2007 Photography Contest Ideas

If you're going to say that people who edit their photos have an advantage over those who don't know how, then you might as well say that people with really nice/professional cameras have an advantage over those with cheap/disposable cameras. And this is clearly not the case, since, like i said earlier, most people seem to vote for what is in the picture rather than the quality of the picture itself. So, go ahead, let people edit/clean up their photos. In the end, it doesn't matter around here. If this were an actual contest based on just real good photography, it would be different.
If this were a contest based on just real good photography, a lot of us would be screwed.

But I guess it wouldn't matter to a lot of you because the "pros" would win each time since they take better pictures anyway.

What's hilarious is all this drama for a contest that is supposed to be for fun and has no prizes

Wow, So much actual arguing over something I always found and still find fun. Maybe we should just keep the rules the same as they always have been for the sake of not having a controversy about it.

Maybe we could have two contests, with the same subject, ect. but one allows for alterations and one does not?
If you want to submit stuff with alterations, you can submit it to the Creative Media Contest.

We finally have a winner.

I thought that this was about new subject matters, NOT about changing the whole contest parameters.

Lets put this thread back on track.

If you guys want a new contest, then START one.......

And that's what I'm afraid of. If we allow "enhancing" or "correcting" images...you are going to alienate those who have no clue how to do it.

Right now...these contests are the fairest I can make them. And that's all I want. For these contests to be fair. I don't want to give anybody the upperhand.

With all due respect nibblesandbits, this is a misguided notion. You'll never achieve absolute equity. Someone always has it better or easier. Don't the folks who live in Orlando and/or have "better" cameras already have the "upper hand" over those who only get to WDW once every couple of years with their Kodak disposables?

I thought the point of this photography contest was to celebrate the best images that honor the artistry and grandness of the place we all know and love. We've obviously got some really great photographers on this board...why hold them back? For the sake of those folks who do not know how to fine-tune their photographs? Has it occured to anyone that maybe people would learn a little more about photography that might help them take better family pictures during their next vacation? No, I guess it's easier to point, click, upload and wonder why our pictures don't look as nice as the ones they show in the guidebooks.

Whatever. For the record...I have no problem with the rules as they stand....just the reasons why they are the rules.

Should anyone be interested in learning more about these elementary adjustments a few of us are advocating, this site has some good info and examples: http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/tutorial_pages/elements_basic/elements_tutorial.html

PS: After I posted this I realized it might come across as an attack at NibblesandBits and that's not how I intend it. I very much respect the effort she puts into keeping this contest fun and interesting.

This contest should be fun!! This should not be about forcing people to take better photographs. I am very happy with my family pictures that I have proudly displayed throughout my house although I am by no means a professional. I definetly use the point and click approach, but I still like my pictures. I don't understand why people are getting so worked up over this contest.....it should be fun!!!! It's not like you are competing for an all expense paid trip to WDW!!

To Nibbles.....good job and don't let everyone bring you down...you are running this contest so do it as you see fit, if they don't like it, they don't have to participate!

You know, it was arguments like this that made me run (or not run...which ever way you see it) the contests the way I was before, allowing things to become lax. Because I'd tell people how I'd want the contests to be run and almost everyone would be fine with it, but then I'd get 5 or so people that would disagree and "harass" me to try to get me to change my mind. Well, much as it may disappoint some, these are my contests now and I'm tired of you all trying to walk all over me!

I have stated why I don't want to allow enhancements in these contests, but some of you just won't let it rest. But let me say it one more time..by allowing some people to enhance their photos, it is not fair to those who can't. Plain and simple. Why is that so hard for you all to understand? I have over 50 of you yelling at me from 50 different directions and I have to take care of all of you. I want to have the most even playing field possible (which, yes, I'm aware, will never fully be even...as some of you have stated over and over again). To me this is the best way to achieve that goal. (And apparently it was to Speck, and Main Street USA, and Now Inc, who have all run these contests successfully before me.) I'm very sorry that some of you don't argree, but I'm not changing my mind.

And yes, I've had a request to allow for a thread for enhanced photos and a thread for regular images while all under the umbrella of the same contest. Unfortunately, I don't think they will work because the contests will be spread too thin and will cause confusion in the long run. For those of you who feel the need to enhance photos, please visit Legacy's thread. He wants to hold contests where people can do creative things and enhance their images and he does a great job with these contests. However, I don't want enhanced images here.

I am not trying to be a b****, but I get very upset when I am not heard. And I think that some of you just don't want to listen to me, hoping if you talk over me, I'll change my mind, but it's not going to happen.

These photo contests are about capturing moments, not editing them, as it is plainly stated in the rules. And I will repeat this statement too: A good photo is a good photo, no matter whether taken by an ametuer or a pro, no matter whether that person visits every day or every two years, etc, and a good photo should be able to stand alone without being enhanced.

So please stop asking me to change the rules and my mind.

I will not be addressing this any further, so if we could continue this thread for the 2007 ideas...which if I haven't mentioned, there are already some great ideas here, that would be wonderful. Thank you.

Awesome! :sohappy:

And I have a link in my sig to Legacy's thread. I won't be participating in those because I have no clue how to, but I'm sure a lot of you can and you'll be like kids in a candy store. Let's keep THESE contests the way Brad and others have run them and how nibbles is attempting to run them.

Maybe I'm completely off base here, but it seems to me that the biggest issue of all is not really the whole image editing thing, but more the fact that it's a contest at all!

No one can decide on what's fair, no one can even decide on WHY you should vote for a particular photo. But everyone seems to agree that they like looking at all of the photos.

So why not just get rid of the CONTEST aspect and just have it be a "photo theme of the week" kinda thing where everyone can posts whatever pics they want, edited in whatever ways they want.

Then everyone wins.

But then again, I may be the only one with this opinion.

Clearly you don't understand what's being asked for.

Or everyone could just quit whining and enjoy the contests for what they are: FUN

It's supposed to be enjoyable to look at pictures, enjoy different views you don't normally look at, and get some ideas for your next trip. As an added bonus, there's an added chance to "win" best picture of the week. We're all here because we love Disney, so enjoy the photos and stop arguing.

End rant.

I respectfully disaggree.

There would be no point for me to post random photos if a contest were not involved. It adds a bit of fun, and I think enteries would drop if the voting aspect was lost. I'mnot ablut winning, but I like to see what other people prefer in photos, as that helps me take better ones. Voting is a great way to accomplish that.

wdwishes-i'm with you...what happened??

Remember the formula for a "FUN" contest...

:sohappy: K I S S :sohappy:

Nibs..participation is way up in this contest so you're doing something right and you know I'm with ya 100%. The competitive nature adds a fun edge to it but people shouldn't take it so seriously. Winning with 20% of the vote isn't an overwhelming approval of a photo especially if one considers that 80% voted for someone else. And I don't think anyone should hold their breath waiting to be nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

I'll support whatever you decide or if you decide to do nothing.

(Thinking out loud) Adding another level of difficulty (editing) may discourage some people from participating. Something is troubling a few of the participants and it may have to do with the way the voting is conducted. The 'technically best' photo very seldom wins and I think that may be bothering some of the more experienced photographers.

Perhaps we need a panel of impartial, photo-astute members who can judge and choose the best 5 photos and let the rest of us vote on those....
