A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes: A March 2011 Disney Wedding/Honeymoon Trip Report

It’s official! Brett and I are finally married and I couldn’t be more excited. We had the most perfect wedding day ever, at our most favorite place in the whole entire world. And of course, as expected, it went by all too quickly. I’m not going to lie, coming down off the high that was our Disney wedding/cruise/honeymoon has been tough. In fact, I'm hoping that writing up/posting this trip report will help me work through some of that. However, I’ve spent much of my spare time in the last few weeks staring at a blank word document... writer’s block? Never heard of it!

For the first time ever, in all my trip report writing, I did a pre-trip report. It lays out most of the wedding-related details, but for those of you out there who are like me and rarely read pre-trip reports, here’s a quick rundown of events:

Wednesday, March 16, 2011: Drive down, check in offsite for the night
Thursday, March 17, 2011: Check-in, Disney’s Polynesian Resort
Friday, March 18, 2011: Wedding Day, Sunset Pointe
Sunday, March 20, 2011: Board Disney Dream for a 4 night Bahamas cruise
Thursday, March 24, 2011: Check-in, Disney’s Wilderness Lodge
Sunday, March 27, 2011: Check out and head home

We kind of saw this trip as having three legs: Wedding/Cruise/Disney!

A look back at our Disney trip reports: September 2008 (Contemporary), December 2008 (Old Key West), January 2009 (Port Orleans Riverside & Disney Marathon), July 2009 (Wilderness Lodge Villas/Animal Kingdom Lodge), December 2009 (Beach Club Villas), March 2010 (Pop Century & Princess Half), June 2010 (Coronado Springs), August 2010 (Polynesian & Engagement), December 2010 (Kidani Village)

This was our first time on DCL, however, we’ve cruised a handful of times before. So if anyone is interested, those trip reports can be found here: May 2009 (Carnival Liberty), December 2009 (Royal Caribbean Monarch of the Seas), May 2010 (Emerald Princess), June 2010 (Norwegian Sky)

Oh dear. I feel like I’m embarking on what will be the longest trip report EVER (and I’ve written some long ones). My apologies in advance, as it will likely take awhile to get this report up in its entirety. The good news though, is that I’ve completed the text all the way up through the wedding, so we’ll get to that part fairly quickly!

With all that said, let the memories begin...

Killer photos of Castaway Cay. I especially like the wide angle stuff.

Like I said before, this really makes me want to go on a cruise. I think Tokyo DL is in the cards for next year (hopefully) and I can't see a cruise and Tokyo in the same year, so perhaps in 2013.

Wahoo what a great way to start a day, another fabulous posting!!!

If Brett was sick I would have never had guessed it. But I will take your word for it. I am sorry to hear that but glad he was able to get out and enjoy it.

Words I am sure can not express the beauty of the place, it looks so inviting. And so fabulous! I am so ready to pack my bags now. I am 28 days away from Disney, but now I am thinking of changing my mind.

So, you mentioned food choices. Did you happen to see if there was anything besides beef and pork offered at the stands? I only ask because I am allergic to beef pork and dairy, so I am always interested in knowing this stuff in advance.

I love how everything is themed. Its like an extension of the parks, and yet totally different at the same time. I totally don't think you have to be a disneyholic in order to enjoy it.....

again, I want more...I am going to be sad when this eventually ends I hope you know.

I’m pretty sure they had chicken, as well, but I honestly wasn’t paying much attention. Of course, they also had a lot of fresh fruit, which was nice.

It really is like an extension of the parks... you can always count on Disney to theme things perfectly. And whether people recognize it or not, it really does carry over to making a more enjoyable experience. I’ve been on four different private islands, and even though other cruise line’s try, they’re all lacking at least a little bit in terms of theming.

Ugghhh, at my current rate, this thing will never end.

AH! I <3 Castaway Cay already! It kind of reminds me of Coco Cay, except BETTER!!! And way more up my Disney alley! That picture of the gift shop area made me drool. I am one of those people that loves all things Disney souvenirs. I spend probably $300 a trip on stuff like t-shirts, beach towels, plush, etc. Christmas ornaments are my vice! I actually use the stuff too though, which makes me feel not so bad. Either way, I totally admire your guys' self control to buy only plush for your tree! I do not have that!

Is that walkway to the Serenity Beach REALLY a runway? I mean I have read that before, but it was always kind of tied into the whole "story" of Castaway Cay, so I didn't really put anything into it. But it really looks like a runway. I guess they have to have another way to get people on it besides boat? I didn't think it was anything before it was Disney? Idk.

