Pre-Trip A completely unexpected, yet very exciting, "work" related pre-trip report!

I must preface this unexpected pre-trip report by stating I had no intention of visiting WDW in 2018 after we had such a great time in December 2017. Our plan has been to save up some of our DVC points and return in September 2019 when much of the park expansion work is completed. That said, earlier this year my mom participated in one of the Disney Institute programs, Disney's Approach to Quality Service, which was held over 4 days at the Yacht Club. She returned raving about the experience and how much she took away from the entire program. She made reference that if I ever had the chance to participate I should definitely jump on it.

Fast forward a few months and the topic of professional development came up around my office. I didn't think much of it until I remembered the DI courses so I started to do some digging. It seemed like most of my team here didn't have any programs they were interested in attending so I shot my shot and requested the same Approach to Quality Service Course. At first, it was not well received based on the total cost and the poor exchange rate here in Canada so I didn't put too much thought into actually going. But, after an application for a government grant was approved earlier this week to cover a significant portion of the program cost, I was given the green light to go ahead and book!

And so...I now have the good fortune of writing this completely unexpected, yet very exciting, "work" related pre-trip report!

WHEN: September 9 - 15, 2018

WHERE: Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa

WHO: At the moment this is a solo trip for me (Matt), though Kelly is definitely trying to find an angle to join with the kids. We'll see what we can come up with.

*post-haircut during the last trip. The only "solo" picture of me I could find!

While I am super excited to be staying at the Grand, I doubt I will get as lucky as we did when we checked in for a short one-night stay in December before moving to the Beach Club. Should you want to read more about the crazy cool night we spent in the Cape Coral Suite, here is a link to the last trip report. The course itself will be held at the Grand from September 10-13 and I am very much looking forward to getting the chance to explore the resort even more this trip.

The session days are pretty full from what I understand but they include some pretty memorable experiences including tours of some of the backstage areas and a bunch of other really cool features that I'm certainly looking forward to. Along with the course, each participant is provided with a 2-day park hopper pass so I've planned to arrive a day early and stay a day after (which could turn into more depending if Kelly, Ella and Lennon find their way down) to get a small taste of the parks. I'm happy I've been able to confirm this early enough to set up a few FP+ reservations when my window opens up.

I will be departing from Edmonton in the wee hours of the morning on September 9th, arriving in Orlando at 10:30am. I'm just awaiting my confirmation number for my resort booking to set up my DME to take me to the Grand. I plan on heading straight to the parks when I arrive to have a little fun before things get serious the next day.

And while this trip is unexpected, the WDW planner in me made sure to make a few dining reservations when all this discussion started just to be on the safe side. I figured I could always cancel them if things fell through. Since everything is now going ahead I'm very much looking forward to the following dining experiences...

September 9- Dinner at the Plaza
September 10 - Breakfast at Kona Cafe
September 13 - Dinner at the Edison
September 14 - Dinner at SciFi Dine-In Theatre

Regrettably, we didn't get to enjoy breakfast at Kona during the last trip and since it's a quick walk from the Grand I figured I couldn't pass it up this time around. I'm looking forward to a new experience at the Edison and heading back to a couple of old favourites in the Plaza and Sci-Fi.

Dinner on the first day of the course along with breakfast and lunch on the remaining days are included in the course so I'm sure I'll explore some different dining options during s few of the evenings I'll have to roam around. now knowing that things wrap up around 430 pm each day I may add another reservation at some point down the road. I will say, the pulled pork nachos from Cap'n Cooks and a Dole Whip at the Poly will definitely make for a nice dinner one of the nights.

September 14th will be another park day for me before returning home the next day. The plan now is to visit Animal Kingdom first thing the morning, do as much as I can there, then head to Hollywood Studios to get a look at Toy Story Land. However, now that I see the Halloween party is taking place at MK on both the 9th and 15th, I may have to revise my plans to make the most of my short time in the parks.

I'll continue to keep updating this report as time counts down to September. I'm very much looking forward to the course and getting a little unexpected Disney time in this year!

Just seeing this pre-trip report now! How awesome you get a solo trip, and get to experience the Disney Institute. I might just have to look into this as an option for myself sometime. Yay for The Plaza ADR! I second @Zipitidoda...the fried green tomato sandwich is the best!

Thanks for reading along! I'm getting pretty excited as the trip is rapidly approaching. Even Kelly, who is bummed not to be going, is creating her list of stuff for me to pick up to give away as Christmas gifts.

I'm very much looking forward to the Disney Institute sessions. I've heard a lot of good things about DI so this should be fun.

Oh, and thanks for the fried green tomato recommendation. I'm thinking I might give it a try based on the feedback.

24 days to go. I've checked in to the hotel and continue to come up empty on my daily quest to secure a FoP FastPass. I did make one change and will now be dining at Mama Melrose on the evening of the 14th as opposed to Sci Fi. New experience at Mama Melrose and I was able to get a little earlier reservation which will allow me to get over to Fantasmic before heading back to the Grand.

