Pre-Trip A completely unexpected, yet very exciting, "work" related pre-trip report!

I must preface this unexpected pre-trip report by stating I had no intention of visiting WDW in 2018 after we had such a great time in December 2017. Our plan has been to save up some of our DVC points and return in September 2019 when much of the park expansion work is completed. That said, earlier this year my mom participated in one of the Disney Institute programs, Disney's Approach to Quality Service, which was held over 4 days at the Yacht Club. She returned raving about the experience and how much she took away from the entire program. She made reference that if I ever had the chance to participate I should definitely jump on it.

Fast forward a few months and the topic of professional development came up around my office. I didn't think much of it until I remembered the DI courses so I started to do some digging. It seemed like most of my team here didn't have any programs they were interested in attending so I shot my shot and requested the same Approach to Quality Service Course. At first, it was not well received based on the total cost and the poor exchange rate here in Canada so I didn't put too much thought into actually going. But, after an application for a government grant was approved earlier this week to cover a significant portion of the program cost, I was given the green light to go ahead and book!

And so...I now have the good fortune of writing this completely unexpected, yet very exciting, "work" related pre-trip report!

WHEN: September 9 - 15, 2018

WHERE: Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa

WHO: At the moment this is a solo trip for me (Matt), though Kelly is definitely trying to find an angle to join with the kids. We'll see what we can come up with.

*post-haircut during the last trip. The only "solo" picture of me I could find!

While I am super excited to be staying at the Grand, I doubt I will get as lucky as we did when we checked in for a short one-night stay in December before moving to the Beach Club. Should you want to read more about the crazy cool night we spent in the Cape Coral Suite, here is a link to the last trip report. The course itself will be held at the Grand from September 10-13 and I am very much looking forward to getting the chance to explore the resort even more this trip.

The session days are pretty full from what I understand but they include some pretty memorable experiences including tours of some of the backstage areas and a bunch of other really cool features that I'm certainly looking forward to. Along with the course, each participant is provided with a 2-day park hopper pass so I've planned to arrive a day early and stay a day after (which could turn into more depending if Kelly, Ella and Lennon find their way down) to get a small taste of the parks. I'm happy I've been able to confirm this early enough to set up a few FP+ reservations when my window opens up.

I will be departing from Edmonton in the wee hours of the morning on September 9th, arriving in Orlando at 10:30am. I'm just awaiting my confirmation number for my resort booking to set up my DME to take me to the Grand. I plan on heading straight to the parks when I arrive to have a little fun before things get serious the next day.

And while this trip is unexpected, the WDW planner in me made sure to make a few dining reservations when all this discussion started just to be on the safe side. I figured I could always cancel them if things fell through. Since everything is now going ahead I'm very much looking forward to the following dining experiences...

September 9- Dinner at the Plaza
September 10 - Breakfast at Kona Cafe
September 13 - Dinner at the Edison
September 14 - Dinner at SciFi Dine-In Theatre

Regrettably, we didn't get to enjoy breakfast at Kona during the last trip and since it's a quick walk from the Grand I figured I couldn't pass it up this time around. I'm looking forward to a new experience at the Edison and heading back to a couple of old favourites in the Plaza and Sci-Fi.

Dinner on the first day of the course along with breakfast and lunch on the remaining days are included in the course so I'm sure I'll explore some different dining options during s few of the evenings I'll have to roam around. now knowing that things wrap up around 430 pm each day I may add another reservation at some point down the road. I will say, the pulled pork nachos from Cap'n Cooks and a Dole Whip at the Poly will definitely make for a nice dinner one of the nights.

September 14th will be another park day for me before returning home the next day. The plan now is to visit Animal Kingdom first thing the morning, do as much as I can there, then head to Hollywood Studios to get a look at Toy Story Land. However, now that I see the Halloween party is taking place at MK on both the 9th and 15th, I may have to revise my plans to make the most of my short time in the parks.

I'll continue to keep updating this report as time counts down to September. I'm very much looking forward to the course and getting a little unexpected Disney time in this year!

That's awesome! I'll keep an eye open for you and by all means, stop and say hello if we cross paths.

The DL trip should be a lot of fun! So much has changed since our last visit and I can't wait to get back. We should have the whole crew back in WDW in 2019 so it's looking like a lot of Disney in the next 12 months!

Will Do!
I would love to get to DL someday but that's a cross country plane ride, which means MONEY! haha

So I'm now 60 days out which means I had set the alarm to 455 am (local time) to fire up the app and make my FastPass+ selections. Turns out I didn't need the alarm as we didn't sleep much anyway. We were up often enough to correct Ella's blood glucose levels throughout the night that I was more than ready for the clock to strike 5 so I could start booking.

