I would say it's been a year. Get over it. I'm so done with all of this. It's why I don't post in this thread much. We are nearing the end of this, we should focus on that and less on the crap that has happened.

I agree that nobody is going to change anyone’s mind and we should focus on the future now. We all have different opinions on how things were handled and what was good and what didn’t work but there will be time to look back at that later. Right now the main focus is on vaccinations. We get enough people vaccinated and the virus is beaten down and we return to normal. Is there anyone that doesn’t want to return to normal?
Even if you don’t fear the virus or don’t think it’s a risk to you, we don’t get a return to normal any time soon without enough people getting the vaccine. Resistance to the vaccine is only going to delay things. There are enough people out there who won’t return to normal activities while cases are high and plenty of businesses who won’t remove all restrictions until that time either. Whether you agree with that or not it’s a fact so you can either waste time griping about it which solves nothing or get with the program. If someone really doesn’t want to get the vaccine that’s their choice, just quietly sit it out, but to actively discourage others from getting it is foolish. We don’t need 100% of people vaccinated but we will need a high enough number.
Stats on the vaccine so far. 528M doses administered worldwide...zero deaths directly linked to taking the vaccine. Since the start of the pandemic 2.7M deaths from Covid.

I learned it didn’t matter what the government did (NY, Cali, Florida). Strict or not strict, people were gonna people. Not saying it’s right, just saying unless you’re prepared to heavily fine people, the restrictions aren’t preventing surge(s) if people refuse to cooperate.

The only concern I have right now at least here in Canada is the amount of people under 40 being hospitalized now due to Covid. It's going to be a bit before that age group get vaccinated here.
I agree to an extent. The difference is they have been fining people here and are charging people up to $2000 a person for anyone flying into Canada to stay at a quarantine hotel til your test comes back.

In my town the Starbucks was closed and the local coffee shop stayed open. (To go only of course) during the strictest of times.
And the local coffee shop wasn’t going against orders. Food service was allowed to be open for carry out.

Through yesterday's report (there won't be a report today) FL was a little over 73% of 65+ with at least one dose. I agree that 85%+ is reachable for that age/risk group.That lines up with the CDC tracker:

Up to 71.8% 65+ with at least 1 dose. I assume almost everyone who got shot 1 will go back for the second and like you said even 1 dose provides a really high level of protection against death and serious illness. Since deaths are on a lag I think in a month or so the death numbers will be really down. I can’t find any real solid data on number of people under 65 with health conditions vaccinated but most states opened later for that group so I imagine they are a bit behind 65+. I think there are still quite a few 65+ and high risk people who will be willing to get vaccinated too. We are at 71.8% 65+ even though we have been essentially forcing people to jump through hoops to get it. When we turn towards more proactive plans to get the rest in I think we can get to 85%+ for that group. Same for people with medical conditions that make them high risk. It may be a little harder convincing that many young and healthy people.
For the under 40 crowd, there has to be some incentive to get a high percentage to bother. I suggest some kind of fully vaccinated pass that you can wear with a lanyard around your neck and a bar code on it. Then have an app to check the code and it pops up the person's picture to verify it is the person who was fully vaccinated (no name or any other information). Anybody who has the pass can do whatever they want and not have to follow any COVID rules.
I just don't see how you will convince a high percentage of people with very low personal risk to go get a shot that takes some effort to get and may have some unpleasant side effects without some kind of strong personal incentive. What percentage of 30 year old people get the flu shot typically?

There have been some studies showing that even after 1 dose of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine there is a high level of protection from severe illness and death. Right how 72% of the 65+ population has at least 1 shot. That should significantly cut down on the vast majority of the most vulnerable population potentially dying. Younger people with health conditions are behind 65+ but not by more than a month or so. Deaths are on a lag and most of the deaths reported today happened in the last month plus death Is not always quick with Covid so in theory a death reported today could be someone who died March 1 and got sick mid-February. 4-6 weeks from now the deaths reported will be from people infected today so hopefully we see a big drop off.
As far as cases and a surge goes, it’s not a guarantee. Here’s a pretty good article describing the parallels to Israel and how things may rollout in the US.

Flu shots were up to nearly 60% of the US population this year so at least some people who normally don’t get one decided to do so. We also need to continue to stress to people that Covid isn’t just a mild case of the flu. Do people really not care about losing their taste and smell or potential long haul symptoms that simply don’t exist with the flu? Plus we all have a level of natural immunity to the flu since we’ve been exposed to it numerous times in the past. Not enough immunity to not get sick but nobody has that natural immunity to Covid...until they get it or get a vaccine. Hopefully a large number of the people thinking that way have already been exposed to Covid so they do have some natural immunity.
I have no issue with vaccine passports but I’m not sure how practical that plan is in the short term. My hope is enough people get the vaccine and we don’t need them.

I'm not looking to diminish the tragedy that each day brings, but am trying to show that improvement has taken place, just over a month ago, the daily deaths were averaging over 3000 and now we are finally nearer to under 1,000.
However, what is alarming is something like I've pointed out before....Michigan...if this turns out to be some impossible to handle variant, perhaps the border to the mitten and UP need be secured.

It looks like the going theory is that the surge in Michigan is at least partially driven by the UK variant. They have the second most cases of that variant in the country next to FL. Although the surge in cases is a bad sign, it’s good to see that they are actively monitoring for variants and so far have only found a handful of cases with the more troublesome S African variant. The approved vaccines are highly effective vs the UK variant which makes up just about 100% of cases in Israel now and we’ve seen the cases there continue to drop rapidly. The second article below also mentions that in one of the counties with the highest increase in cases the vast majority of new infections are in the under 50 crowd who are less likely to be vaccinated so the vaccines appear to be working.

My MIL last night was saying that she thinks (here in Canada) we should adjust the age program. Once we’ve gotten to older risk group done, they should switch and do the 16-40 group. Then do the middle. Just based on the current trend.

There was talk of that in the US as well, but we didn’t go that route. It makes some sense to hit the people more likely to spread if your goal is to crush a surge. Being 44 I’d miss the cut but it would be relatively cheap to get a fake ID made up saying I’m 39 and a bottle of Just For Men

Honestly, the probably biggest reason that I got the COVID vaccine is to minimize the chance of losing my sense of taste and smell. As somebody who is pretty low risk, that's the symptom that I really don't want.