Poor Brett for being sick! That is such an awful thing to be sick on vacation, especially one like this! I'm glad he was such a trooper though. You guys are so cute!

I find myself speeding through your updates trying to get to more more MORE, and then I'm done and think "dang it! I should have not read so fast!"

I heart Coco Cay! Sure, it’s no Castaway Cay, but it was the first private island I went to and I fell in love with it just a little bit. You’re going to be in big trouble when you book a Disney cruise, because the merch is everywhere! Very tempting!

You know, I have no clue whether or not it is really a runway, but I was wondering the same thing as we were walking out there. I wouldn’t be surprised if it is, it would be a great way to bring in supplies if necessary. It definitely was large enough for small planes, so who knows? Maybe Tammy can tell us. :)

Castaway Cay looks soooo nice! The first cruise we went on was a Norwegian and we spent one day on their private island...I think it was Great Stirrup Cay. It was the best day we had I think! Total relaxation! Can't wait to read more!!!

If you loved Great Stirrup Cay then you totally have to book a Disney cruise, if for Castaway Cay alone! I believe GSC was the first of the cruise line private islands and it started the trend. That being said, it is my least favorite of the four I’ve been to. Of course, that shouldn’t be too surprising because I’m sure each line improved upon it as they built their own version.

Gorgeous pics as always Holly! Castaway looks beautiful! Such a bummer now that Brett was sick. That's the worst when you have high hopes for plans and they get thrown a wrench by not feeling well. Booooo!!!

Thanks, Karen!

It's gone!! I was so sad in January. Apparently it kept jamming the machine.

Love your pictures from Castaway Cay though!

Booooo. I kept saying, “...but Tammy had cookie dough ice cream. Where is it? Where is it?!”

Loving it..Castaway Cay was simply AMAZING!...Maggie did the Stingray thing with Drew...she enjoyed it..Drew screamed like a girl when they touched him..

It was nice for her..and at $24 or so not bad..never did it anywhere else though..

We are excited to take a longer cruise to spend 2 days at Castaway Cay..it is HUGE..and soo beautiful!..

Brett did the same when we got in the water with them at Stingray City. It was seriously the oddest sensation to have them swimming all around and rubbing across your body. They say they love human contact.

Two days at Castaway does sound like bliss. We’re thinking about booking an eastern itinerary on the Fantasy. The eastern route is my favorite... add a Disney ship and CC and it sounds like the perfect vacation!!

Love the update. You are seriously making this non-cruiser consider a cruise. Just going to Castaway alone looks amazing.

That is such a shame that Brett wasn't feeling well. I also always seem to get sick and the most inconvienent times. Looks like you were both making the best of it though!

You should totally do it, Kait! Castaway Cay alone is worth it!

I'm a little late in the game here but i'm obsessed with this TR! It's getting me pumped up for my trip on the dream in August! Also, I have to tell you how much I loved your wedding dress. I always see the same boring, plain gowns whenever I go stalking around the internet looking at weddings (it happens shamefully often) that make me want to simultaneously facepalm myself and the bride and yours is one of the first that I've seen that didn't make me want to do so. And that's a compliment, trust me, I'm a very picky person.

You’re too sweet, madswithano! Of course, it’s always okay to have discerning taste. :animwink: One of the reasons I LOVED my dress is because I’d never seen anything like it before on anyone else.

Have fun on the Dream!

Oh NO!!! Poor Brett being sick! What a horrible thing to have to deal with on your honeymoon!!! Hope it was only a 24 hour bug!

OMG!!! Castaway Cay!!! I CAN NOT wait to go there! Our cruise is the double dip to CC. So I am thinking one day of lounging and the other will be for excursions... Devon wants to do the sting ray thing, but me not so much! I want to get out on the wave runners!

Can't wait to read more!

Ahhh the double dip! How smart of Disney to create itineraries with not one, but TWO, stops at Castaway! You should totally do the Stingray thing with Devon. They’re the most amazing creatures.

What a great report so far and your pictures are gorgeous! I never really considered it before, but now a Disney cruise is definitely in my future!

Thanks! As a Disney fan, you owe it to yourself to try it!

HollyBelle, I would like to thank you and be frustrated at you, 1). you just wasted a good chunk of my time when I COULD be studying, and 2) your pictures with Brett are so beautiful!

Your dress is absolutely goregous, probably the best wedding dress I've ever seen! And that picture of Brett looking at Cinderella Castle only makes me excited for the life I have ahead of me, and makes me wish I had a relationship that was so fun, romantic, and sweet as yours.

