A Spirited Dirty Dozen ...

Funny thing about this 'Living Wage' legislation connected businesses get 'waivers' that allow them to pay less than the new wage, Just another way for the crony capitalists to compete unfairly with small business who has to pay every nickel of the new higher wage, Yet the corporate store can pay several dollars LESS per hour than the small businessman
Yeah but the Unions already have a carveout which allows them to pay less than the new minimum wage

Isn't that loophole designed to make union workers a more attractive option to non-Union workers forcing more people to join the unions? It's about the unions getting more members and more dues. Basically a money grab for the union bosses. I don't think corporations like Disney are behind this.

I didn't see anything about companies getting carveouts for non-Union workers. I thought that companies were asking for carveouts for collective bargained contracts only. Are most of Disney's employees union?

In that article only union members are mentioned but there is enough literature out there on the other carveouts for 'connected' industries, In FL a good part of the workforce is unionized I'm not sure what the status is at DL.

I'm pretty sure most Disney employees are union, on collectively bargained contracts, and on joining the company union reps are known to give Cast Members a pretty hard sell to get them to join.

I can maybe see an argument made that if a contract was collectively bargained then it is in the best interest of the workers so it makes sense to create a carve out. Union contracts include more than just wages. If a union contract is below the minimum wage then I guess the contract would be void and need to be renegotiated. It's possible that workers could end up with a less favorable contract for other benefits like healthcare or sick time.

There is no good reason to carve out anything else. I did see where some industries like restaurants "cried poor" and attempted to get exemptions from the higher wage, but I didn't think any of those were going to go through.

@WDW1974 I know you said major announcements coming soon about Universal's developments so can you speak on this news that came out today?

The proposed new eighth district would be "denoted by theme park uses, attraction, entertainment, hotels, leisure and resort uses along with supporting commercial, office and industrial uses," said county documents. In addition, there is what may be a "transportation connection" between the new theme park-zoned areas, which could mean possiblly a rail or road system connecting whatever is planned for the piece of land in the district.

Now I am confused and intrigued . I thought the transportation improvement/changes were going to happen through a Kirkman Road expansion. Is there already a rail system planned for Universal Blvd? Otherwise I'm wondering if the "transportation connection" is going to be something like the existing water taxi system with 2 hotels on Uni Blvd and a water taxi to the new theme park.

For transportation they should take the Hogwarts Express to the next level.

Bob Iger is a giant crybaby. He's like an eight-year-old who can't handle criticism and pouts and stomps his feet and throws things.

The only difference is most brats don't have Zenia Mucha and her team of flying monkeys at their disposal.
This is typical of how Bob handles the media (or even simply op-ed bloggers on the HuffPo) who don't tow the company line. The LAT has been very fair -- and critical -- of SDL of late. And this is what Bob does to punish them.

It does speak to the state of journalism today that the LAT is still afraid of Bob. They should be putting out a statement denouncing him and doubling down on their coverage of DIS. But they are worried that they'll not get 'cooperation' and 'access' in the future to much bigger things than the premiere of a theme park stage show.

Not doing it the right way. They have an opportunity here to show that journalism isn't totally dead and that you can't bully and intimidate the coverage so it reads like a press release ... they have the upper hand here, I hope the don't pull a Sea World/Blackfish deal and totally blow the opportunity.

I agree with all of that ... but does it surprise you? Because it does seem like nothing that man (or company) does surprises me anymore. If tomorrow Bob said he is buying Netflix and rebranding ABC as NetflixToo ... or if he said that Disney would no longer hire full time CMs at WDW (although he'd keep the ones currently employed until they retire or wish to leave) ... or if he said, Disney is entering the casino business and looking to open mixed use DVC/hotel/casinos ... anything insane you can think of, I believe is open season until he just leaves. It's going to be two LONG years!

I'm never surprised by Bob.... he acts out of emotion.

Now we all Know i tend to be a tad ..... emotional at times and say things based in Emotion. (right @The Mom ?) But i'm not the CEO of the largest media company in the world.... Gotta be a cold, ruthless, Michael Corleone type when it comes to these things. You simply can't react emotionally to slights, perceived or otherwise. And to take that out on the LAT who's just reviewing a stage show based on a cartoon? Dear lord....

And the news is hot and heavy tonight.

Here's a little SDL morsel (I think I will double post it down on the Asian board, so when this gets 'borrowed' from here someone at least thinks about crediting the source!)

Don't know how or why the O-Town Blogger was allowed to wander where he did, or why Disney has been able to keep this hidden in plain sight, but Toy Story Land was simply delayed. It isn't dead and, yes, construction on the important stuff is well under way.

Apparently, it was always a Phase 1B development, which is why it was on all the opening menu docs and planning materials I was sent in 2013. It just wasn't labeled as such. And with so much so far behind schedule, facilities and development are not as far along as was intended (and, no, this isn't part of that pesky $800 million that went into a Chinese hole never to be seen or spoken of again).

Its purpose is to be a quick addition that is nearly finished on opening day, yet doesn't officially open until six to 12 months after park opening. Why? Well, in the worst case, if the park flops, it can be rushed to opening within six months as part of a media campaign to offer amazing "new MAGIC!" at the struggling park. Or OTOH, if the park booms, it can open a year after opening as a way to modestly (slightly?) bump up park capacity while keeping the media buzz going. That's why in those pics it looks so close to completion already, with just show paint and detailing needed to open.

The blogger claims the QSR will open in June, which seems contradictory because then everyone will know this land is coming ... but with Disney, anything is possible.

And there's more ... and not talking Phase II here.

The other little secret that Ops will have at their disposal in Shanghai is "flex spaces" within the park that are currently just open fields (like the one photographed by the blogger, Josh) or lightly landscaped spaces. If the park really does well and has capacity issues due to overcrowding, the Ops Entertainment team already has a short list of quick adds that go into themed tents and temporary facilities. Think the Millennium Village tent at EPCOT in 1999-2000, but filled with the latest IP from Marvel or Pixar or Disney presented as interactive zones and small stage shows. All to soak up crowds and add capacity.

What I am curious about, again, is how this has been a secret in plain view and why this dude was able to see it and take pics, which don't appear to be spreading. Dakota needs to get on this because Joe G. isn't putting pics of this undiscovered, secret, future MAGIC on his closely monitored by Burbank Tweeter.

Yet, Michael Eisner was always faulted for being emotional (and he was), but I have never seen the pettiness displayed like this. That reminds me of being at the world premiere of Aladdin at DCA, which will always have a special place in my heart, as a VIP guest ...and watching afterward as Cynthia Harriss' trained plaids tried to keep me from speaking with Michael at the after party because she was (wrongly) convinced I was going to tell him to fire her ... oh well, people died and he did anyway.

Unfortunately, I'm sure their advertising department has a say in this as well.
