‘Glow With the Show’ Ears Coming to Walt Disney World Resort This Fall

I guess the issue with the hats is not when they start, but afterwards. You have to expect that hat to become the standard, OR designate a special showing twice a year where you encourage folks to bring the hats.

The only people who wear them at DL now are the crowd control CMs who are forced to wear them. If you're lucky you'll see 2-3 ear hats scattered in the audience. It's a fun concept but it never really took off and doesn't look so good unless everyone wears them!

Lack of widespread use probably equates to their price. I've read some trip reports concerning parents of several children balking at the $25.00 price tag!

Interesting Illuminations and MSEP are not included... I'm sure that adds fuel to the fire of rumors that Illuminations and or MSEP is leaving/getting upgraded.

I thought omitting those shows was odd  Is there any other possible reason.. such as perhaps because folks are much more spread out that they wouldnt get a good effect off of them? I dont know but with all of the private area viewing parties for Illuminations it seems like a wasted opportunity to generate $ and have a good effect from them even if in a limited area

Just a dumb waste of time, money and materials.

Folks don't/won't buy these. And if you don't have 85% of an audience wearing them, then there is no purpose and you might as well be wearing Tonto with a bird hats (now $12.99 at Disney Stores nationally)

Always the ray of sunshine...

Just curious how you know nobody will buy them? Comparing them to Tonto hats made for a movie (an awful one at that) is a bit of a stretch.

I think it's a cool idea. I am optimistic it will catch on and it will look AWESOME. I know I will definitely buy them next time I watch F!.

My ears broke after a month. I only used them 3 nights at Disneyland this August. About a week ago, they started flickering white and glowing awkwardly. Soon they just died completely.

I hope it was just the battery that died.

It is a neat idea. We saw it in person when we visited Disneyland back in March. I concur that there aren't a whole bunch of them in the crowd (though they could probably do a better job promoting what they do in the stores and lower the price by $5). I didn't realize until about halfway through WoC that the hats were blinking/changing color with the show...then I missed about 2 minutes of the show as I stared at the hats second guessing myself.

At DLR they had at least two AP events where the hats were handed out for free so they could get B-roll of a full house at WOC and Fantasmic wearing them. Looked absolutely incredible.

In real life, no one buys them and that effect is never achieved.

Tokyo is introducing a derivative this week as well:

I am really happy about Glow with the Show coming to WDW... but I must say, a wand sounds like a better idea. Rather than your part of the show being on top of your head, it's in your hand where you can see it... Like someone before me said, with the hat you don't get enjoyment from your own purchase, but from other people's purchases... the wand would solve that issue...

I have 2 pairs that did the same thing, I thought the hats themselves were malfunctioning. Swapped out the batteries and both are working fine.

I still think its funny that people are upset about the price! If you get a normal Mickey Mouse ear hat with embroidery that costs $18 total! So is $7 more really that awful? I don't think so...I think it's a cool concept and can't wait to get a pair like I stated earlier, but I think complaining about the price is rediculous because even when you buy a normal baseball cap these days those are usually more than $25 bucks and they don't even light up! LOL

I also don't think that the "people don't buy as many hats at wdw" statement is not believable either!

I'm definitely not paying $25 for glowing ears, and as a family of 5 there's no way I'm dropping $75 so each kid can have them. I look at these as a gimmick (looks cool, but passing fad) whereas the embroidered mouse ears are a part of a family tradition for many people. My parents still have my mouse ears from my first visit in 1974 (the cool 70's black with white ears). All three of our kids got them on their first visits and are prominently displayed in their bedrooms. The reality is they wear them for maybe an hour in the parks and then sit in the room waiting to be packed for home.

And regards to the baseball cap, on our trip in August I bought one for $25. Navy blue, with gold old school logo on the front. Very tasteful, not like most of the garbage they sell where they try to squeeze every character known to man, the castle, WDW, and the year all on the front of a sweatshirt.

I'm not sure where you live, but in the Philly/SJ area I don't see too many people wearing mouse ears out and about. The price per wear for mouse ears is about $25, $12 if you're lucky. My new hat will spend many years well worn, then transition as my beach hat at the Jersey shore, and then finally as my lawn mowing hat where it will finally be retired after about 10 years. Price per wear about 1/1000th of one cent.

Also, with people spread out so much it would take a lot more infrastructure to make it work. These hats use IR (like a TV remote) for communication so your hat must be in line of site to the transmitter.

That's great to hear! I can't wait to use them at the world!
EDIT: What kind of batteries do they use? I'm going to the store soon and I would like to pick them up.
