Pre-Trip A completely unexpected, yet very exciting, "work" related pre-trip report!

I must preface this unexpected pre-trip report by stating I had no intention of visiting WDW in 2018 after we had such a great time in December 2017. Our plan has been to save up some of our DVC points and return in September 2019 when much of the park expansion work is completed. That said, earlier this year my mom participated in one of the Disney Institute programs, Disney's Approach to Quality Service, which was held over 4 days at the Yacht Club. She returned raving about the experience and how much she took away from the entire program. She made reference that if I ever had the chance to participate I should definitely jump on it.

Fast forward a few months and the topic of professional development came up around my office. I didn't think much of it until I remembered the DI courses so I started to do some digging. It seemed like most of my team here didn't have any programs they were interested in attending so I shot my shot and requested the same Approach to Quality Service Course. At first, it was not well received based on the total cost and the poor exchange rate here in Canada so I didn't put too much thought into actually going. But, after an application for a government grant was approved earlier this week to cover a significant portion of the program cost, I was given the green light to go ahead and book!

And so...I now have the good fortune of writing this completely unexpected, yet very exciting, "work" related pre-trip report!

WHEN: September 9 - 15, 2018

WHERE: Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa

WHO: At the moment this is a solo trip for me (Matt), though Kelly is definitely trying to find an angle to join with the kids. We'll see what we can come up with.

While I am super excited to be staying at the Grand, I doubt I will get as lucky as we did when we checked in for a short one-night stay in December before moving to the Beach Club. Should you want to read more about the crazy cool night we spent in the Cape Coral Suite, here is a link to the last trip report. The course itself will be held at the Grand from September 10-13 and I am very much looking forward to getting the chance to explore the resort even more this trip.

The session days are pretty full from what I understand but they include some pretty memorable experiences including tours of some of the backstage areas and a bunch of other really cool features that I'm certainly looking forward to. Along with the course, each participant is provided with a 2-day park hopper pass so I've planned to arrive a day early and stay a day after (which could turn into more depending if Kelly, Ella and Lennon find their way down) to get a small taste of the parks. I'm happy I've been able to confirm this early enough to set up a few FP+ reservations when my window opens up.

I will be departing from Edmonton in the wee hours of the morning on September 9th, arriving in Orlando at 10:30am. I'm just awaiting my confirmation number for my resort booking to set up my DME to take me to the Grand. I plan on heading straight to the parks when I arrive to have a little fun before things get serious the next day.

And while this trip is unexpected, the WDW planner in me made sure to make a few dining reservations when all this discussion started just to be on the safe side. I figured I could always cancel them if things fell through. Since everything is now going ahead I'm very much looking forward to the following dining experiences...

September 9- Dinner at the Plaza
September 10 - Breakfast at Kona Cafe
September 13 - Dinner at the Edison
September 14 - Dinner at SciFi Dine-In Theatre

Regrettably, we didn't get to enjoy breakfast at Kona during the last trip and since it's a quick walk from the Grand I figured I couldn't pass it up this time around. I'm looking forward to a new experience at the Edison and heading back to a couple of old favourites in the Plaza and Sci-Fi.

Dinner on the first day of the course along with breakfast and lunch on the remaining days are included in the course so I'm sure I'll explore some different dining options during s few of the evenings I'll have to roam around. now knowing that things wrap up around 430 pm each day I may add another reservation at some point down the road. I will say, the pulled pork nachos from Cap'n Cooks and a Dole Whip at the Poly will definitely make for a nice dinner one of the nights.

September 14th will be another park day for me before returning home the next day. The plan now is to visit Animal Kingdom first thing the morning, do as much as I can there, then head to Hollywood Studios to get a look at Toy Story Land. However, now that I see the Halloween party is taking place at MK on both the 9th and 15th, I may have to revise my plans to make the most of my short time in the parks.

I'll continue to keep updating this report as time counts down to September. I'm very much looking forward to the course and getting a little unexpected Disney time in this year!

How exciting!! I hope the rest of your family is able to make it down also!!

A few years ago I had a convention for work that was a mile or so off of Disney property. I was so excited! I only ended up
being able to go to AK & Epcot but I was thrilled to be able to that. Unexpected Disney time is always a great problem to have!!:)

Definitely a good problem to have! Plus I’m about to run out of my stash of Disney coffee. Good timing to load up again!

Woohoo! Hopefully the girls can make it down as well!! :joyfull:

I know we’ll try our best to see if it’ll work for everyone. Either way should be a cool experience!

