18% Auto gratuity for Party of 6?

I get the feeling that among some folks, there's some weird misconception that tips are some sort of optional thing you can leave if you feel it's been earned, but can disregard or minimize if things aren't extraordinary.

Do you know what the definition for tipping is? Tips are considered a reward even by dictionary definitions. A reward is given to someone who has earned it. You don't reward a child for being bad. You don't reward a dog for being bad. A boss shouldn't reward a bad worker. So why should anyone be forced to give high tips for terrible service? If you are terrible at your job you are going to make less/get less rewards regardless if you are a waiter or something entirely different.

That being said, the 18% tip is more likely included to protect the servers and other staff who do well from those people who leave a $2 tip for a $40 meal. Imagine getting a $2 tip from each person in a party of 6. Disney just wants to protect them from that. If you have a truly awful experience then just speak with a manager. I am sure they would be just as displeased if you have a vaild complaint.

Honestly I have never had a horrible waiter or waitress or bad food in Disney. It has always been pleasant. At home I haven't had bad service and if something was wrong with the food they were very good about bringing me a new plate without a fuss. We start at an 18% tip anyway and adjust up or down accordingly. Don't believe we have ever gone down.

Of course I do. Unfortunately, there's a huge difference between leaving a quarter in a tip jar at a coffeeshop and actually paying the wages of your servers. The weird, awkward restaurant tipping system we've evolved to in America means that tips are technically optional but functionally mandatory. Leaving a low tip doesn't "send a message" to your server any more than "these guys were cheapskates". Standard tip in the Boston area is 20%, and that's what I leave at WDW, as well -- and I've very rarely had occasion to feel bad about it, because 99% of the time, service is fantastic.

At WDW any auto-grat (TIW/AP/CM/DVC/party of 6) goes directly to the servers check. If you pay cash, they have to pay it back to WDW at the end of shift. If you pay less, they pay whatever it should have been so if you decided to deduct any monies due from your check, know that it did indeed cost the server money.
Any service issues should be brought up with a manager at the time of the problem and not at the end when payment is due. A manager is the only person who can adjust the auto grat.
Auto grat is added to the amount of the bill. It is a part of the bill just like a beverage is and needs to be paid. If a guest deducts that amount from their bill it could be considered a walk out and their room could be charged. It is at the managers discretion and if they aren't aware of any issues. they have every right to charge the room for monies due
:)

Stil going on about this? I think the issue is resolved. Let us agree to disagree, you can reward bad behaviour, that's your prerogative, I'll hold people accountable.
Unfortunately, I heard someone else "stiffed" the servers at a fast food chain...

It's only "stil going on" because people keep responding....12 and 13 hours later.

As much as I detest Frozen, "Let It Go."

Possibly agree to disagree and just END.

You are just trying to drag politics into this. There is no requirement to tip at a freaking Chipoltle. I don't think there is even a tip cup at the register.

The automatic 18% gratuity for parties of 6 or more really is garbage. It gives the waiter/waitress no real incentive to give great service, since they already know they're getting a good tip regardless. What they really should do is maybe give an automatic 10% tip and allow the guests the option of giving more to bring it up to 18 or 20% if they feel the service merits it.

No thanks, I have a job already. I'm set.
Of course you are. I suggest that you and the rest of those on this thread who are so righteously indignant about being expected to pay a standard 18% tip in 2015 while on your lavish WDW vacation read a book called "WAITER RANT - THANKS FOR THE TIP - CONFESSIONS OF A CYNICAL WAITER" by Steve Dublanica - New York Times bestseller - published by eccobooks, an imprint of HarperCollins. If you read that cover to cover, you will never think of undertipping or stiffing a waiter again.

I'll pass. And I have every right to be indignant over the Disney company making it mandatory for me to hand over a huge tip on their overpriced meals before I even get to determine if the person's service deserved it.

I'm sure you'll pass.

18% is not a "huge" tip. Please join the rest of us in 2015. 15% - 20% is considered standard. 18% is right in the middle.Your suggestion of a 10% tip is pretty outrageous. Just because the meals are "overpriced" does not provide someone the justification to take it out on the waiter. If the meals are overpriced and one doesn't like to tip, one might be better served eating at home.

Considering we're talking about Disney World restaurants, 18% IS a huge tip. I suggest you join 2015 and realize that not everyone who chooses to work as a waiter or waitress is automatically deserving of a tip in the 15-20% range simply because of their line of work. The quality of the service they give is what my tip for them is based on because it's MY choice.......not because anyone gets to demand it of me. It has nothing to do with whether one likes to tip or not....it's being told what they must give PRIOR to even receiving the service that's the issue here.

Sure, that's fine. If you think you can get away with leaving less than 18% in 2015, go for it, and leave a wake of angry, disappointed servers behind you. That's your prerogative as a diner. I'm just glad I don't have to eat dinner with you or DisneyJunkie.
