Fire at Universal Studios Hollywood

Just saw this news update.

Is this the first time a fire has completely destroyed a major theme park attraction?? (I'm sure smaller carnival rides and roller coasters have been burned down. But at a major theme park???)

It will be interesting to see if they rebuild, or use this as an opportunity to update.

Unlike Universal Orlando, USH is home to true Hollywood history. It's sad that icons like the "Back to the Future" set have been ruined.
-------------------------------------

A fire at Universal Studios has destroyed a set from "Back to the Future," the King Kong exhibit and a video vault containing more than 40,000 videos and reels.

Los Angeles County fire Captain Frank Reynoso says the blaze broke out just before dawn Sunday on a backlot stage at the 400-acre property. The fire has been contained.

Officials say the iconic courthouse square from "Back to the Future," has been destroyed, and the famous clocktower that enabled star Michael J. Fox's character to time travel has been damaged.

NBC Universal President and Chief Operating Officer Ron Meyer says 40,000 to 50,000 videos and reels were damaged in the video vault, but there are duplicates in a different location.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. (AP) — A large fire raged on a back lot at Universal Studios on Sunday, devouring several movie sets and the theme park's King Kong attraction, officials said.

The King Kong exhibit is a stop on the studio's tram tour where the giant ape bellows at passengers and artificial banana scent fills the area, studio spokesman Eliot Sekuler said.

Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Daryl Jacobs said at least one building had burned and as many as three blocks of movie facades were destroyed.

Two mock New York and New England streets used for movie making and tourist displays were "a total loss," he said.

Though the fire was contained, it was still raging, Jacobs said.

The blaze broke out just before dawn on a sound stage at the 400-acre property, fire Capt. Frank Reynoso said. There was at least one explosion.

A thick column of smoke rose thousands of feet into the air and for a time helicopters swept in to drop water.

More than 100 firefighters were trying to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby brush, Reynoso said. One firefighter was hospitalized for unspecified injuries.

Sekuler said the theme park would open Sunday, though the studio tour would not go to the King Kong part of the attraction. He said a commercial shoot was going on when the fire broke out. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Universal Studios is located nine miles north of downtown Los Angeles that has thrill rides and a back lot where movies and television shows are filmed.

Some of the more familiar attractions on the back lot are the clock tower from the "Back To The Future" movies and the house featured in "Psycho."

Scenes from several blockbuster films and television shows have been filmed at the studios, including "War of the Worlds," "When Harry met Sally" and "Scrubs."

The loss here may be hard to understand for anyone who hasn't been to Universal Studios Hollywood, as that property is set up very differently than the Orlando theme park clone.

The King Kong part of the hour long tram tour was my least favorite part of the tour. It's a little sad, but no big loss for theme park visitors. I think whatever was lost in the video and film vault, where the fire appeared to have started, is going to be the much bigger deal for the film industry. Let's hope Universal wasn't storing the company treasures in that vault.

Micechat has a breaking update on the front page with some great maps and photos of what was lost and heavily damaged. http://micechat.com/

Wow, this is shocking. Hopefully they'll rebuild-obviously not the same sets but hopefully sets with similar purposes and looks etc.

On a side note, I don't see how the clock tower from BTF could have been damaged since it was remodeled into the set for Ghost Whisperer. The last time I was there was 2005. Is it possible they changed it back?.

Regardless this is not happy news and I hope the cause is found soon and that nothing more is destroyed.

the clock tower is the same as it was in ghost whisper... but they kept everything for the BTTF version behind if...

ironically isn't this the 2nd time its been burned now... in mid 90s it went up in flames and had to be replaced along with a chunk of new york if I remember. Movie sets are not made to last, but can be replaced and fixed rather quickly.

So no more King Kong????? Will it ever be repaired? Can we expect to see it reopen by July 7 or 8th(since that's when I'm heading there)?

This sounds like a pretty major fire, destroying or at the least damaging several sets and 40,000 videos and reels. Right now, I doubt getting King Kong back together in time for YOUR trip is a high priority. You realize you're talking about a MONTH away, right? These attractions were probably something that took years and lots of money to build, not to mention the videos and reels that are probably irreplaceable. Take some time to consider all the people involved, the firefighters, workers who may be out of a job as a result. This is the exact sort of posts I hate to see after something like this happens, "but what about ME?"

I would like to add that I'm glad that so far it sounds like no was was injured or killed as a result of a fire. Something like this happening is always a shame but unfortunately something that can happen. My heart goes out to the workers, the people who will be cleaning this up and the company in general for their loss.

Again!
(Didn't the original burn in the 90s?)

Actually, I was just researching this on Friday (which makes the events of today even more creepy) but there were 2 fires at Universal on which the clock tower was damaged each time but never destroyed. The fire destroyed all of the facades around it but never completely destroyed the tower....until today.

Is it impossible for people to respond to another poster without rudeness? Obviously to us who have been following the story closely that King Kong has been compeletly destroyed but maybe Starwood hasn't followed it. He/she were just asking a question.

Incidentally, according to CNN and the likes regarding the tape vaults. Nothing irreplaceable has been detroyed. The video vaults were full of duplicates. All of the original film negatives are stored in another building.

I just read somewhere that the clock tower had been moved, so was NOT destroyed.

You are correct. It had been changed for the series Ghost Whisperers. The building/facade was destroyed today but not the actual clock tower. Assuming of course that when they took the clock down, they just didn't thow it out.

Is it possible for someone to respond to news of something like a fire without asking questions about how it will impact their trip? I said the reels were *probably* irreplaceable. They were just asking a question, just an irrelevant question at a time when much larger possibilities were at stake other than them being able to see King Kong on THEIR trip, which was a MONTH away. I get so tired of people going "Oh no, but Pirates can't go under rehab in June because that's when I'MMMMMM going." However this is worse, because the studios have suffered a greater loss, so all I ask is someone keep their thoughts about their trip to themselves rather than whine about it on here.

While we're attacking people, why is it impossible for people to use spell check in this day in age? I see TWO words underlined in red by my auto check. Before you insult me, take the time to do a quick spell check.