Kelly here: our dilemma is that we get back from Hawaii on September 2 so it will be a fast turnover to leave the next week. The girls start school on September 4, so they only would miss school for the one holiday. It's a tough decision!!! If we don't go with Matt we would plan to do Disneyland in October. I know first world problems. Disney world or Disneyland tough call!

Sooooo excited for you! 🤗

This sounds incredible! 😍 I need some!!

Thanks very much! I'm pretty excited too.

I didn't think much of it when I stashed it in my bag before checking out last year but once I actually started using it early in 2018 it's made a big difference, especially with the increased amount of running I've been doing since the spring. When I'm back I'll have to look into buying a bigger portion as opposed to just the little room bottles.

Things are starting to feel real now. I just received confirmation from Disney that my room at the Grand is booked and my park pass was added to MDE profile! Only a few more weeks to go until I can start making some FP+ selections to maximize the limited time I'll have in the parks.

I also put in my request for DME and will be looking forward to receiving that package in the mail!

Since this is now all coming together and I'm putting some real detail in place, I've made adjustments to my original plans for park visits and meals.

I leave Edmonton in the wee hours of the morning on September 9th, with a few hour layover in Toronto. I'll arrive in Orlando around 1030 am, hop on the Magical Express and head to the Grand. From there I'll plan to head to Animal Kingdom (hopefully with FP+ for Flights of Passage) and spend the late morning, early afternoon there. After I explore AK, I'll make my way to EPCOT.

I wanted to go to MK that evening but with the Halloween party taking place I canceled my Plaza reservation and replaced it with dinner at Le Cellier at 700 pm. I'm sure I'll enjoy my meal and do as much of the park as I can accomplish in a short amount of time before heading back to the Grand for some much needed rest.

During the days we are in the conference I'm sure I'll spend an evening or two at Disney Springs. I have a few stores I really want to hit up and with any luck, I'll head to Delux for a quick meal one night.

My other park day will be September 14th and I'll be up bright and early to make it to MK for park open. I ended up snagging an early lunch reservation for 1100am at the Plaza which should be the perfect time to fuel up. I'll tour MK until the early afternoon before heading to spend the rest of my day at Hollywood Studios.

Seeing all the Toy Story Land stuff on Twitter today has me pumped to see it for myself. Hopefully I'll be able to get a FP+ for the Slinky Dog Coaster when my window opens! I'll enjoy dinner at Sci-Fi before getting ready to head back to the Grand for one more sleep before getting up super early to make it to MCO for my 700am flight home.

Definitely going to be some jam-packed days but I can't wait!

Well it doesn't look as if Kelly and the girls are joining me on this trip but we have decided on taking the whole crew back to Disneyland in October which is pretty exciting. We haven't been since the 60th anniversary and I'm really excited to see all of the changes that have been made since then.

We made it official today and will be enjoying a return visit from October 16-21. We've often said we wanted to keep an upcoming Disney trip a secret from the kids until the day we head to the airport and I think the goal is to do that with this trip. Not sure we can keep it silent for that long but we've got our fingers crossed!

You lucky dog!!

I was excited to see your Plaza reservation! I just had the fried green tomato sandwich and it was phenomenal! But then I saw you canceled it! I'm sure Le Cellier is a good substitution.

I was bummed to cancel the Plaza reservation but ended up getting lucky to find an early lunch reservation at the Plaza on September 14th! I haven’t tried the fried green tomato sandwich but I might have to when I’m there in a few months!

So now that I know this will be a solo trip and while I won't have a ton of free time, I will have most of my evenings free while the course is going on. Without access to the parks, I'm looking for some cool suggestions on things to do that I wouldn't necessarily be able to do with the girls with me.

I will definitely be spending some time at Disney Springs but that seems a tad obvious. If anyone has a little more obscure suggestion, say a must-have drink at a specific bar/lounge or a resort that has a must-see or often overlooked feature, I am open to any and all thoughts. It would be kind of cool to try something new or something that others enjoy during their visits to WDW.

Let me know what you've got and I'll see what I can work into the time I have to explore!

I hope we can too. We tend to let the cat out of the bag far too quickly whenever we try and keep things under wraps but it would be a really cool surprise if we manage to pull it off.

I can only imagine the reaction your kids would have had waking up to that news!

I will be there the same week!
It's a shame that Kelly and the kids can't join you, but DL in October! That will be awesome.

That's awesome! I'll keep an eye open for you and by all means, stop and say hello if we cross paths.

The DL trip should be a lot of fun! So much has changed since our last visit and I can't wait to get back. We should have the whole crew back in WDW in 2019 so it's looking like a lot of Disney in the next 12 months!