Sadly, as I started to enter my dates and park selection, the app pretty much dropped out. I was pretty frustrated as I jumped from the app to the browser to see if that might help but no dice. I took to Twitter to find out if there were issues as there have been some earlier this week with MDE. I was somewhat relieved to find the problems weren't just my own but MDE was not functioning properly.

After 20 minutes of constantly trying to refresh and wait for things to function again, I finally left the bedroom so Kelly could continue to sleep in peace. Eventually, around 525 things seemed to be back up and running, albeit somewhat slowly.

I started with my arrival date of September 9th and my visit to Animal Kingdom. Of course Flights of Passage was my top priority but I walked away empty handed as all FP+ times had already been accounted for. Bummer, but I guess I'll have to wait and see if I'll have the time to stand in line. I'd hate to pass it up but I know I have limited time to hang around in the queue.

With FoP out of the mix I was still able to secure some good options

No doubt I'll try and do as many other attractions as I can but at least I have these three to fall back on. Would love to hit up Dinosaur and Kali River if I get the chance so fingers crossed.

I'll then spend the rest of the afternoon/evening at EPCOT with a nice dinner planned at Le Cellier.

Next I switched over to September 14th, the day before I head back home. I plan to be at MK for the 800am EMH and get as much accomplished as I can before heading to DHS to take in the sights at the new Toy Story Land.

I had no issues securing what I was looking for here and I am very excited to see the new expansion while I'm there.

I'll for sure ride Midway Mania and the new Alien Swirling Saucers!

If I'm lucky I see that Fantasmic is playing at 830 that evening and I would love to watch if I can get through my meal at Sci Fi fast enough to partake.

Things are definitely coming together. Now I just have to get through the next 60 days!

So now that I know this will be a solo trip and while I won't have a ton of free time, I will have most of my evenings free while the course is going on. Without access to the parks, I'm looking for some cool suggestions on things to do that I wouldn't necessarily be able to do with the girls with me.

I will definitely be spending some time at Disney Springs but that seems a tad obvious. If anyone has a little more obscure suggestion, say a must-have drink at a specific bar/lounge or a resort that has a must-see or often overlooked feature, I am open to any and all thoughts. It would be kind of cool to try something new or something that others enjoy during their visits to WDW.

Let me know what you've got and I'll see what I can work into the time I have to explore!
Something I've wanted to do but haven't been able to yet is see YeHaa Bob at the Riverside Resort Bar. I've heard he's great.

I've seen him many, many times and he is excellent!! Seeing him is a must do every trip. Unfortunately, he was on vacation the whole time I was there last month.:(
His shows are Wednesdays-Saturday nights about 8:30. Try to get there about 7:30 or so to get a seat. The whole bar will normally fill up for his shows.

Thanks for the insight and advice! As it stands now I have no plans for Wednesday evening once the course wraps up for the day so that might be ideal.

And having just had a quick glance at the lounge menu, I would totally be up for a plate of wings and a beer or two while enjoying the show!

The wings are good & the loaded potato puffs are excellent!!

His show really is great. If you chose to see him you won't be disappointed in the least.

There were no FoP fast passes at the 60+ day mark for me either but one afternoon my mom asked me to check again and it was magically available! So if you have a free moment in the coming weeks hop on the app and try to modify. You never know!

Try the Abita Amber! It's one of our local and popular beers here in Louisiana and I heard they offer it there!

Keep checking for a Flight of Passage FP+! I've happened across several less than 30 days out. You should have even better luck with doing so being that you're only a party of 1! :)

I most certainly will! Nice to read about other people finding some openings as they keep checking back. I have some time to keep looking and hopefully I get lucky but if not that's ok. We'll just have to make sure we secure them for our 2019 visit!

Actually, this was one of the brews that jumped out at me when glancing at the menu! With your review, I'll definitely give it a try...thanks!

I keep checking for that elusive FoP FP+ to magically appear on September 9th but to this point, I remain unlucky. I still have a ways to go so maybe my luck will change if I stay diligent.

In the meantime, I've added another new element that I have yet to try and that's only because we've had limited time to do so. We joined the DVC last year and I've heard/read much about the Top of the World Lounge at Bay Lake Tower. We didn't get the chance to check it out during our trip last December but I figure I might as well give it a look one evening after the DI session wraps up.

I've added a reminder in MDE for the HalloWishes fireworks on September 11th. I think that might be an ideal time to make the short trip from the Grand to the Contemporary and enjoy a drink or two from the top of Bay Lake Tower while enjoying the fireworks.

That's awesome! It does sound like a pretty cool spot. I'm very much looking forward to seeing it for the first time.
