5 Days at Disney World, 12 Days to Plan, 3 Resorts and 1 Broken Leg

When – Saturday November 17th- Thursday, November 22, 2012

Where – Animal Kingdom Lodge, Old Key West and Saratoga Springs

Who – Just the 4 of us this time! Myself, Stephen my hubby, Chase 17 and Ally 15. Since it was just the four of us, I somehow neglected to get a single photo of us together! I think there are only three of them with myself even in them! So here we are in parts.

Why – Well because we wanted to of course. :D But why Thanksgiving week, one of the most crowded weeks there is? Well there were several reasons. For one, it’s tough to find a time to go these days that works for all 4 of us. I can go anytime, of course, and I do! :) But the teenagers and hard working hubby are harder. We had rooms booked for President’s Day weekend, but the kids had a lot of conflicts. Also, we had nothing to do for Thanksgiving. About 12 days before we left, I got an airfare alert for $176 flights to Orlando.

So what do you do when you don’t have anything to do for Thanksgiving and you can fly to Orlando cheaply? You go visit the mouse of course!! We go enough that the crowds don’t bother us much, so it seemed like the perfect solution.

The kids were more than game, and Stephen cleared it with his work. We bought the tickets and set to work trying to find somewhere we could use our DVC points and use about the same amount of points as we had planned to use in February. As expected, we didn’t have a lot of options, but that was no biggie either. Just happy to be going!

We ended up with the first night at Kidani in a savannah view studio. The next two nights were, get this, in a grand villa (yes for four of us :p ) at Old Key West, then two nights in a studio at Saratoga Springs. This would be an adventure!

Of course that was just the beginning. About 9 days before we left Ally was at basketball tryouts and rolled her ankle. Her ankle was huge when I picked her up, but she’d done something similar at volleyball tryouts and it was just sprained then. I assumed that was the case here, but we went to the doc just in case. When he told us there was a fracture, I was shocked! My first thoughts were sadness that she probably wouldn’t make varsity since she only went to one day of tryouts, and my second thought was how sad her volleyball coach was going to be when we told her that Ally wouldn’t be at the last volleyball tournament of the season in two days. It didn’t hit me until we were in the car going home that we were going to Disney in 9 days.

I screamed – “Oh no!! We’re going to Disney World!!” That may have been the first time I’ve used “Oh no” and “we’re going to Disney” in the same sentence. Ally immediately started clamoring for an electric scooter which seemed like a bad idea for too many reasons to list here. :)

She had a walking cast, but there was no way she was up for the amount of walking that Disney entails, so we were looking at our first trip to Disney with a GAC card and a wheel chair! This should be an experience.

Oh, and if you were wondering, Ally did make varsity. All five foot zero of her. And she’s a freshman! She’s out for a few weeks, but thankfully basketball season is long. Go Ally, go Ally…go go go Ally…:D

Haha! Yes we did!

That is an excellent tradition. Stephen will say that needs to be our new tradition. :)

Tuesday – November 20th –
Big shocker! We slept in! Today we were checking out and moving over to Saratoga Springs! We packed and returned the wheel chair.

Before we left, it was a nightmare trying to keep Ally’s cast dry while bathing. She had to just stick her leg out of the tub. I ordered this online and it came a couple of days before we left. A. Maz. Ing. It was about $25 and worth every penny.

We left around 10:30 I think. Goodbye grand villa! We loved you! I took a few last pictures from our room:

We didn’t have a wheelchair yet, so Ally had to hoof it for a little while.

ThanksgivingDisney2043.jpg

We stopped at our favorite store- D Street! I’m in love with this shirt:

When we could see Disney Quest we saw the biggest line we have ever seen. Several hundred high school age kids. We almost passed on Disney Quest when I noticed they weren’t actually in line yet and people were bypassing them and going in. We decided to go in for a little while and if it got crazy we would leave.

It actually never got too bad!

Love Pac-man!!

People playing games that we can’t see always amuse me:

ThanksgivingDisney2085.jpg

We fully enjoyed Wreck it Ralph when we saw it:

These Fix-it-Felix games completely confused me. According to Wiki (which is never wrong) it’s a game created for Wreck it Ralph. But these games looked quite old. Did they go to a lot of work aging them? Does anyone know?