Best wishes to both of you, I don't read trip reports that often, but I really couldn't stop!

Ahhh, everybody needs a good study break! Thank you so much for the compliments. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy when people express love for my dress. After all, I’m still obsessed with her and looking for any excuse to put her back on!

Find the right person, and all those other wonderful things will fall right in line. Seriously, it's true!

WOW! I can't believe the amount of times throughout the day for character greetings! But it does seem like it's the same characters over and over. Any chances for a rare character greeting?

Also I can't believe you didn't do the 5K. You know you could do it.

I don’t think there are very many “rare” characters, as I’m guessing they only store certain ensembles on the ship. That being said, there’s definitely more opportunity for “random” greetings with characters just roaming the ship. And that is certainly fun in and of itself!

When we first booked, we figured we would do the 5K, but then in an effort to save space, neither one of us packed running shoes. :lookaroun Plus, being my first time on the island, I was dying to get out there with Ginger and take as many early morning shots as possible before the island filled up with people.

Ok my desires for a Disney cruise just increased by like...the THOUSANDS. Wow I will totally blame you and Brett when Bill starts rolling his eyes at me when I start trying to talk him into a few days at Disney followed by a few days at sea. Hmmm...

And I totally am craving cookie dough ice cream now!

The TR is fabulous and your photos of Castaway Cay are breathtaking. Can't wait for the rest! And I swear my TR is on it's way...I am getting settled in at work and once my computer in my office is up and running...I see myself finishing the text!

Blame away... I can take the heat. Bill will only thank us later when he falls in love with DCL and Castaway Cay!

Yeah, yeah, I’ll believe there’s a trip report coming when I finally see it. Gotta love slow days at work... they’re always good for catching up on the TR text.

Oh yay! What an update! I'm so jazzed about CC! Can't wait for September! Your pics are so killer, Holly. Wow. Just Wow. Poor Brett. How sad for him. I hope it's all uphill from here.

Brian & I are really hoping to run the Castaway 5k together. Bless his heart. He's been running with me so faithfully. Even when we were just in Alabama visiting my folks, he'd go to bed so late (like 3 a.m.) then get up with me at 6 to go for a run. He'd get back to the house, take a shower, and go right back to bed. I know the Navigator and everything you see says "adults" but I've read all over the place how teens or pre-teens accompanied their folks for it. So our short-term goal is to make this 5k. Our longer-term goal is a 1/2 marathon.

Can't wait to see what y'all wore for Pirate Night. I'm sure there will be no detail left un-reported!

September is going to be here before you know it, Kelly!

I think that is so great that Brian has been running with you. Good for him! The Castaway 5K looks like the perfect way to start your day. I definitely want to do it next time. I hear you even get a certificate (or something of the sort) from Mickey.

Oh, you know us, we were sure to dress up for pirate night! Spoiler alert: I heart Pirate Daisy!

*sigh* all those Castaway Cay pics definitely put me in the summer mood. Beautiful beach, clear day, warm sun...ahh... I can only imagine how relaxing it must have been sitting on the beach listening to the water and looking over to see the massive beauty that is the Dream.

Your character pictures were too cute! I loved the one with Pluto on the back of the golf cart.

Yes. Yes. And yes. You described our day perfectly.

Castaway Cay is beautiful!!!!! I love all the different character outfits they have for the dream, and even on the beach at Castaway Cay!

Stinks that Brett was sick, but he definitely seemed like the trooper!

Your trip report is making me want to go on a Disney Cruise! I've never been on a cruise ever, because I'm not sure how I'd feel on a boat in the middle of the ocean the thought kind of freaks me out a bit but I'm sure a Disney Cruise would make all those worries go away

Oh yeah, you’d be so busy having fun on a Disney cruise that you wouldn’t have time to freak out.

We've been having the worst weather in the world here, girl, and your Castaway pictures might have killed me - if I wasn't leaving for the Vorld in 67 days!

I feel bad for poor Brett, but it's good that the AquaDuck was enough to perk him up. You seem to have had perfect luck with characters this trip.. the Pluto/Ginger one is adorableee.

This TR is really keeping me pumped about our trip - and I see that Tammy has started a Vonder TR and many more are on the way.. IS IT AUGUST YET? DO YOU HAVE ANOTHER UPDATE YET?

Can I just tell you, that after your first trip report, I ab-SO-lutely cannot wait to meet the fam in this upcoming report! So you best be writing one this time around. :sohappy:

Just got some pics from the wedding uploaded. Is this the dress that you saw? (PS there are rhinestone hidden Mickey's in my bouquet! It was a surprise to me!)

