Nibs..participation is way up in this contest so you're doing something right and you know I'm with ya 100%. The competitive nature adds a fun edge to it but people shouldn't take it so seriously. Winning with 20% of the vote isn't an overwhelming approval of a photo especially if one considers that 80% voted for someone else. And I don't think anyone should hold their breath waiting to be nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

I'll support whatever you decide or if you decide to do nothing.

(Thinking out loud) Adding another level of difficulty (editing) may discourage some people from participating. Something is troubling a few of the participants and it may have to do with the way the voting is conducted. The 'technically best' photo very seldom wins and I think that may be bothering some of the more experienced photographers.

Perhaps we need a panel of impartial, photo-astute members who can judge and choose the best 5 photos and let the rest of us vote on those....
I completely agree with the bold part because I very much think that is what is bothering a few people.

And what bothers me is that anyone even cares who wins!

If it wasn't a contest anymore, then it would still give everyone the ego trip they want by being able to show off their favorite photos and have people compliment them, without the disappointment of losing.

The votes don't mean anything anyway because everyone's voting based on their own personal criteria.

I don't think it's worth all the drama just so people can have their name written on a list. It's silly. The fun part of the contest is seeing all the cool pics everyone has, not seeing the winner's list. ;)

Here's my opinion about what the subjects should be:

I would like to do some Disney Cruise contests. Maybe some topics could be:
  • Character Breakfasts (on the boat)
  • In the restaurants
  • Pictures of the ship from land at a port of call
  • Castaway Cay
  • Around the boat
I just think more Cruise contests would be fun.

Now, I haven't participated in any contests as of yet, but I plan to start soon.

You're just in it for the "oohs" and "ahhs" then?

 LMAO....You reminded me of Steve Martin in "The Jerk" when he saw his name in the phonebook and he yells....

"I'm Somebody Now!"

(Being on that list is second in importance only to the POST COUNT. And we all know what a high post count will buy ya!) :lookaroun

Topic Ideas:
1.Merchandise (they always have such cute displays!)
2.Inside the hotel room
3.Non-park/resort picture- A picture taken outside of the 47 sq miles of WDW. Possibly a billboard on I-4, exit sign, something from your personal collection at home, a kid dressed up as a Disney character on Halloween, etc
4.I second the food idea
5.I also second the sunrise/set picture contest
6.Enter a picture taken by a family member week (not one taken by the member on these boards) For once we can be in the pic!
7.1979-1989--Pictures must have been taken in that decade. (And yes, as a five year old in 1989, I did own my own camera, and took lots of pics!) These would have to be scanned in obviously
8.Humor-a pic depicting something funny. A short story might have to be involved here
10. Country specific contests for the Countries in WS
11. Resturants-something taken inside the resturant
12. Mr. Potato Head--your best creation of the Disney edition PH....c'mon, you know you've all played with him in DTD
13.The Wonderful Wedgies of Walt Disney World contest--do you realize how many people walk around with a massive wedgie? Capture it!
(just kidding....seeing if your paying attention here!)
14.I also second the light fixture contest...believe it or not, I always take pictures of the light fixtures in Disney!

However, I don't agree with so many "special event's" pictures, maybe one or two for the bigger events (F&G fest and F&W fest) but not the smaller ones (star wars, soap opera, MNSSHP, etc) I just don't think that you'd get as many participants in such a narrowly themed contest.

I just wanted to step in and give a big GOOD JOB to Nibbs. You do a great job with these contests girly, and you have far more patience with those not deserving than I ever would. :) I for one think your contests are great just the way you have them set up! I enjoy choosing my favorite... based on nothing more than whatever catches my eye that day. Thanks Nibbs!!!! Thank you for devoting what little free time you get, to run these things and put up with the nonsense of a few!!! You're a gem girly and on the whole... we all appreciate you and your efforts tremendously!!!

:sohappy: Just thought I'd let you know! ;)

Good lord.

I really don't appreciate how some have you have tried to paint this conversation as an attack on NibblesandBits. As one of the ones I presume you are calling "not deserving" I can say that I have seen NO evidence of personal attacks (except your comment). All I see is some people suggesting a change to rules to push the envelope a bit. Most of you that have spoken have said loud and clear that you're happy to keep the status quo in place. Fine. So be it.

I'll say it again for clarity, however...no one attacked NibblesandBits.

And again in case you missed it....no one attacked NibblesandBits.

