Only a "Fool" Would Believe the 5th Park is Near...

But that rental car isn't NECESSARY. I'm with you that personally every time I'm in Orlando I have a car the whole time, and that's no matter if I'm going to Disney or Uni. I want to be able to go where I want when I want to. But if you're trying to pinch pennies to afford a trip, you don't get a car. You either use free hotel shuttles (which nearly all have to Uni outside of the Disney resorts. lol)

Totally agree that Uni's hotels are a better value (and better resorts!) than even a class lower resort at Disney. No argument here.

The argument I don't really understand is why someone would let the size of resort (and amount of things to do) effect where they chose to go. Why would it matter to me if I went to Uni and got to see every little thing, compared to that same amount of time at Disney and get to see 70% of what I prioritize? I wouldn't skip a Disney vacation simply because I knew I didn't have enough time to see it all.

I do. Sure. Another park would also mean more hotels, restaurants, etc... They would fill that capacity. Trust me, I'd love to see a 5th gate simply take 15% of the crowds away from the existing 4 parks, but I just can't see that being the case. I think you'd see crowds levels remain very close in the existing 4 parks, with a 5th park just as crowded. The people will come. They always come. Disney's marketing would ensure it.
Especially if they bought the rights to Game of Thrones and made the 5th park. Call it the seven kingdoms and watch it do better then MK. My hopes and dreams, that's all.

Adding a fifth park would mean an extra park day for an averege WDW vacation which means more park ticket income. If they invest in parks people all ready spend a day in, the people go on one extra attraction. A new park means an extra day of shopping, dinning and hotel stay. Another argument is that a fifth park is better for the guest flow maybe releasing some pressure from the Magic Kingdom. And the next question is what would the theme be since we have a castle park, a furture/world showcase park, movie park and zoo? I hope for a DisneySea style park which is without doubt the best ThemePark not just Disney park in the world.

Then you're paying for a car rental which is about $80 per day which evens out the cost from staying at a Moderate Resort. However, you are definitely correct that staying off resort property you can get very nice rooms.
$80.00 per day for a car? What is it a stretch limo? Granted I haven't rented a car in Florida since 2010, but, this month you can get a full size car for 5 days for $129.00 ($25.00 per day) (Travelocity). Which was pretty much what I paid back in 2010. That might get you a room at POP, approximately the size of a walk in closet except smaller. Now I drive my own car down from NC, so, I'm paying for that anyway and like you say, I am free to go anyplace. I have found that Disney isn't the only thing worth seeing in Central Florida and beyond.

If a new land takes 5 or 6 years to add a couple rides and an eatery then a new park would reasonably be expected to take 15 to 20 years to plan and build?

The Florida project was announced in 1965 and opened in 1971. Granted that was over 45 years ago and construction has changed, but once ground breaks I could see them getting a park open in 5 years if they really wanted to. (This is all hypothetical as no ground will be breaking on a fifth park anytime soon)

Just priced for the sake of pricing the cost for a 7 day trip to Orlando with 4 days with park hoppers at WDW and 2 Day with Park hopper at Universal. The cost for the theme park tickets WDW 1,556 Universal 869. Then through travelocity I priced hotels I can get a good moderate hotel for 125 -175 night. Depending on what I am looking for. WDW All Star is 125 night. Sheraton 154 night average. So this trip with hotel at 125 would cost $3,300 for the week. That is a 7 night trip that is actually not to bad plus gas to drive to the destination. Food you can add anyway you want but the price is what you choose on that one... You can get grocery and do it very very cheap... which most do for most of the stay.... Now I would skip the park hoppers and save some money if I was on a budget but for a week vacation to a theme park this is really not that bad! And the sad thing all those that say universal is so much for two days!

Now is this still a lot of money heck ya but it is roughly 7% of a family income if they are making 55K a year.... Now as we all know a family making just 55K a year with 2 kids more then likely will not be going on this trip every year and more then likely would never ever stay for 6 days in the parks... but it is the bare bones cost for the trip. for a week stay in Orlando if you want 4 days in WDW and 2 in Universal.
What about a single parent of 2 teenage daughters making 40K/year. A week in O-town is doable if you lop off.....Disney.

Fortunately, we live in O-town and do "The Parks" WAY TOO MUCH, so instead, we'll be slumming it at the Marriott Key Largo Bay and snorkling the Molasses Reef. $2200 for the week including the 2 open water snorkeling trips. You gotta love those "Hurricane Season" rates in the Keys.

You guys can knock yourselves out in the Vacation Kingdom. I got a bottle of rum the size of my head and a Stephen King book.

