So sad indeed...

This happens at least once a year it seems...people should KNOW how much their decks can withstand and know the last time they have been reinforced or "checked"

It's sad...it really is :(

12 innocent lives lost...my prayers go out to all of the families affected

Yes sad news indeed! My prayers go out to thier family and friends, but if it is shaudy construction or that it was in disrepair I`d be suing the pants off the landlord or slumlord as it may be,the complex did look pretty shabby.

If it's in Wrigleyville, looks can be deceiving. That's a nice area and New Trier, which I believe was mentioned, is a "Rich Kid" school. I think it's just another case of too many people and too much alcohol! So sad :(

Edit- just saw the news- turns out it's Lincoln Park! No slums there, that's for sure. I know that porch collapses are too common and maybe it is the fault of the builders/landlords- however, I really don't think they are built to withstand that kind of weight. Either way, I think we can all smell a lawsuit here.

You can bet that no matter what, I would never be in a wooden balcony with 40 other people! I´m pretty sure there was alcohol there, or someone would have thought of that! What a shame and how terrible for the parents... :(

Erika... those things are not built to hold even 20 people...

Very Sad though :(

From all the news reports I have heard and scene.... they are looking for someone to blame... OK NEWSFLASH!!!! 60 People drunk and dancing and jumping about on a wooden structure... common sense here folks... you just dont move your party onto your porch... Its not the owners fault.. its not the contractors fault who built the porch... its not the tree's the wood came from fault.... You just dont do that.... :(

man... You can get a NICE 3 bedroom in the heart of Winter Park (REALLY nice part of Orlando... the Old Money, really artsy, trendy shopping district section) for $1500 a month... and that's including utilities and other amenities.

Im from that area, and also lived in Lincoln Park for awhile. Theres no slums around there period. There are some period houses, and my old place had a wooden deck. But things like that were meant to haold a family and some friends, not that many people. And even if alcohol was involved, that doesnt mean anyone should have died. Bad things happen to good people. I feel really bad for them and their families. Hopefully I wont be hearing that anyone closewas on that deck. But, this is a great area, and there are a lot of parties around here. So I can almost see something like this happening. Sad though

Almost immediately the media jumped on the owner of the building- now they are starting to cut him some slack, and I'm glad to see it. So far they seem to have concluded that the porch was indeed sound.

It looks like most of the victims were in the 20-30 age range, which puts them right where I am :( ...just starting out in life.

Yeah...thats where Im at to. The midway point actually. And being in that range, theres no better place to live than Wrigleyville. The bars, the people, the places....its all right there. I know a lot of people around that age there, and not a day goes by where you cant go find a party, or something like that going on. I lived in a 3 flat a block west of southport, Just south of Irving Park. Great area. And I can see the parties now, and the ones wed throw all summer long. I can see this happening. Its a horrible thing. Im not sure I could handle something like that.

I hear you, Tim. I have a few friends that live right there. I can totally see this happening to them. I would hope that they would realize the limitations of a wooden porch; unfortunately, alcohol has a way of overtaking common sense.

True...but its one of those things--I doubt everyone on the deck was drunk. Somebody had to realize the danger, but its one of those things a lot of people just dont think about. A few years ago, Walter Jacobsen said something really distrubing. A DePaul student was walking home from the bar after a day of classes. As he walked down the sidewalk, he was struck and killed by a speeding minican driven by the mother of a child who had just broke his arm, on her way to the hospital. Anyway, Jacobsen said that, Maybe if he would have gone back to his dorm after class, instead of the bar, he would have been able to get out of harms way.

Now, granted, this is a lot different, but do you honestly think about a structures integrity all the time? Like the kid killed at the Express a few weeks ago......sometimes, sober or not, things like this do not come to mind.
But, on the flip side, without alcohol, a gathering aon a balcony like that probably wouldnt have happened....just some random thoughts....not trying to change the world here. But Ive been on decks like that before, probably not that crowded, but the thought of the deck collapsing without warning has only occured to me once, at a halloween party, and it did collapse. With no injuries though.

Just some rambling.......sorry. :D
