Africa is a rich, diverse continent, don’t debase such a place with shallow overlays. (Read between the lines on that one)

Also, the problem with the Marvel contract is that in being so obsessed about which characters they can put into domestic Disney parks, they have lost sight of the far more crucial threads of creative control and revenue sharing. @marni1971 notes that some at CMSA and UNI like having this power over Disney, but it’s just that Disney is too greedy and dumb to see what power they hold over them WRT Marvel.

Probably because the list of characters they were and were not allowed to use was set at the time the contract was made, the contract even refers to another document that lists them. The GotG characters from the movie weren't created until 2008, well after Islands of Adventure opened.

Big Hero 6 would be another example. Anything Marvel has done post MCA deal that wasn’t included in MSHI that isn’t directly connected to the families like the Avengers or X-Men is a OK. Problem being that almost all of the valuable stuff, like Black Panther, is covered.

Is there a Black Panther cut out in MSHI?

Universal's rights extend to any characters currently in use as well as those characters' "families." For example, the Dr. Doom attraction means that Universal obviously holds the rights to Dr. Doom, but Doom is also the arch-nemesis of the Fantastic Four, so Disney can't use the Fantastic Four. Universals rights extend (more or less) over the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and the Avengers. The confusion is that, throughout Marvel's history, just about every character has been an Avenger at some point.

that's where it gets super-tricky...
'families' related to what's currently being used.

spidey's kind of always been on his own, but he was used from the get-go (like hulk)...
everybody else known was either being used overtly or can be connected via association with x-men, ff, or avengers.

thus far, approach has been to simply avoid anything questionable eastward, not skirt the line - certainly an odd situ, but you know there's lawyers at the ready... best to avoid

I meant that it’s as simple as Disney building an attraction based on an IP they have the right to use re: Guardians.

The deal itself may be complicated, but we can rest assured that Disney’s lawyers know it intimately enough to keep the parks from investing in attractions that will get them into legal trouble. Any Marvel attractions built in WDW will be because Disney has the right to do so.

In this case it’s not because of a loophole, it’s because east coast park rights are available to Disney for Guardians.

Universal is limited to the older comic style of Marvel which looks completely diffeeent from Disney’s Marvel. The only reason Uni wants to hold onto it is so that WDW can’t go Marvel Crazy in Orlando. Which is a good thing. Honestly the Marvel island at IOA sucks. Hulk could, the spinner the drop towers could be themed to anything. The only loss, and it would be major, is Spider-Man. That’s still a top 5 attraction in the world, IMO.

Don’t forget Storm Force... honestly the X-Men deserve a second attraction. Keep Storm Force for the kids, but have a family rollercoaster/ dark ride too (that doesn’t require 3D glasses).

The whole island needs a new look. Spider-Man is amazing, but everything around it looks cheap (Storm, Doom, the shops, etc).

Do we have a status for Captain Marvel? She was in the Avengers family as Ms. Marvel in the 80s, so I’m guessing Disney won’t be able to use her at WDW next year, but I didn’t expect Doctor Strange to be used either.

Universal/NBC should prove their progressive posturing by carving out an exception for Black Panther. Disney could repay the gesture by giving up IoA Marvel merchandise monies.
