A few questions about DVC

Thanks for all the replies. And I'm happy to know that, should we seriously consider joining at some point, I don't necessarily have to go to Florida to do it, although I could always just schedule a walk through day on a planned vacation.

So what about this that you all are saying about the minimum buy in points being 160 for $16,400? I have charts that they sent me a few years back showing how many points for different DVC resorts at different times of the year. But those figures may be outdated by now.

Based on current figures, how many points would it take to stay in the most recently available DVC resorts in April, when we usually go?

Or maybe I shouldn't say the most recently available DVC resorts, since we wouldn't have to stay in our home resorts if we didn't want to. What about the DVC resorts that would interest us most, like the WL Villas, and the Boardwalk and Beach Club Villas? And maybe Old Key West?

Okay, 2009 was not on the web-site but April 20-26, 2008, which was Sunday to Saturday was 94 for Saratoga, 102 for WL and Beach Club, 82 for OKW, and 83 for Boardwalk. These were all for studios.

We never took a tour. Dh decided after our last trip that we should do it. So we called the dvc number and did it all by phone.:)

Check out the charts that were posted on the last page for points at specific resorts. If you have a standard time you go every year, you should be able to tell exactly how many points you will need.

Disneyshe's numbers were for 160 points. If you decided you would want that many, it would be $16400. Or roughly $10 a point.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I'm just not sure DVC would be for us since we're more interested in some of the non-DVC resorts, such as Fort Wilderness (where we have already decided to stay next time), Grand Floridian and the Polynesian. I would hate to committ to DVC only to continue preferring the non DVC resorts and therefore, not get my money's worth on the points.

Just out of curiosity, say we wanted to stay at FW, GF and the Poly...how many points would that be in mid April? I tried checking the link to those charts, and all I could find was the point breakdown for the DVC resorts, but nothing for non-DVC resorts.

Okay mid April:

Sun-Thur Ft. Wilderness 33
Fri-Sat 60

Sun-Thur Poly 42
Fri-Sat 76

Sun-Thur GF 47
Fri-Sat 85

Now that's for the cheapest view. They'll got up with other views.

So you can see how much more economical it is to stay at DVC resorts. :)

Monty,

You likely know this, but the sponsor of this particular forum has contracts available that are often for less than 160 points, priced less than buying directly from Disney, and offers a selection of home resorts. As you consider your needs, you may want to look at their listings. I have seen 25, 50, and 100 pt contracts.

SB,

I am a new owner at AKL. It is wonderful, personally. But I like variety too. One thing I have tried doing is combining my DVC stays during the week with non DVC stays on the weekends. This way I don't have to exhaust points on nights that require more points (Fri & SAt) and I get to "sleep around" a little. Makes my points go further and I get to stay other places too!

Out of curiosity, have you ever stayed at any of these DVC resorts: AKL, Beach Club, Boardwalk, Wilderness Lodge? I believe they would be acceptable even to the most selective Disney World junkie. Regarding Wilderness, the ammenities of Ft W. are just a short boat ride away. I have only stayed at the Villas at WL once, but I went to FW twice during that five days, and it was easy. And the place is NICE!!!!

Yes! I've been on their mailing list for a couple of years now. What this thread has done is given me a much better understanding of what I need in terms of points and the likelihood that I'll be going with the forum sponsor rather than DVC directly. Thanks,

And thanks Steve for initiating the thread that got me the info.

No, we've only stayed at POR so far. And, while I'm sure each of those resorts would be acceptable, I don't want to tie ourselves down to these resorts when we really want to stay at FW and Grand Floridian, specifically...especially if we stay at FW and fall in love with it and want to make that our primary resort. The spaciousness of those cabins is ideal for us and I don't want to get into a situation where I have to stay at the DVC resorts in order to get my money's worth. We may as well just pay year by year if we continue to prefer the non-DVC resorts.

So, hypothetically, if I wanted to stay at the GF, but didn't have enough points, is there any way of using all my points towards it and then paying the cash difference? Not saying I would do that necessarily, but I'm just curious if that option is even available.

You can definitely combine cash and points reservations. I don't think you can use partial points for one night and then pay cash for the rest of that night, but you can for example use points for 3 nights and pay cash for four.

Another option would be to rent some of your points out to another person, and use the cash from that transaction to fund (or help fund) your FW or GF stay.

Wow! I didn't realise how few points were needed per night. I've been considering DVC for a while now, but thought I'd need around 300 points... At 14 a night [is that for studio?] DS and I could stay for a week every year for 100 points. :sohappy:

If that's correct, I may do a DVC tour next month while we're there.

When we purchased, there was a minimum of 150 points but I don't know if that has changed. We have a little more then the minimum and being that we go right after the peak summer season(we go the last 2 weeks of Aug) we get more for our points. With this allotment we have stayed at SSR(home), OKW, and BCV for at least 10-12 days. We stay in studios mostly, but when Mom-in-law came a few years back we upgraded for the 2 bedroom and paid the difference.

Sorry.... didn't read through the whole thread..... I would have seen that you got your info.

Some folks mentioned buying resale vs. direct from Disney. Resale is the better way to go if you are looking at buying any of the older resorts (not SSR or AKV), however the newest resorts are typically offered from Disney with some incentives which keep their price at or below the resale market and you are in the system a little faster. Just something to keep in mind.

I didn't mean that you were at all... I did not mean it like that :) Just letting you (and everyone else) know that is what they told me yesterday. I thought, by reading online that it was 100 points but it was 160 according to the rep I spoke with.
Not that disney.com is generally the best place for up-to-date info, but http://dvc.disney.go.com/dvc/modules/genericPopup?id=GeneralProductDisclosures contains the statement: "Current prices start at $16,640, and $10,400 for Disney's Animal Kingdom Villas."

Maybe $10,400 refers to currency other than USD?;)