Not comparing apples to apples on vacation destinations though... This is if you want to do a Orlando vacation it is not outrageous considering the price of the additional tickets...

In you example you pay for the hotel and its one amenities.... not a total of 6 parks in my example...

Sorry but that does cost extra

FYI great area for your trip...

After a quick search Animal Kingdom broke ground in 1995 and as we all know opened in 1998. For another example IoA broke ground in 1997 and opened 2 years later. 5 years is too much even for Disney.

Good luck finding something to do for an entire week at Uni, they're not quite there yet. 2 days for parks, 1 day Ci
A lot of people spend a week at the Holiday Inn Oceanside Myrtle Beach.

I know Universal sucks because it's not the kind of place where you make a spreadsheet to keep track of your Breakfast/Character Buffet, your 9:30am FP+, your 11am FP+, your lunch ADR, your 2pm FP+, then scramble to be in place for the 3pm parade, 4:30pm FP+, 6pm ADR at a resort not where your at, get back to nightly spectacular due jour, wait for bus back to resort. Rinse, Repeat, until your relaxing vacation is over.

Maybe a lot of those people at the Holiday Inn Oceanside have actually "done" Disney before.

I think he was suggesting from concept and planning through opening day.

A good corrolarry would be Shanghai. How long was that from planning to opening? At least 5 years, I think. I would expect similar for a 5th gate (which isn't anywhere close to being built and in hindsight is sort of funny to have a 10 page thread over).

Come on now, the 5th gate is up there with "monorail expansion" and "hot cheese removal" in terms of popular topics of discussion on these boards.

Absolutely not apples to apples. Because I chose a "lesser" option to "The Vacation Kingdom" I will be adding some serious "upgrades" to my vaca. I have a Sunset Seaside Sea Salt Exfoliation and Swedish Massage package set up ($325). The 2 snorkeling trips I have set up are private charters, not tourist cruises. Key Largo has become our go to respite from Otown.

As an aside, I was at ESPN WWoS today for work. The Paraguay Soccar Team is here for the Copa Games. My station needed video. I have been payed to be at Disney way too much in the past month. The Invictus Games, G. W. Bush at Shades of Green, Disney Springs Grand Opening, DAK Night Media event (@7:30am), ProBowl announcement, Paraguay Soccar Team arrives.

If I lived in the town I would not vacation here either.... You hate or sickness of the area is on a different level due to where you live and what you deal with day in and day out. I would not go spend a week dwtn chicago when i live here everyday... no thanks...

Concept to reality I can see 5 years. This also puts us at a timeline of a very early 2020's opening for Universal's third park since Comcast themselves have admitted to being in the early planning stages of what they're doing with the land they just bought.

Haha, I drove to Chicago for the 4th of July Weekend last Summer. Drove up on Friday saw a couole of concerts on Sat. & Sun. Drove back to Orlando on Monday. Can you say, "Road Trip"?

If you really want to know how much I hate Disney, I actually seriously priced out a fall trip to Disneyland...today. I LOVE Destination Theme Park Resorts. I still get that "thrill" the first time I see the monorail almost everytime I go on property. I notice every pair of mouse ears and every Disney Parks plastic shopping bag when I'm at MCO doing a story about Someplace, Upnorth being shut down because of snow. I understand being a pixie dust addict because I am one.

WDW is like a bad dealer cutting "The Dust" with baby laxative. While the punk behind the 7/11 on Kirkman has been serving up some "pure".

It's a mindless exercise, but one that happens with regularity. I don't have any idea why because Disney has no plans for one and it would be a disaster under current circumstances as you have four parks that they can't maintain or keep fresh as is. Yet, that never stops these things.

And I usually drop a few buckets of realism into them, get yelled at and then leave and they go on and on ... hey, where can you get a good cheese steak in O-Town?

Well said.

As a hot sandwich lover, I'd like to know this as well.

Then you're paying for a car rental which is about $80 per day which evens out the cost from staying at a Moderate Resort.

Leaving aside that rental cars don't cost anywhere close to that, a better comparison to factor in would be Uber, as that will take you to and from an offsite/onsite hotel like WBC or the Hotel Plaza hotels to the parks for about ten bucks, and is much quicker and easier than the Disney buses (apart from to MK where you have to go to the TTC).

In the days when rental cars and taxis were expensive, the Disney bus system was a benefit, but now the huge difference in price between hotels, and the speed with which you get to the parks (offsite + Uber is much quicker than onsite + Disney bus) means there's no benefit at all from staying onsite when it comes to transportation.
