So my DD takes the bus FROM school to home at the end of the day..... But I drive her to school in the morning so she does not have to be at the bus stop at 6:15am!

With transportation from me, she walks out our front door at 6:40am and she's still @ school 5 minutes before the 7am requirement.

Wow that is really early to start school, is that for all students? Our students start at 8:05 am and there has been talk about pushing the start and end times back with the new research that teens do better with later start times.

The bus drivers are shared...move from school to school. High Schoolers walk in at 7am....Middle Schoolers walk in at 8am.....Elementary Kids walk in at 9am. Not likely to change. ☺

My district is in a similar boat--or bus, as it were. The high school district has its own buses, but shared between schools. DD has the earlier start time, in seats at first bell. That rings at 7:30. Across the street, they go to a school in the same district, but beacause of the shared buses, they don't have first bell until 8:15. Not likely to change any time soon.

Thanks for the detailed answer, Steve! It's nice that she has the option of the bus, or she can catch a ride with her boyfriend or you. For some kids, they may only have the option of a bus, and that's certainly fine too. (Especially nowadays, I know a number of parents prefer that their kids don't walk to school with all the nutcases out there.)

Yeah, she is looking at schools with palm trees. Her older brother is at school, not far from here, and is home most weekends. A lot of places he is looking at for grad school are a plane ride away. I am trying to wrap my head around the very real possibility, that one could be on the west coast, while the other is on the east coast.

Never thought of this stuff when we decided that having children would be cool, did we?

I hope she has a great senior year! It is difficult to stand aside, sometimes, isn't it? But, it is part of their growing up. I got a little emotional for her first day, this year. It hit me like a ton of bricks, I only get one more first day of school picture after this. DD promised she would send me a selfie for first day of classes when she is in college. I hope she does.

I forgot to mention that when my oldest went to Colorado, she came home only twice, (Christmas) for almost her first two years. She met the guy that would ultimately become her husband at a party the first year she was there and decided to stay there over the summer between her first and second year. She took a job doing landscaping (lawn mowing, weed pulling, etc.) to earn money for her second years expenses. On a positive note they have now been married 21 years this October but together for close to 25 years. That said, I can tell you the her mother and I really felt deserted and wondered what we had done wrong that she didn't want to come home. Then realized that we were young once and it became clear what motivated her.

Our kiddos started elementary school at 7:45a, middle school at 8:30, and high school at 9:05. They got out at 2:45p, 3:30, and 4:10, respectively.
As far as I’ve heard, it hasn’t changed.

I teach at an independent school... this year we hit 55,000 for 7th grade. Great school and philosophy, it’s hard to justify and rationalize the cost for average people but the kids are around professionals in their field. It’s the type of school that exposes them to a myriad of educational and professional opportunities that otherwise aren’t available in the public system... and that’s saying a lot considering we have some of the best public schools in the Us here in Massachusetts. Schools in this league are Ivy League factories. Of course, we could argue all day whether that is truly a measure of “success”. I see points on both sides. However, with all that said I love what I do... it’s an amazing community, we are well supported in what we do and offer, and the kids are genuinely great.

I scratch my head at the school bus system... I live in a small town of 7,000 outside of Boston and I commonly see 1/2 empty buses that have to stop every 17 feet because kids can’t walk...

I believe that is due to liability issues.

Well... graduating class of 70... 40% go to Ivy League and about 5 to Harvard every year. It’s impressive. These kids are very bright.

Commonly done in places that have no official sidewalks that allow non-highway walking to get to a designated bus pickup location. Around here they all have group neighborhood bus stops. Sidewalks everywhere.
