Speaking of defeat....

*convinces Bob Saget that he needs to be on horseback in the water polo event....laughs (maniacally) with the crowd when he shows up on his steed*

Have you ever played water polo? It's HARD!

The same with fencing and competitive badminton ( a whole different animal than playing in your backyard). They look easy, but require a lot of strength and stamina. I fenced a little bit as a rank amateur way back when, and my legs would be quivering after a match. We were required to run as training.

The same with rowing. It looks smooth and easy from shore, but they are pushing themselves to the point of exhaustion. The training is grueling, especially the ERG.

Rowing is different. Anyone that has ever done that or a row machine know that takes a great deal of strength and stamina.

All of these events obviously require tremendous strength and/or stamina. I don't deny that. I just don't feel as though some are real sports.

I will also agree to disagree. IMO, fencing is as much as a sport as tennis (as is badminton) or, wait for it....basketball. Just one on one instead of a team effort. It requires agility, strength, speedy footwork, and skill, and being able to read an opponent's body language. And if you blow it you have no one else to blame.

Again, it's very hard to know everything that goes into a sport until you are closely involved in some way, and sometimes only if you have personally participated.

But again, just my opinion. ;)

I agree. At the end of the day, these are all hard-working competitors and should be seen as such, regardless of what one considers to be a "sport."

I know that they are each going for their individual goals but they are all part of TEAM USA. NBC, stop trying to drive wedges and create personal drama. Now they are doing the same thing to women's gymnastics. "As does it feel to beat out the current world champ (you can see Jordyn Wieber the current champ in tears 2 feet behind the girl) and advance to the final?" "Before we interview Jordyn Wieber we will give her time to collect her thoughts." Let's shove the camera in her face. (The heat from the camera lights should help dry her mascara)

This was especially upsetting. These are young girls who have essentially given up their childhood to train for this - Wieber is 17 and has literally spent her whole life preparing to compete for the Olympic all-around. Anyone with a heart can see why she would be devastated. Shoving a camera in her face is disturbing.

That was out of left field. It comment's like that make me think you use to be a CIA agent or Bond girl.

starring
Daniel Craig and The Mom
in
Declining by Degrees
working title
The Mom: (With back turned say's) "So I think you will see my point Mr. Bond."

The Mom: (Turns to face Bond and aggressively shoves foil into his chest)

Bond: (With hands raised) "I think I already have."

My most recent girlfriend got me into Dressage big time. That is beyond a ton of hard work with hours and hours of practice put in with the horse and bonding it with it. Communicating with a tamed large animal with such gentle body language and the horse responding to it with grace is an amazing feat to accomplish. My top event to watch for this Olympics! The muscles required to perform in Dressage at this level, just wow.

NBC had a world class mess up earlier today - they ran a promo for their super heartwarming reunion between Missy Franklin and her parents after she won her first ever Olympic Gold medal - tomorrow on the Today show. Only problem? They ran said promo in the commercial break just BEFORE they televised the race where she won the gold. Idiots.

NBC horrid commentary people (they were bashing Franklin at the start and then they fall in love with her). But we already knew she was going to win gold because everything is tape delay. I would like to watch other sports too beside swimming, gymnastics and volleyball. Like on the weekend...I watched crew, soccer and cycling. Why can't they show more of that and others during the later hours?

We need a face palm smiley.
