in the district.

http://www.bizjournals.com/orlando/blog/2016/05/universals-proposed-changes-to-i-drive-add-new.html

My only comment that I can make right now is that UNI has BIG plans for O-Town. That does involve another park (not talking Volcano Bay) and multiple new attractions for existing parks and multiple new hotels.

I would expect to hear about UNI's next big development later this year. :)

As for the third park, I wouldn't expect it soon ...much like Star Wars Land!

When you try and cut someone's tongue out, you don't usually wind up silencing them. Bob should know better ... or his inner circle (OK, pretty much Zenia and no one) ... should tell him 'this is a mistake ... if you ignore it, no one will be talking about it in two days.'

As to costing someone their job, that's never a good thing ... but this might be an exception because working at CP has to be an absolute soul-sucking experience.

I don't know him, but I know very few people in that line of the business. ... I get they are doing it for shock value. I just think what they are doing is flat out wrong and, likely, very offensive to the memories of the folks who created the character and the Hydra organization.

we'll have to discuss that second part privately.... Alas I wonder. They never gave me any info.... Just were my friend.

Recall that during the 80's up to the mid 90's even a lowly lot attendant started at 11 bucks an hour and as such those workers could afford a Disney vacation

It was not till the late 90's that the Strat planning boys discovered cheap immigrant labor

Point is WDW was not always a low wage hellhole with CM's living in Igervilles

It was a Premium resort and staff were paid accordingly

Disagree - businesses are some of the biggest lobbysts around.. for both good and bad causes.

The government governs business, not just individuals.
I do see your point and agree.

I see the method and timing of Bob's response I'll advised and unprofessional. He would have been better served to deliver his retort through a vehicle such as an Oped or a press release not a short retort over social media.

Also to inject himself into an ugly emotional primary debate is also bad form. No matter how rational his argument, he cannot win against the emotional force that is the campaign of Bernie. Bob picked a fight he cannot win.

It is odd.

Bernie Sanders suggests Disney should pay its Disneyland employees more, something that IS going to happen because of California legislation to raise the minimum wage, and Iger responds with an unprofessional Facebook post.

Yet Disney's direct competitor in China threatens to make Disney unprofitable and there's hardly a peep out of Disney.

Seems to me that someone other than Bob Iger is controlling Disney's message when it comes to China. ;)

Are these typical CM rates? That's like 60% off the current rate. I thought they were normally closer to 25%. And this is post Memorial Day??

What a BS answer deflecting the real question by suggesting that a Senator has not created jobs or done anything for the economy, (although he is the ranking member of the budget committee and labor/pension committees).

TWDC has such a huge opportunity to make a giant difference in the workforce of Florida. Instead of of creating jobs that will need to be subsidized and become state/federal aide recipients. So yes, in essence we are paying for these workers when we buy tickets at Disney World and when we pay taxes.

I know this may be an appalling concept to 50% or so of our friendly forum but...

What if Disney actually decided to pay a real living wage, in the $15/hr range. As the largest single site employer they would attract the best candidates and have their pick of people really willing to do the work and become great CMs. This would eventually force the hands of the competition to be compeititve and in turn raise the tide of the entire surrounding market.

Now I know Disney employes 10s of thousands of hourly workers(and lower level managers) and this would cost a few 100s of millions of dollars. But where would this money be spent? In the local economy, stablizing housing and maybe right back into the corporation. And I think TWDC can survive without buying back less a million ,
shares per year.
I agree with many on this board that Iger's comment seems petty, but the "I/we created these jobs" comment is pretty standard rhetoric from business leaders and politicians. Obviously, it only has a smidge of truth (the demand for goods and services is the main driver) and does come off as arrogant. Were you aware Bernie Sanders has a section on his campaign webpage detailing how he is also going to create jobs?

Regarding the rekated topics of Disney's wages, income gaps between classes and the $15/hr minimum wage some are advocating for, these are much more complicated and nuanced problems than you (and the politicians) would have people to believe.

I keep hearing ads for winning WDW tickets for "Summer Awakens" on the radio and how there's "Epic Star Wars Adventures" at Hollywood Studios.

What the hell are they talking about? You would think Star Wars Land was already open.

Just the usual Disney Bait-n-Switch and most of you have no idea how painful it is to write that as Disney in the not too distant past was not the poster child for sleazy business practice.
