Apologies if I've posted this in the wrong place....

I'm shopping for my first DSLR and I'm trying to decide between a Nikon D3100 and the Canon T2i. For all of you who take/post some of the amazing photos on the boards...opinions?

Thanks!

My friend Sarah has the Nikon model you're wanting and it is a truly AMAZING camera. She has been able to capture some of the most beautiful shots, and she said the settings are really easy to use on it.
I don't know anyone personally with that Canon model but I have looked at it and am drooling over it... However, I think my next buy is going to be an "in-between" camera, like this one... My kids are going to be wanting to run everywhere; I'm not gonna have time to screw different lens' on the camera. LOL

The reviews on both seem to be pretty good. Good luck deciding which one to get!

I've used the Nikon D40x and know several people that have the new Nikon D5000. The beauty of any of the Nikon DSLRs is you can be as simple or as intricate as you want. The point and shoot ability is fantastic, but if you're into photography it doesn't get in the way. I have no experience with the Canon. I'm sure that you won't go wrong with either one.

Personally, I was planning on getting a D5000, but opted for something smaller. I already have enough stuff to carry around the parks.

Cheers,
Indy

Sony Alpha A33/A55

I've been looking at the new Sony Alpha A33 and A55 DSLR cameras. The have 1080p video as well as a whole host of other options. The camera will autofocus itself because it has translucent mirrors. Check them out at Sonys website.

Also, Nikon just came out with the D5100 DSLR with an 18-105mm lens standard. Same 1080p video and tons of cool features.

Go to www.pricegrabber.com for the best online pricing. I usually buy at www.buydig.com.

Funny that you mentioned that - my local camera shop just mentioned yesterday that they were getting a brand new Nikon model in this week, so I was planning on going in to check it out. Thanks for the heads up...I'll check it out online!

You really can't go wrong either way. It's kind of a brand loyalty thing - the only true difference will be the forums you frequent and the friends that can help you out! :) It's a 'Ford vs. Chevy' type argument.

If you get really into it (as in, actually take it off of auto - something I rarely do! :D) you'll find that the real expense (and joy of photography) is in the lenses.

I have a canon - the rebel xsi and I love love love mine! I do want to get a better lens before our next trip b/c the one that comes standard, it doesn't zoom enough for my liking. But that is an easy fix. I love how easy it is to use and it is not too heavy so I don't feel that it is weighing me down after carrying it around all day. I'm really happy with the canon.

I'm actually deciding between those two models myself. I've come to the conclusion that the Canon T2i is the way to go for a few reasons:

1. The Canon does 3-shot auto exposure bracketing to allow for HDR shots whereas the Nikon does not. That may not be a dealbreaker for a lot of people as not everyone likes HDR but I'm interested in it myself.

2. I will be doing a lot of HD video and while the Nikon does continuous video autofocus, the noise that it produces ruins the videos.

3. The Canon has an external mic jack -- which I may or may not be using but I'd like to have the option.

I just got the same camera. I have only had about a month..have not gotten to print anything yet but just viewing on the screen and on the computer the quility is much better than the P&S I had. DH could not beleive the difference..and did not want me spend the money..but i talked him into it and boy is he glad!! Iam also thinking of a additional lense. I was told/suggested on these boards to get a 50mm!!

Thanks for all the feedback! My local shop is supposed to have the new Nikon D5100 in stock in the next few days, so I'm going to wait and check that out, but I'm leaning that direction!

Now....I'll just have to figure out how to use it! :ROFLOL:

Not sure about the 5100, but I know the 3100 has a "guide" mode built in that teaches you how to do a lot of different types of shots :)

My personal opinion..for a starter..the D5100 is the way to go. I have a D3100 and love it, dont get me wrong, but the features of the 5100 are pretty fantastic. A better sensor, Auto HDR (if you are into that sort of thing), better video, and a swivel screen. If you already own a D3100 id say save up a few hundred more and just get the D7000 (same sensor as the D5100 but more focus points and a much better build quality).

Good to know! This will be my first DSLR purchase, so I don't want to get something TOO far over my head. However, if I'm going to spend that much money, I might as well get something that I can grow into and will last. Once I started reading about the 5100, I started leaning that way. Anxious for it to arrive at the local shop so I can check it out and get moving on this!

Jumped the gun today and won a vintage Mickey camera strap on eBay...so now I just need something to hang off the end of the strap! :ROFLOL:

Glad to see there are still smart people in the world! Another benefit to purchasing a higher end model, is that they tend to hold their value a little better than the entry level ones do. So, if you end up not liking the camera, don't use it often, etc. you can still get a pretty good resale out of it.

Welcome to the Mickey Strap Club:wave:, out of curiosity, which strap did you get?
