How's The Brown Derby?

Now Is The Time

Planning to eat at the Brown Derby for the first time later this year. Never have eaten there because it's so expensive but this time we're planning on using two credits on the dining plan. Is it worth the money? Are there certain dishes/entrees that stand out?

I liked it. It was not on par with other signature dinning places such as California Grill or Jiko's and IMHO it would not be worth 2 TS meal credits. It is also not a place that I would bring kids to.

This is the menu for there. http://forums.wdwmagic.com/showthread.php?t=54931

For me, it is nothing to write home about. I have had the pork chops and the duck. Both were very good, but I just can't justify spending the 2 credits or the extra money there again. I think it really comes down to what kind of food you like. If you are into foo foo food, then you won't be off put.

I loved it. It was worth the 2 credits for us in that it was a nicer place to eat inside the park. We had already planned to eat at two resorts and didn't want to have to leave the park the day that we first ate there. We were pleased with it.
We took our kids and they loved it as well. They are older though and not the typical picky eaters.

We enjoy it a lot.
It's much nicer if you get into one of the smaller side rooms instead of the main seating area (more intimate). But overall a nice experience. Fairly quiet and the menu is far removed from anything else in Studios.
It is pricey, but a nice meal.

As others have suggested, if I put it on scale, I do prefer California Grill, Artist Point, Jiko and Narcoossee's.

Unfortunately one of the best items on the menu got cut :( The Filet was replaced with a New York Strip.

Evil Dining Plans fault!

I also have to agree that out of all the 2 TS credit restaurants out there, Brown Derby is at the bottom of my list. Narcoossee's and California Grill are much better options.

Oh say it isn't so !

Do they at least still have the mussels appitizer ?

I wouldn't call the Derby "froo-froo". It is more upscale than your average chain place, but its not like some asian-german concept place. It is all pretty much "normal" food.

To me it is worth the cash price (I don't do the dining plan). However to put it sort of in perspective, I don't think it is worth TWICE the price of any other sit down place. I guess when you are using two credits, you are in effect doubling the price.

I also had no problem taking my kids in there - I think they were 5 and 8 the first time they went. They do have a kids menu, and if your kids can behave at a table, then there is no problem. In fact, part of the appeal of the original Brown Derby was they used to have a house phone they would bring to your table. In the era before cell phones, and even cordless ones, Hollywood movers and shakers would eat there. It was a sign of your status to have a waiter bring the corded phone to your table on a silver tray. Where am I going with this you may ask? Well, at WDW, if you ask, the waiter will bring the house phone to your kids on a silver tray, and they get a call from Goofy.

I think only on the lunch menu, I'm sure you could ask for it for dinner.

Here is the menu with it removed http://forums.wdwmagic.com/showthread.php?t=54931

Where are you seeing the menu with it on?

Thanks Steve :)

I must have scrolled to the bottom of that post below the recipes, either that or I got it mixed up with the menus on Allears. It hasn't been updated yet apparently.
Wishing now I would not have used those 2 credits for later this month. Oh well! Guess I will go with the Tuna.

I like the Brown Derby, if I'm wanting an upscale and relaxed meal and I'm stuck at the Studios. I don't think it is worth two Table Service credits, especially at lunch. For the same two TS credits you can get a truly outstanding meal at one of the resorts.

If you're curious, drop in for coffee and dessert. I highly recommend both the grapefruit cake and the flourless chocolate cake.