Third time's a charm....no one attacked NibblesandBits.

Clear?

A friend of mine sent me this quote which I see as the spirit as to why this thread was started to begin with....

"I happen to be kind of an inquisitive guy and when I see things I don't like, I start thinking, why do they have to be like this and how can I improve them?" --Walt Disney

Maybe I'm completely off base here, but it seems to me that the biggest issue of all is not really the whole image editing thing, but more the fact that it's a contest at all!

No one can decide on what's fair, no one can even decide on WHY you should vote for a particular photo. But everyone seems to agree that they like looking at all of the photos.

So why not just get rid of the CONTEST aspect and just have it be a "photo theme of the week" kinda thing where everyone can posts whatever pics they want, edited in whatever ways they want.

Then everyone wins.

But then again, I may be the only one with this opinion.

This is not the third grade, we can have a contest.

We don't have to pamper everybody's ego by not allowing a winner.

Excellent suggestion.
NOOOOOOOOOooooooo

Or maybe we could forget this thread ever happened.

OK

----

Once again I say, if you don't like this contest....start your own!

I think you need to take a deep breath, my friend. You edited your first post to Nibbles cuz YOU thought it sounded like an attack on her. If YOU thought that, maybe you need to cut some slack for others who may have thought the same thing. Some of your comments project a 'to hell with them' attitude that may have rubbed people the wrong way no matter how valid.

Nibbles inherited these rules but has always been open to new ideas that do not compromise the original intent and spirit of the contest. When someone starts off a post telling her that her thought process is "misguided," I suggest that they open themselves up to personal criticism. There is nothing wrong with the notion of keeping the contest as simple as possible so as to encourage as many members as possible to participate. The fact that the contest can never be 100% fair for everyone or that someone always has an advantage, is a simplistic lesson in life that can be applied to almost anything. It does not give license to anyone to change the rules to accommodate the disgruntled few and further erode the effort to keep the contest as equitable as possible. There may be good ideas of making the contest fairer and more interesting but, we may never hear them cuz, as usual, the conversation is derailed into argument.

One of the pleasant attractions of this contest is that those with photos taken with an Instamatic can easily get more votes for their picture than someone with an expensive SLR. If this prospect bothers anyone or they feel the contest is too juvenile for their expertise, maybe they need to reevaluate their participation and let their mind be troubled no longer.

That's all I'm gonna ever say about this. :sohappy:

Correct. Which is why I edited as I did. I guess people can't be bothered to read entire posts.

Look, what frustrates me here is that people are not taking the time or extending the courtesy to think about what's being proffered. Do you know in all of these posts not one person asked for clarification on what I was talking about? Not one. And it was clear by all of the other posts that people clearly didn't understand (and still don't by the way). Fine...whatever. All I was trying to do was be legit in some minor photo ajusting. "Editing" that is already taking place anyway.

Many of you have accused me (or others) of wanting to stack the deck to "win" these contests when in reality it's just the opposite. I was trying to level the playing field rather than it favoring those that can do it and not get caught because the rest of you don't know. I don't need to win these contests to validate my photo skills. I know where I'm at. Somedays I'm good somedays I'm lousy. Some of you are better photographers (MKT - love your stuff) some of you are worse. So what.

The final straw for me though was being accused of attacking someone when I clearly stated that I wasn't (as you noted). I was debating rules, not people.

Lastly, many of you have said "if you don't like it then start your own contest". Well, a couple of us tried to do that but were basically told "no". In private of course. In fact, another member posted an article about starting a *non-profit* website to do just that (since it wasn't allowed here) and it was censored/deleted without so much as a "sorry...but".

If the forum gods decide to let me give a link to the site I certainly will. We'd even give a nice little link back to this site with a big "thanks" as we did with another disney message board (I'm assuming I can't say the name).

If anyone's interested, PM me. (Mods: If that's not allowed please just censor that sentence and not my entire post).

-M

PS: "Misguided" is not an insult by the way. It IS misguided to believe you can make a contest like this "fair for everyone and all-inclusive".

I find it hard to believe that a properly conducted contest, named efficiently enough to differentiate it from the Photography Contests, would be summarily dismissed and deleted by the moderators.

I've not seen the moderators delete ANOTHER Survival Game why would they delete another Contest? :veryconfu

If I'm wrong, somebody please explain it to me.

Hey, you changed your signature!
Ok, back on topic, maybe you could do certain lands or places at night. Sorry if that has already be suggested!
