The issue with Crimson Peak is that the marketing was all wrong. It was a gothic horror-romance advertised as a bloody haunted house film.
and Crimson Peak was absolutely gorgeous. A beautifully crafted film...If Del Toro did get a shot at the Haunted Mansion film it would definitely be made amd marketed to a specific demographic that would understand what they are going to see.

Crimson peak was boring and baffling. Like so many horror films it just didn't make any sense at all. Just start with protagonist's dead mother warning her to stay away from a place by using a long-unused name for that place making the warning meaningless.

When a horror film comes along that makes sense, like Get Out, it gets recognized.
