Disney acquires rights to 'Indiana Jones' Franchise. The implications for WDW?

From Variety:
The Walt Disney Studios and Paramount Pictures have reached a distribution and marketing agreement for the Indiana Jones franchise.

Under the arrangement, Disney gains distribution and marketing rights to future films, in addition to retaining the ownership rights it secured when it acquired Lucasfilm.

Paramount will continue to be responsible for distribution of the first four films in the franchise and will receive a financial participation on any future films that are produced and released.

Disney has not officially announced that a fifth films is in the works.

While promoting his Relativity film “Paranoia” in August, Harrison Fordexpressed interest in doing another film but, as of right now, no writers have been set to write a script.

Sources say that Steven Spielberg, who directed the previous films, would still be interested in helming future pics but, like with the other installments, a story would first need to be hashed out before Spielberg would ever commit. Insiders also added that while George Lucas has sold his stake in Lucasfilm to Disney, he still may have a part in developing the story like he and Spielberg had done in the past.

That said, Disney will likely move quickly to get a film in motion. Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger has expressed a lot of interest to monetize the brand ever since Disney bought Lucasfilm last year.
The last installment, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” grossed $783 million worldwide.

Per IGN:
"Over the summer, Harrison Ford indicated that he was still up for donning the fedora once more, and a more recent rumor said that part of Ford’s deal to return as Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode VII involved getting a commitment from Lucasfilm and Disney that a fifth Indiana Jones movie would be developed."

Since it looks like Iger is planning to give the Indiana Jones franchise a big push like he is doing with Marvel and Star Wars could this throw a monkey wrench in already existing proposals for WDW particularly the MGM Studios park? We know that over the years various Indiana Jones proposals were considered could something be green lit to tie into an Indiana Jones V?

So does this news mean that Indiana Jones 5 is actually happening? Over the summer, Harrison Ford indicated that he was still up for donning the fedora once more, and a more recent rumor said that part of Ford’s deal to return as Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode VII involved getting a commitment from Lucasfilm and Disney that a fifth Indiana Jones movie would be developed.

The way they have been acquiring IP's recently, if they put park projects on hold because of the next big thing they would never get anything built.

Before people say HF is too old to continue the franchise might I suggest it is past time to consider potentially rendering the character virtually at some point with Ford possibly doing the voice work. The technology is surely now available to make it happen. Just a thought.

I predict the stunt show will close and IJ will return in new and unexpected ways. My guess is either at the MK or DAK.

Couldn't be more pleased. :)

Well, they owned the franchise already when they bought Lucasfilm. This is more like the deal they made with Paramount regarding the Marvel movies.

Anyway, I LOVE the Indy franchise, specifically Raiders and Last Crusade (it's was a crime that Connery didn't get a Best Supporting Actor nomination for that movie).

The only downside is that I'm going to miss the transition from the Paramount Logo to something in the film, as that was always cool (and you'll notice that Joss Whedon paid homage to that with the opening to Serenity). I would hope that if an Indy five comes, they do something similar with the Disney castle cutting to an old castle that Indy is exploring.

Sort of like the Fox fanfare... :(

I don't think Harrison Ford is too old to portray the Dr, most of all because Indiana Jones is old. I like the natural progression of this iconic character as he transitions into an older man. Perhaps they may go back and film the "lost years", say between Raiders and Temple or Temple and Crusade or after crusade? I think Harrison Ford has earned the right to give the good Dr a good send off. Pass the torch or ride off into the sunset. Recasting for the in-between stuff and no virtual Ford.

As for what this means for WDW? Who knows, but for TDO, I'd imagine just more merch they can sell.

Not MK but I could see this in AK. Maybe dinoland would be redone into something else and dinosaur would become an indy ride?

I'd gladly take a new continent for Animal Kingdom with a 30s period setting featuring Indy over Avatarland any day.

They've only just announced their first Marvel attraction. They've yet to act on Star Wars. Why would Indiana Jones be special?

Well, Indy is in all the parks, it was the first Lucasfilm attraction in WDW (and the longest running live show in Disney Parks history, if I'm not mistaken). Plus, Iger was the ABC executive who was involved with The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, so it might be something of a sentimental move on his part.
