Today was a coach tour to a variety of different places. Some outstanding. Some not so much.
We boarded the coach just off the ship then took a short ride to the Hardanger nature centre In the blurb on the DCL website we thought this would be a fairly large place and looked like it was set in the mountains.
Nope.
when we arrived it was maybe 10 minutes out of town and consisted of two buildings. The nature centre and a gift shop / cafe.
We were "herded"into the centre first to watch a "short" film by a renowned Norwegian director. We left the cinema area after 10 minutes of the film as it seemed strange to be going to Norway to see a film about the nature of Norway. I would much rather see it with my own eyes. The film had also taken a rather "circle of life " turn for the worse ..
Considering we only had an hour at this stop it seemed like an awful long film to show ( It ran for 20 minutes). We didn't bother with the rest of the centre as we were kind of put off the whole thing and headed over the road to the gift shop and to see the views of Actual Norway.

Next stop was the Sysen Damn high up in the mountains. It is a spectacular feat of engineering . The glacier on the far side was used for filming in The Empire Strikes Back. It may have been somewhat chilly up here but as we were only off the coach for 10-15 minutes I didn't bother with a jumper and made everyone feel extremely cold just in shorts and a T-shirt. What can I say. I come from a hardy background. Along the route up to the damn wooden poles started to appear on either side of the road the higher we went. Apparently they are for finding the road after snowfall in the winter and are roughly 10ft high . Alas there was no snow today :(.

Next stop was the Voringfoss waterfall. This spectacular waterfall drops 597ft into the Malden valley below. The views are spectacular and there is a walkway that crosses over the falls which , given time , would have been a fantastic viewpoint. Alas we were again short on time here so didn't get that opportunity.

Fireweed which is very common up in the mountains.

Back on board the coach we headed back down the mountain to the ship.
Overall this was a good tour . We would have preferred to drop the nature centre and spend more time at the other two stops and we made sure to tell guest services so. It was the first time that DCL has visited this port so all feedback was greatly appreciated.
After a sandwich from Daisy's Delights I decided to head back off the ship for a few hours as the sail away time wasn't until 8pm and I wanted the chance to explore the small town some more. Mrs Raccoon decided against this and spent some time enjoying the sunshine from the veranda.
There were a lot of statues dotted around and a line of trees that had knitted patterns adorning their trunks. The ship was docked so close to the shore it seemed almost an optical illusion that it was berthed in shallow water. The drop off from the pier must be incredible.
