Great...
Now I have to go back down to WDW to ride the Monorail and try to find "THE Spot". (if still visable after all these years - kinda like a hidden Mickey)
Imagine that speil -
"Please stand clear of the doors (and smoke, and fire, and melting plastic) - Por favor, mantenganse allejado de las puertas (y nombre,y fuego, y fusion de plastico". :ROFLOL:
(probably not correct spanish, but i tried! hahaha)
Sorry - had to throw that in there!
(And only laughable becuase no one was hurt!)
And my crappy photos (feel free to photoshop if you think they can be enhanced)
Gee, scottnj1966!
I see you were the original poster...Did it take you 3 years to find that pic?!?! You are one diligent guy. Props to finding your original thread too!
Scott - interesting find for its historical status. If I recall the company tried a bit of a media blackout with images.
Finally got them scanned and uploaded:
Ok, it may be my monitor or that it's an old newspaper, but wasn't it Monorail Silver that caught fire? This looks green.
Monorail Gold was the only Mark IV train never to have a 6th car.all mark iv trains had SIX cars by 1982 when epcot opened
all mark iv trains had SIX cars by 1982 when epcot opened,
i vaguely recall the train having a hatch at one end, or the other of the cars, plus doors you could open from the inside, kinda like the driver(nose) doors on the mark vi trains have.
awesome scans!!!! thank you posting
I think you all just plugged a gap in WDWs history. Despite the topic, thank you.
Thanks merek for the article. I have never heard of that before. I would freak out if that happened.
looks like u got some pics of old monorail red thats sitting in someones yard. it may not have been by 82 when they all got 6 cars, but by time they were replaced in early 90's all trains had 6 cars. they did have ac, even though the windows on the doors did pop open. if u look at the mark iv they have the same design between the cars, that is where the ac units are. i fondly recall riding yellow during its last month or so of serivce & thinking i was glad it was being repalced as its ac barely worked. disney knew better than trying to put 240 people in a monorail with no ac in the fl heat especially on the epcot beam. i cant recall the web page, but it has been noted many times the original trains only had 5 cars. when wdw realized this wasnt enough capacity they added the 6th car to those trains along with all the newer mark iv's having 6 cars. if we think about it the monorail barn does not have 12 beams, only 11, 10 for trains & one for the "service tractor". the reason for that is wdw did not expect to have 12 trains when the barn was built.:wave:Not true. if you watch the EPCOT grand opening video on you tube (posted in another link here) it shows Mark IV Monorail Black with only 5 cars going by SSE.
The only cars to have a roof hatch was the cab and only in the driver compartment.
Seen here:
The driver would climb out the hatch to the roof and tie onto a small rail on the roof Seen here:
The "hatch" you see at the other and and in the pic below were ventilation hatches (since the Mark IV's did not have A/C) and could not open all the way.
Hope this helps.
