A message to Disney Security RE:Boston Incident today

WHO CARES if Disney security isn't flawless, the day I have to start getting strip searched and walk though metal detectors or body scanners to enter a Disney Park, or a sporting event, or any other large gathering is the day the terrorists win, cause I just won't do it. Could someone sneak a gun into a Disney Park? Sure, but they could also sit out in the parking lot and shoot just as many people if they wanted to. Looking in bags and purses at least keeps someone from planting a large bomb or carrying multiple firearms into a park.

I have definitely worried before today that security is not tight enough at WDW. I know this will come back to bite me eventually but if you aren't carrying a backpack 99 times out of 100 you walk right through.

I don't know about anyone else, but I don't advocate strip searches or metal detectors. All I ask is they at least arm the security guards. This whole "sherriff without a gun" thing may have worked on the Andy Griffith Show, but this is real life. And even Andy knew when to arm himself. We don't need strip searches, but I would have more confidence in the security if they had the means to enforce themselves.

On the other hand, perhaps it is a moot point if all the other posts are correct that there is already quite an armed presence hidden among the crowds.

I thought Disney had security everywhere?

As this video could demonstrate, or they might just be on a break up there I'm not sure.

I was thinking about that yesterday as well. Hopefully nothing happens to ANY park. Whether it'd be Disney's or Universal's.
May we all pray for those who lost their lives and were injured in yesterdays Boston Marathon.
If we keep allowing terrorist's into this country, this will continue, unfortunately...

I'm not quite sold on it being an actual terrorist, or at least not an experienced one. Simply because the explosives were left in the open, and there was no blast cone setup.

I guess I should have clarified my stance on this. The plain clothes security and inside men are the real security, it's the front door placebo that is a complete waste of time.

Precisely.. The illusion at the front gates is the problem, not security in it's entirety. Before the bag check at MK, the front plaza area actually had a logical 'flow' to it... now it's just a bottleneck of messes.

There is no perfect security, hence why the responsibility comes down to people themselves - just like most everything else.
I disagree about the entrance security being a farce though. At least it discourages amateurs and careless attempts, which is something. Large scale threat mitigation is what it is - it was never intended to be a comprehensive solution in and of itself.

Kind of like having the hump backed 85 year old lady at Walmart checking receipts for big items. Not a thing she can do about it if someone decides to ignore her, but it may be enough to deter a few people. lol

I never thought of that. I guess cause us honest people are in the line (at Sam's) to be checked. I have been in other stores where people walk out and the security alarm goes off and they just keep on walking. The employees just look at each other and no one usually does anything!

After working in a school for 20+ years I can say there is security theater you do see and real security you never even know is there, especially if you are a kid. That's the point.

I know a guy who works Disney security. He's not even supposed to tell people his job exists, lol. They tell them to give a general, non-descriptive answer to the question, lol. But when I get a general, non-descriptive answer to my question, I figure stuff out. I let him get away with that at first, out of politeness, but eventually said, "I know you're not doing X or Y. It's something Z-related. So, what do you actually do?" And he told me. :)

But he's there, dressed like a tourist, hanging out. He wouldn't be any help in a real crisis, lol. But they do have plain-clothed people doing security and watching for shop-lifters. I knew about the shop-lifting guys from being watched in the past, but didn't know they had plain-clothed security peeps.

Disney is pretty serious about not wanting people to know how much or how little security they have or what they all do.

Security is security. Doesn't matter where they are...in uniform or plain clothes. OP has a good point. Take the time to thank them for what and who they are....we can come up with preconceived notions all day about whether or not they are there for show and tell...or for real. They are humans and as such can only do so much. If I have to wait in lines for bags to be checked...so be it. It's not like I haven't had my bags checked at airports...or my hands scanned for gun powder residue (yes...me LOL) - they perform a function. Even if they are there for show....it "may" in all actuality deter somebody from doing something stupid. So let them search, let them stand there...let them do their jobs. Personally I'd thank them too!

At least 75% of Disney Security is comprised of things you dont and will never see. They take these things very seriously as its an international tourist destination that hosts millions of people per year.

A terrorist is someone who commits an act designed to create terror. Experienced or not, part of a group or not. It's not like there's a "certification" program.

No, but if I run amok in my neighborhood and stab a few people, are the citizens in my area not terrified? I think that "terrorists" is a word that is used too much these days. Much like "assault rifles" is used to talk about those big mean guns that the media shows you.

I disagree about the entrance security being a farce though. At least it discourages amateurs and careless attempts, which is something.

Until numbers or some kind of facts are shown, this would be pure speculation.
