I’m thinking it’s a combo of reporting delays and also holding out and doing only age based vs expanding to other groups like essential workers which has happened in a lot of other places. PA was way behind in the beginning but has seemed to catch up as far as the percent used and percent vaccinated but demand here is still high. If I go to CVS and click on FL there are about 30 cities with appointments available. Good thing they are expanding soon.

It already opened to all 40+ which should be roughly 1/2 the population eligible and yet those CVS appointments are open. Also, on Monday it took several hours for all of the Publix appointments to fill for this week.
It's probably less weakening demand and more people waiting because they heard how hard it was to get an appointment. Throw in a little confusion that there are different websites to book for different vaccination sites.
It's probably too early to switch to a walk in model like the flu shot. Maybe if weekly supply doubles.

Great news regarding Pfizer - guessing Moderna's long-term efficacy (so far) & protection against the variants will be pretty similar. Now, let's continue masking up for a few more months get those cases down so we can avoid even worse variants.

So far all study results that have been released show Pfizer and Moderna being very similar. I'd be curious to know what is different about the two vaccines. I think, at the end of the day, they both do the same thing; use mRNA to get your cells to produce the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2. I know there are some differences in the ingredients between the two. There must also be some other difference since Pfizer's second shot is after 3 weeks and Moderna after 4. So far, every time the two are studied in a similar manner they provide similar protection.

I read where Pfizer's vaccine is 85% effective two weeks after the first shot.

While I had a few minutes, I used the approximate population numbers that the State of FL is using and calculated the percentage with at least one shot in each age group that is completely eligible for vaccination. 40+ just started three days ago so the 45-54 group will definitely get a lot higher quickly.
45-54 22.1%
55-64 40.4%
65-74 76.6%
75-84 77.6%
85+ 65%
The 85+ group is a surprise to be so much lower than the rest of 65+. I wonder why. Maybe difficulty of mobility? I know that doctor's offices have been given J&J doses so if that is the issue hopefully being able to do it on a doctor visit will help.

Funny, why are some states in different age brackets for administering the corona vaccine. Our state has recently opened it up to everyone.

Having loved ones in FL I'd guess ease of finding vaccines is the issue. Or lack there of. Took months for some 80+ friends to find them. Had to drive an hour too each time for both to get their shots. I offered to look for closer to see if I could help, but they didn't take me up on it. Many don't have the ability or patience to deal with online or even redialing.

In an Israeli study, they say Pfizer is 85 percent effective after the first dose. And they are way ahead of us in doses.

I'm seeing some signs that demand for vaccines is slowing down. Had a pharmacy call yesterday saying they had 5 extra shots available and couldn't find anyone who wanted them. Said if we knew anyone who wanted one to have them call, but everyone in our family has received the shot (even those in their 20s). South Florida is probably different, but anyone who wants to get a shot in the panhandle has probably already received one.

Because there is limited supply and previously more limited supply so there had to be some way to control the demand so it wasn't nearly impossible to get an appointment. Most States are opening to all ages within the next two weeks. FL opens to 16+ (Pfizer, 18+ for the others) on Monday.

In Florida they will come to you, transport you or do whatever it takes to get you a dose if you are 80+. Maybe the rural population is not being served but on the west coast and in the Villages it is not for lack of availability. It was hard at first but no longer.

I continue to say that an incentive is needed (and soon) for the under 40 population to get them vaccinated if we want to get to herd immunity. There is a huge percentage of people in the under 40 demographic (regardless of race, ethnicity or political views) who just aren't motivated to get the shot. They aren't anti-COVID vaccine but they really don't care if they get infected and don't want to be bothered getting vaccinated.
Maybe it can become a thing to post videos on Tic Tok of getting your COVID shot? I'm too old to know what appeals to people in their 20s anymore.

Just show all people under 40 that and it should help them consider the vaccine. Our hospitals are filling with younger people now. Due to that Ontario is going into lockdown for 28 days starting Saturday.

I just got a second shot from COVID-19 vaccine today, so I'll be fully vaccinated by two weeks! The pandemic will be over soon in USA! Victory is ours!

Getting there wasn't the problem. Getting an appointment was. On the west coast too. They finally finished their 2nd dose. I got my husband a no waste dose in Ohio before they got their 1st shot.
I've helped enough loved ones in FL. Spent hours at a time sometimes to help. The ability to book was the road block.

I agree that many in this group are apathetic about getting vaccinated. Oddly enough, I have two friends in their 30s with very serious health conditions and neither has received the vaccine. Both told me they thought the whole thing was overblown. To make it even stranger, they are both die-hard liberals.
