Tuesday 6th September.
Alesund.
This morning we docked at the town of Alesund right up against the Quay. Breakfast was Cabanas again and we got ashore around 10:45 am. We had looked at the excursions for this port but hadn't been wowed by any of them and decided to take a walk through the town by ourselves as it was close to the boat.
It was a pretty little town area with an inlet running through the middle of it.

We were out for a good few hours meandering through the town up and around the waterway and further afield. We stopped to try a local drink part way through.

Before we headed back we stopped at a bakery for a coffee and a roll. We had visited the original site of this place on a previous cruise and were quite confident that it would be good. We weren't disappointed.

First stop , Jersey

Several members of my family (including me) went to Jersey this year from US. A bucket list trip. Our Mom’s family (one branch) has been in Jersey over 500 years. We had a great time and loved it although driving on the left on what they call “roads” (more like tiny lanes) was a challenge. It was lovely though, would go back in a heartbeat. Enjoying your TR

Wednesday 7th September.
Nordfjordied.
Today was an early start as our tour group was meeting at 07:45. We were up and ready and Cabana'd with plenty of time to report to the Walt Disney Theatre. Once we got ashore we boarded the bus for our trip to lake Loen and the Kdjendall Glacier. WE had been informed ahead of time that the walk to the glacier had been taken off the excursion but we decided to stick with the tour.
We travelled away from the fjord and along the shores of Hornindalsvatnet. This is the deepest lake in Norway and Europe. It reaches a depth of 514 feet. The surface of the lake is only 53 m above sea level so the majority of the lake is well below sea level but it is still 100% fresh water. After traversing some "interesting" roads (highways are 1 lane in each direction) we arrived at a very misty shoreline and boarded the riverboat.

The lake is fed by 2 main glaciers. Jostedalsbreen and Tinderfjellbreen. It is approximately 11km long and at points it is only 6ft deep.
There have been two incidents where parts of the surrounding mountains have collapsed into the lake.
In 1905 35,000 cubic meters of rock fell into the lake causing 3 Tsunamis reaching 133ft in height. These took the lives of 61 people living in the area. A subsequent survey concluded that this was a one off event and people would be ok living back in the area.
Then in 1936 1,000,000 cubic meters of rock fell in the lake causing another 3 Tsunamis with the highest reaching 74 meters high. Unfortunately another 74 lives were lost. The depth of the lake has also lowered due to the amount of rock that has entered it in these two occurrences. Our boat guide did also say there had been a hurricane that had swept through the area but no one was lost in that event.

we sailed all the way to the far side of the lake watching the mist burn away into a glorious day . Once we reached the other end , passing through a narrow channel created by the second "incident" we arrived at a small mountain chalet where we were served traditional waffles and jam/sour cream with coffee. It was all fantastic and we purchased a couple of the local jams to bring home. We then had some time to explore the area and take pictures.
All too soon we re boarded the boat for the return leg. We decided to occupy the back of the boat again and the views were just as majestic as the other direction. We got back on the coach for the journey back down the mountains to the port. As there was extra time we took a short detour and stopped in the town of Strynn. We had a short time to wander and shop here.

We then headed back to the port and had a wander around before getting back on board.

We were lucky enough to have a floating gangplank which is cool. Once onboard we grabbed a couple of sandwiches from Daisy's Delights for lunch and spent the afternoon relaxing and enjoying the view from our verandah.