We didn’t do Pirates this time, but it's one of my favorites:

After we had our fill of Disney Quest, we stopped at the Candy Cauldron.

We stopped at D-Street to make some purchases. Ally told Stephen he may want to wait outside while we shopped.

Smart girl, that one.

We caught the boat to Saratoga Springs.

We checked in, and picked up a wheelchair. I asked at check in if any one bedrooms had opened up but she said no, and in fact they were at 100% occupancy.

The kids opened their vinylmations while we checked in.

We then headed off to Animal Kingdom. Elevator picture ala @HollyBelle!

Chase strongly dislikes Animal Kingdom and didn’t want to go. So we decided to get on the first bus. And where was the first bus to?

Sunny bus!

I’m back! If you’re still reading, thank you for sticking with me!

We’re here! Is it just me, or are there a lot of people here?

ThanksgivingDisney1b096149.jpg

Our first destination? Fantasyland of course! Woo hoo! It was open!

But first we walked through this amazing sight:

Great TR & pics. Trying to come into my own style shooting, especially @ WDW. Just had my first foray with a prime lens & dark rides. Learned that I have a lot to learn...

Love seeing the castle "blinged" out like that!! Was def awesome to see in person when there last week.

Thank you, ejsanta! Those prime lenses are the best for dark rides. I need a wider one again. My bil broke my 50 and now all I have is an 85 which I really only use for portrait shooting.

We did Dinosaur! and then walked up the path by Nemo to Everest. We were salmon swimming upstream at that point. It was insane how many people were walking the other direction.

We rode Everest next.

Then we started over towards the Safari, but we were distracted by Flights of Wonder and stopped in for a show. It’s always a good show, we were glad we stopped.

We decided dinner tonight would be at Beaches and Cream so we took a bus to Beach Club.

Shockingly, there was no line at Beaches and Cream and we went right in!

Afterwards, Ally got chocolate ice cream and the rest of us split a sundae. Ally did her “Not Impressed” face while we waited.

This was heavenly:

My husband, who loves ice cream so much he would marry it if he could, fell in love with Beaches and Cream and was a little indignant he had never been there before!

After filling our bellies we walked through Epcot to the front. Well some of us walked, some of us were pushed.

I was trying to snap some pictures without slowing everyone down.

The kids had tentative plans to meet up with some friends from home tonight, but that fell through, so we decided it would be the perfect night to try out the Top of the World Lounge at Bay Lake! We went back to the room for a little while and put on some warm clothes first.

I was worried it would be full, so we left fairly early. We caught the bus to MK and then walked (or wheeled) over to BLT. Castle in the distance!

ThanksgivingDisney2288.jpg

BLT toes!

ThanksgivingDisney2293.jpg

We checked out the view first and then went into the lounge and got a table.

There was a film crew outside, but nothing happening yet. We ordered some cokes and pretzel bites and while we were waiting for our food I went back outside. That’s when Stephen noticed the teleprompter.

The teleprompter had lines for “Samantha”.

What?!! Was Samantha Brown coming?!!

We asked our waitress who said yes, she had been there the night before too. She said Samantha was 7 months pregnant and easy to spot.

SAMANTHA BROWN!!! I loooove her!! :D

When the film crew started moving, I left my coke and yummy warm pretzel bites that we had ordered and ran right back out to the balcony. I was afraid if I got too close they would notice me and ask me to leave, so I stayed back. But there she is!

My dear sweet husband knew I was trying to get “Toes with Samantha Brown” for my blog, so he came over and stuck his leg in one of my pictures.

ThanksgivingDisney2377.jpg

When the fireworks, which were beautiful and BLT was a great place to watch them from, ended, we walked to the elevators. I noticed some people asking for pictures with Samantha, but I just didn’t want to bother her. I just smiled when she walked by us. We were about to be in the same elevator as her, but we decided we looked like crazy stalkers :D , so we waited around the corner until her elevator was gone.

We walked back over to Magic Kingdom and waited through several busses again. We didn’t care though. Such a fun night!

Hey, this works out for both of them!

Love those LED light panels they used to light her ... we just ordered four of them for the studio. I think it's hilarious they had to put her up on apple boxes for the shot. Great snag Tammy. :D