254256_1767895434176_1142901050_31543644_6948637_n.jpg

Megan... you are STUNNING! Your hair and makeup is gorgeous! That may not be the exact dress... the bottom looks the same (LOVE IT), but it didn’t have a ribbon under the bust. You look absolutely beautiful!

Thanks, Tom. Castaway was pretty easy to photograph. Opportunities everywhere!

I’ll be supremely jealous if you pull off a Tokyo trip... that’s the pinnacle for us. Of course, at least I know we’ll get a killer trip report if you do go. :sohappy:

Get this... we noticed recently when hanging Hula Time that it is personally signed. #76 of 95! Not to mention, it was created by the same artist who painted our only other piece of Disney art (Stitch – December 2009 TR). We didn’t even know it at the time, but how cool is that?!

I know you have a trip sometime this month... are you at WDW yet?! Have fun!!!

Really?? That's great! You need to try to find more stuff by that artist. I do remember your Stitch...adorable.

Yes, we just got back yesterday! I was reading your updates while waiting for my ~700 photos to load in...:lookaroun

LOVE the character pictures...it looks like they definitely let loose a little bit more on the cruises. I agree, Minnie's shoes are adorable.

So sorry that Brett got sick...that's just the worst. :(

Can't wait for more, of course!

I know I'm pretty excited to get TWO days at Castaway Cay! :sohappy: I'm so up in the air about the Stingray thing... I'm scared I'll pay the $$$ for Devon to do it and then he will chicken out. And I just found out that I can not participate in it b/c I have a shellfish allergy, so IF Devon in brave enough to do it I'm not sure he'll want to do it without me. Decisions Decisions!!!

How old is Devon?..My Maggie 5 did it with her daddy and she loved it..water is shallow, wore a life jacket and it was a few steps from the beach..I stayed and watched...it is also not that pricey..under $25 I believe...I have pics of my daughter and others doing it in my report in the trip reports area..so check them out...I think he will enjoy it!..:D

Hi-I can not see the pictures in this trip report. Does anybody know why? :veryconfu

Most likely it has to do with the server where you are reading it from. I know from experience, that my school has PhotoBucket blocked, thus the pictures are blocked. You are probably experiencing something similar.

Oooh, I can't wait for your report, Shannon! Wasn't this an anniversary trip? I hope it was filled with amazing-ness!

Ahh, well you should have told someone in charge that! I'm sure it would have worked.

Hi-I can not see the pictures in this trip report. Does anybody know why?

I can see the shots on three or four different systems (at work, at home, iPad, iPhone, etc.) so I'm guessing dragwit is really on to something. Maybe try it from another source. I hope this works, because the pictures add so much!

I see what you're saying, but I think Devon would do just fine. I agree with Dana, and I think he would really enjoy it. Of course, it might help for him to see that much younger kids are doing it. I'm sorry you're not able to go in - I'm guessing it's because they entice the rays (and feed them) with shellfish?!

Back on board the Dream, I woke Brett up and we went up to Deck 12 to see what was going on. Stitch was just hanging out, checking out Castaway Cay.

IMG_2820.jpg

The view couldn’t be beat:

IMG_2828.jpg

IMG_2829.jpg

Eventually he made his way around to the Mickey slide, which appeared to be the general greeting spot for characters throughout the week.

IMG_2827.jpg

We grabbed some chairs and relaxed for the rest of the afternoon. As you can see, there were plenty to choose from. It was approximately 3pm, and I'd say most people were either on Castaway Cay or back in their rooms relaxing after a super busy day at Castaway Cay:

IMG_2830.jpg

The Aquaduck was still running, without much of a wait:

Finally they’d wrangled everyone in off the beach and it was, unfortunately, time to leave Castaway Cay.

Check out the drop off...

IMG_2851.jpg

As much as I say I don’t ever want to leave Castaway Cay, I think it would be incredibly weird to be one of the few people still there as the ship pulls away.

Buh-bye, Castaway Cay – I’ll be dreaming about you!

Onward, there be pirates in these waters!

IMG_2843.jpg

IMG_2858.jpg

Sometime during our departure, Brett went back to the room to rest up some more for pirate night. Once I’d finally accepted that Castaway Cay was, indeed, fading away in the distance, I found a chair near the main pool and settled in to update my handy little notebook with the events of Castaway Cay.

IMG_2864.jpg

Lucky for me, Lilo and Stitch was just coming on! Nothing beats watching a movie atop a moving ship as the sun begins to set. Nothing.