Last thing I'm waiting on is the course update from DI which is supposed to be sent a few weeks before I arrive. Looking forward to seeing what they send along.

Kelly, the kids and I are off to Hawaii next Friday and we plan on making a stop at Aulani for breakfast and to explore the resort. I'll be sure to post some pictures of Disney in paradise!

Well, things have taken a CRAZY turn these last 12 hours with the news of Hurricane Lane heading towards Hawaii. With reports of the conditions and potential damage/fallout from the storm being thrown around, our flight to Honolulu on Friday was in question.

We decided that instead of risking our luck and trying to see what happens, we cancelled our trip to the islands earlier today and in place of what was supposed to be a relaxing beach vacation, we just booked a return trip to WDW! Of course, that's a small consideration in comparison to what the folks on the islands may have to deal with over the coming days and we certainly wish everyone there all the best as the storm draws closer.

While I'm pretty bummed not to be heading back to Hawaii, I think that disappointment will pass in the next day or two when it sinks in that we're heading back.

We will arrive at MCO around 1030 on Saturday morning and head to Port Orleans French Quarter which will be our home for the next week until we depart late Saturday afternoon. Not sure how this is going to go on such a last minute trip but over the next couple days we will try and plan as much as we can in advance and roll with the punches throughout the majority of the trip.

Not sure I'll be prepping a short notice pre-trip report, but will definitely have a post-trip report to work on when we get back.

I am in for A LOT of Disney over the next couple weeks!

Oh wow what a change! Sorry that you're not heading to Hawaii, but a last minute unexpected Disney trip sounds so exciting! It will be interesting to find out how it goes without the usual "necessary" planning. I think that could end up making it a more interesting and enjoyable trip! Look forward to hearing all about it. Have fun!

Sucks not to be going after looking forward to the trip for the last 8 months but this will turn out to be a lot of fun nonetheless. I think you're right, not having the excessive planning and flying by the seat of our pants (for the most part) might make things just that much more interesting. I'm overwhelmed at the moment but also starting to get excited.

Oh wow, that sucks about your trip to Hawaii. I have been looking into making plans to go and I was looking forward to your pictures and impressions of Aulani at your proposed stop there. But, you can't take the safety risk. At least going to Disney at this time of year will be plenty hot for trips to the pool (it looked like some of your pool time on your last trip in December were a little on the chilly side!). Have fun on your spontaneous WDW trip!!

Thanks John! At the moment both Kelly and I have never been so bummed to be going to Disney. I know our Hawaii blues will pass in the coming days and we’ll end up having a blast once we get there. We’re on the MDE app non stop right now trying to line up any reservations we can muster.

Stay tuned!

UGH! Sorry about your trip cancellation, but how exciting to replace it with a Disney visit! A friend of mine at work just had to cancel her trip to Montana because of the wildfires. Hopefully you can find some last minute ADRs and good FPs. Can't wait to hear how the short notice trip turns out! :)

I'm starting to get over the fact we had to change plans and now I'm looking forward to the trip. I'm sure by tomorrow I'll be all in! We spent a bunch of time last night planning our days and trying to secure ADRs. Obviously didn't get exactly what we would normally want to book but we did book the following restaurants

Aug 25 - Dinner at Whispering Canyon
Aug 26 - Dinner at Le Cellier
Aug 27 - Dinner at Chef Art Smith
Aug 28 - Lunch at the Plaza
Aug 30 - Dinner at 50's
Sept 1 - Breakfast at Chef Mickey's

We put in a reservation request through Touring Plans for dinner at 'Ohana on Aug 29th so hopefully we might get lucky.

Aside from our crazy last minute change of plans, I also received an update from the Disney Institute for my solo trip the week after we get back from our upcoming visit.

Schedule looks like there is going to be some really cool experiences but still allow for some time to explore after the session wrap. I'm really looking forward to both of these trips but maybe not as excited for the flights to and from on consecutive weekends!

And wouldn't you know it? Moments after typing this message I was notified a reservation at 'Ohana opened up on the 29th so we can officially add that to the list! Things are actually shaping up pretty nicely for such a short amount of time to plan.

Sorry that your Hawaii vacation got cancelled. But Hooray for a spontaneous trip to WDW. You got some great ADRs for booking so last minute. Fingers crossed you have some good luck with FP+. Looking forward to reading about both trips. I love Mama Melrose! Hope you enjoy it!

Thanks very much. I’m keeping tabs on what’s going on in Hawaii right now, we definitely made the right decision. Hope everyone there stays safe.

I was pretty surprised we ended up with what we did. There are still some decent FP+ available too. This trip is really coming together!

So sorry you've had to change your plans! I've been following what's going on and you are right, it sounds like it was the right decision, but a bummer indeed! Looks like you have scored some great ADR though! I'm looking forward to hearing about your spontaneous trip!

It’s pretty scary seeing what’s going on in Hawaii right now. We’re pretty lucky not to have to be going through it.

We’re all pretty fired up to get there now, even if we are flying all night! Looking forward to getting to the airport later today!
