It is very difficult to convince people - especially at risk older people - that they should not be celebrating the holidays with family members who they haven't see since last March. Especially if they feel that, despite all of their precautions, they may still pick it up from someone in the grocery store, and if they do, they may die without ever having one last Holiday with their family.

Yeah, masks are only one aspect. It just seems like the most controversial in a lot of ways which really shouldn’t be. I see far less resistance to social distancing in general, although I think a lot of that may just be people do stuff like family gatherings behind closed doors so we don’t know about it while not wearing a mask in public where it’s required generally draws more attention to the violator.

The view regarding masks has not changed. They were always recommended for persons believed to be contagious. What changed is the understanding of who could be contagious.

I agree, but the chances of getting it from a brief visit to a grocery store are so much less! We did insist that my 90-year-old mother-in-law use delivery services, but it's hard if you're not used to it and for some areas it isn't even an option. It's not my place to judge anyone who feels the need to celebrate the holidays with family; I'm just stating what the experts know about how the virus is primarily transmitted. I know people who are eager to impose huge fines for not wearing a mask in a store, but rationalize gatherings with family and friends because they "think they're safe."

Pre-pandemic my wife had always wanted to do grocery delivery but I never minded going to the story. The pandemic gave us a reason to do delivery, so I believe my wife is responsible for covid. ;)

Will the COVID virus ever really be completely GONE? Maybe not as prevalent, maybe under control, maybe causing a disease that is treatable, maybe for which an effective vaccine has been created. GONE, hard to imagine. If wishes were horses.

Covid doesn’t need to be completely gone, it just needs a vaccine and/or better treatments. Measles isn’t gone, but you rarely hear about a measles outbreak and when one occurs they are quick to do tracing and contain it. With an effective vaccine widespread community spread of Covid can likely be eliminated.