I grabbed a snack from Flo’s and headed back to the room to get ready for the swashbuckling activities to come. It takes effort to look like a grungy pirate, don’t you know?! There was an invitation waiting in the room:

piratenight_info.jpg

I can’t remember exactly what the main show was that night... it was a juggler, or magician, or someone else of the sort. We skipped it in favor of wandering around the ship, catching a beautiful sunset, and getting a decent spot for Mickey’s pirate show.

I think the show was supposed to start at 7:45pm, and we arrived about 30 minutes prior to that. The CMs were getting the crowd motivated and playing some pirate games with kids as everyone waited. I still think the retractable decks are the coolest thing ever.

The Aquaduck was actually still on at this time. What a cool time to ride!

IMG_2930.jpg

This guy kept us updated on the status of the show... and narrated a bit:

IMG_2939.jpg

Eventually, Donald and Daisy came out to get the party started!

IMG_2949.jpg

“Yo-ho, yo-ho, a pirate’s life for me!”

The show was cute, not as good as the sailaway show with characters, but still cute.

Afterwards, we headed straight to dinner in the Enchanted Garden. I was surprised by how much I liked the ambiance in here.

IMG_3139.jpg

IMG_3130.jpg

IMG_3135.jpg

IMG_3136.jpg

Because it was Pirate Night, the cuisine was inspired by the Caribbean and the music was themed to match. We found our table easily enough and settled in.

IMG_2985.jpg

Leo came up behind me and scared me half to death when he surprised me with a pirate cry! Arrrghhhhh! He then proceeded to introduce us to the folks at the eight top table right next to ours. By way of introduction he asked them if they remembered how badly the ship was rocking the first night, and then he pointed at us and simply said “newlyweds!”

On to the food – Brett and I ordered two appetizers to split. We had Black Beard’s jumbo crab cake, which was delicious:

IMG_2993.jpg

And a seafood couscous, which they referred to as “pearls of the Caribbean” Also, quite delicious.

IMG_2992.jpg

Brett ordered conch chowder and I had a jerk chicken salad for our next course. Both were good, but not as good as the apps.

IMG_2994.jpg

IMG_2995.jpg

And then for dinner Brett had Jack Sparrow’s short ribs...

IMG_2998.jpg

And I had Captain Hook’s mahi mahi, encrusted with macadamia nuts and served over jasmine rice (very tasty!)...

We ended up skipping dessert. I know, I know, who skips dessert?! I’ll tell you who... two people who don’t want to miss their only opportunity to meet Pirate Stitch, that’s who. We said a quick goodbye to Leo and Erhan and took off for the atrium, one deck above us.

IMG_3012.jpg

Yet again, the chipmunks stole the show... they were determined to make it onto someone’s pirate crew. Chip and Brett dueled for awhile, before striking a pose:

IMG_3027.jpg

Pirate Daisy’s line was the longest; although, I’m sure that surprises no one. :D I wasn’t really feeling her background... I mean, she blended right into it. And for those DSLR users out there, you definitely need a flash attachment for all the character pictures in the atrium. It’s dimly lit, especially when the characters are set up along the edges of the area.

IMG_3032.jpg

We figured it was time to pick up one last cruise plush. Only problem was, we knew it wasn’t going to be just one. :animwink: It HAD to be the chipmunks, especially after all their efforts thus far. And who can buy one munk without the other?! That would be just horrible!

They’re even wearing sailor suits!

It was almost time for the fireworks so we headed up to Deck 11 to find a spot. Just like the parks, the cruise ship takes on a whole different look at night. I love the neon!

IMG_3039.jpg

IMG_3040.jpg

IMG_3042.jpg

Soon after we arrived, the fireworks began. This is another feature unique to Disney cruises... as no other cruise line has fireworks at sea. They’re nowhere near the size and scope of the ones in the parks, but it’s still extremely cool to watch fireworks shoot off from atop a moving vessel.

IMG_3069.jpg

IMG_3071.jpg

IMG_3085.jpg

At the end, pirates appeared throughout the ship and a certain somebody dropped in!

IMG_3088.jpg

IMG_3043.jpg

Overall, I really enjoyed Buccaneer Blast. Immediately afterward, Club Pirate started mixing the techno beats and people started dancing. Techno beats really aren’t my thing; I’m more of a piano bar kind of gal, so we called it a night.

You know what the DCL fireworks have over those in the parks?! It's a much shorter and easier trip back to your room at the end of the night.

Up next... a leisurely day at sea
