A message to Disney Security RE:Boston Incident today

They're damned if they do, damned if they don't. If nothing happens, they're "doing their job." If something does, then at least they can say they tried and couldn't be more thorough because of "other issues" (whatever they might be).

Are they effective? No, not really. Not unless you're a complete idiot. But you'd certainly be complaining if you got TSA'ed every time you park hopped!

Lets just hope WDW security really has more going on behind the scenes than we all know.

Security is quite all knowing. About five years ago, I was in MK wandering around with a friend. We decided to get some orange drink and had just started sipping it when we saw that the line for Pirates was 5 min. We walked to go on, but were stopped and told we couldn't take the drinks. Now, being part Scottish there was no way I was getting rid of a brand new drink. So, I looked to my right and saw the 'cellar jail' windows at the front of the building. My friend and I hid the drinks there and raced to get on the ride. We were back within 10 mins and went to reclaim our drinks...only to see that they were gone. We looked to see if maybe we put it in a different window, but nope. A CM told us in their best pirate accent that they saw some robbers take our drinks and look at them...and then put them by a column on the side. Apparently, security picked up on camera my friend and I putting 'something' in the window well and came to investigate. Seeing that it was just a drink, they moved them and disappeared into the shadows again. After that, I never questioned how good security is in the park.....

Good to know. I have no problem with them watching if it keeps my family safe!!

Is there any kind of security/bag check on the cast member side of things? I can't even imagine what someone could do after listening to "It's a Small World" every day for a few months...

Im pretty sure Universal has a bag check for employees both going in and coming out as well as a fairly strict policy on xray-ing packages recieved at the mail room.

Fact: security checkpoints locate (legal) firearms daily and guests are asked to lock them in lockers designed for this purpose. Some people get so used to taking firearms everywhere that they forget there are some areas that are off limits. Also to compare the overall security before and after the checkpoints were enabled seems a bit skewed. The time before the checkpoints life was simpler and it was pre 9-11 and before all of the would-be copycats. I am not saying anyone is wrong nor do I want to get drawn into an internet slapping contest I am just stating that checkpoints taken in context with todays worldwide climate are in my very own opinion appreciated. We will never know what is located and or confiscated on a daily basis nor should we as the divulgence of such information would only encourage others to try on their own. I truly think that the bag check is a frontline, purposely visible thespian act and serves to make people aware that there is in fact a level of security present. You, me and the guy next to us will never ever know what other measures/countermeasures are in place nor should we. As always...just my $0.02

You mean that simpler time in the early 90's when the violent crime rate in the US was almost double what it is today?

Life was simpler before 9/11? In this country? Was this before the 1996 Olympics bombing? Perhaps it was before the 1993 WTC bombing? 1995 Oklahoma bombing you say? Like I said, it's nothing more than a visual placebo. Disney wasn't interested in security checkpoints when people physically planted bombs (ie Olympics) yet a mass plane hijacking is what motivates them? It's all about making people feel safe, as has been said before. I've never had my waistband or pockets inspected. Call me crazy, but most people that are going to sneak in a weapon aren't going to just leave it in their bag. Even the "gangstas" of the world are smart enough to tuck their "gats" into their waistband.

I agree that it is more of a theatre at the gates however the amount of plain clothed Disney Security officers that were on site when I worked there in the mid-late 90's was fairly decent. I can't speak to how many they have now. I just know that occasionally I would call in for a shoplifter or a domestic dispute and within a few minutes and sometimes seconds a guy with bermuda shorts, a ball cap and a Gators shirt would be there to take charge until uniformed officers arrived.

A couple of weeks ago, a bunch of college kids hopped a fence to skip bag check.

As they were waiting in line for the turnstyles, an OCSO deputy stopped them (rather gleefully I might add) as another guest had pointed out to security the guests who skipped bag check.

A family friend had their daughter abducted inside the park back in the mid 80's. Security was able to find her and catch the bad guy. The story and procedure as to how they did so was remarkable as it was told to me. The abductor had even cut the girls long hair and changed her clothes in the bathroom. She wasn't easily recognized and no longer fit the description the parents gave. That was almost 30 years ago and I can only imagine they are even more efficient and tactful today in all areas.

Yeah. Kind of locks on screen doors. Easy enough to get by but may be just enough to detour the person who's "on the fence". My grandpa always called things like that "Keeping the honest people honest."

Kind of like having the hump backed 85 year old lady at Walmart checking receipts for big items. Not a thing she can do about it if someone decides to ignore her, but it may be enough to deter a few people. lol

I am guessing they have quite a few plain clothes security detail near the front of the park and on Main St. I always look hard to find security cameras and have spotted a few. I finally found the one on top of the train station that I've heard about.

Yup.. Security at Disney is a farce, just like Airports... if bad people want to do bad things, they'll do it anyway...

Yay.. Disney checks bags..... what is stopping some whack job from carrying a load pistol in his pocket?

NOTHING....

It's pointless, all it does is make delusional people FEEL safer...
It's not completely pointless. Surely checking for weapons is better than not checking for weapons at all? This of course applies more to TSA than Disney's simple peeks inside your bags. Yes, a determined enough terrorist can find a new way... but by making it that much harder to get a weapon or bomb on the plane, its deterring potential threats.
